2 Parter...

1)
Part of me has been somewhat concerned that Lids will be a target of GWS, as he comes out of contract at the end of 2012, in the second year of their uncontracted recruiting window.

With (alleged) big dollars to Ward, HUGE dollars to Scully, and surely a reasonable amount to Davis, Palmer, and whoever else comes along, given Lids is pretty much an elite player these days (i'd certainly take him ahead of Ward and at this stage Scully), is he simply out of their price range?

2)
Who do you think realistically GWS will be going after amongst our guys, if any? We're one of the few teams that I basically haven't heard anything about in terms of GWS targeting players.

Thoughts?

Dont forget the cornes bros going to gws as well, Lids will be a tiger for life...I hope gulp.

I hope cameron spebds as much time trying to make sure he stays as he spends on offering three year contracts to spuds like farmer and hislop.

Cotchin, Martin, Riewoldt and now Rance are all signed up past the cut off date so the only genuinly good targets at the moment are Deledio and Vickery.

Hopefully GWS go winless and the Tigers start to emerge as a finals side to make the decision easy.

Seen as this is mostly speculation, I have a feeling that Post has been spoken to. I have nothing to hang my hat on that would add any credibilty but I have my reasons.
Possibility. Foley is also out of contract next year.

I dont think they will target anyone over 25 that is not an out and out star. Foley wouldnt be on there radar I dont think.

I am supremely confident in that GWS wont get any player that we would miss.

Next year is going to be a tough year for GWS and will make it a tough sell by this time next year. I actually see them having the type of losses next year where the media will be questioning the project. Whether that remains the case, the fact is I dont think they will be able to sell the move by this time next year.

A bloke like Deledio being a top player in a Richmond revival will be a walk up start to coaching or media. Which ever way he wants to go, where he can keep his playing salary long after he retires.

Word is Nahas is there target. Which makes sense from a marketing stand point. I've heard we can't even come close to what he is being offered but he is really umming and ahhing about it.

Would never hold it against him if he left. I a lot of ways it would be great. We could conceivably get an end of rd 1 selection if the contract is big enough and keeps guys like lids out of reach.

Front load lids' new contract while we're not paying the full cap, he's still our best player and deserves every cent we can afford him in this climate.

It's my understanding that GWS can only poach 1 player from each club over the 2 year period. Therefore if they were to poach a Post/Nahas type player then Lids would be off limits...this may be our best outcome.

Lids would not spend 6 years at the bottom only to start that process again just as things are looking okay. Seems very content at Tigerland from all the videos etc. Is probably our highest paid player. Tiger for life.

Apparently we are struggling to pay the minimum cap payments that we have to make and we had to front end contracts to get there. If that is the case then we can match offers made to Nahas but the question is would we bother to.

I dont think we would get a round 1 selection, when you see what someone like Bock only fetched adelaide. Nahas is still far from as well regarded as Bock in the footy world and this i believe we wouldnt get fair compo

Yep, reconfigure his contract which would proberbly be backended for next year anyway and give him a huge pay increase next year and front end the hell out of it, im talking 1,000,000 next year, then diminish after that yearly.

tigers are a loyal team. they may throw money, but we are on the rise and a much more powerful club then what GWS will ever be. the players would be going backwards if they choose to leave. Deledio will never leave, mark my words. he bleeds yellow and black and is looked up to by the younger players at the club. they have already spoke amongst themselves that they have to stick together to build a strong side. if anyone would leave then they are not Richmond worthy!

I think it is safe to say Nahas is a required player and from his improvement this year we should do everything in our power to keep him. GWS's strategy seems to be to go young this year and hit the big guns next year. Maybe we should renew Hislop to the end of 2012 just to make it a harder decision on which Tigers players they have a crack at next year.

Hislop - Deledio , Hislop - Deledio

Hopefully they choose Hislop.

They want Nahas and if that fails they will throw the kitchen sink at Deledio.

It is really up to how we go from here IMO. If we go backwards next year we may have something to worry about.

I think Farmer wil be in the window too:D

He won't go, he is a Victorian boy from the country. He won't move to some western suburbian town in New South Wales for money. From everything I can tell by body language and other relating factors he is certain to stay a Tiger for life!

Sorry I should have been more specific, matching the offer throws our entire pay grade out of whack. We are unwilling to pay the extra wage. Also we are paying min salary cap to keep cost down. Part of the FTF fund was to front end contracts and take us up to paying 100% of the salary cap. I can't find the link but I'm pretty sure that's what it said was after punt road resurfacing and stand alone VFL team

As for compo it will depend on Robbies wage at GWS, I'd imagine it would be min 600k possibly more if sheedy really wants to cash in on his Lebanese heritage. The AFL has shot themselves in the foot by saying scully's worth band 1. With Nahas age, B&F top 5 this year plus if we are lucky a big wage end of round 1 is certainly a chance.

They cant pay everyone overs..... if they score scully then they have just about locked in close to the salary cap. If they want to keep these players and their quality kids then they cant go stupid with front ended contracts..... In 5 years time they will have a mass Exodus. Lids is definitely in the right age bracket if they sign him with a front ended contract..... but in 5 years(aged 30) he would be on the chopping board with younger players like scully etc... getting ready for another long term contract. They simply wouldn't be able to offer lids much past the contract that he would sign now. Potentially he would be able to earn allot more staying put in my opinion playing well into his 30's if injuries aren't an issue.

So his choice is to prolong his career with us or grab the cash while he can.... he is also coming up for free agency so he will be able to milk a fair bit out us considering or lack of quality players in his age bracket.

A taste of finals next season will play on his mind too I reckon.....

A couple of important factors that are in contrast to other targets that are unique to Lids...

delids would be currently being paid in order of 700-800k with an increase likely with higher TPP from 2013

secondly and importantly...delids has played through a fairly barren period, he has been very well paid through that time...No probs there however the lure of finals would i think be a fair determinant where he goes next. To that end i dont believe GWS would whet the appetite...why would he wish to endure worse than he has seen in his time at RFC. if we were in any danger it would be as a result of free agency...and they would need to have plenty of space to accomodate him which would be rare for a leading club
