Chris Bond must have done an interview on 5aa a couple of hours ago. Twitter quote:

CHRIS BOND: Harley Bennell has a tweak of the calf. Once he gets back into good mental & physical condition he'll be back with the squad. He needs to get in the right frame of mind.

Call me paranoid but this whole situation sounds a lot like gentle massaging into the now seemingly inevitable headline of...

CHRIS BOND: 'Harley Bennell retires due to calf injuries and totally not partying related problems.'

Yeah well Dusty was pretty close to getting the arse, and unlike Bennell had a reputation in his youth as being a crap trainer.
But if you don't think there is a cultural difference between being an aboriginal with a drug problem playing for the lesser supported team in a two team town, and playing for Richmond, I can't help you.
Wtf has being indigenous got to do with it ? Do you think he is treated poorly because he is indigenous ??

Absolutely. Do you think Bennell would be quite the marked man he is if he was a white guy playing in Melbourne? Probably the worst place to be if you are an indigenous player in a dalliance with substances and misbehaviour is living in Perth as a docker player.

Please don't tell me that you think this excuses his behaviour?

I think it fills in the space around the behaviour.

I've said it before but you really don't want to know what football players get up to in their own time.

Just one example is a player of ours injured his calf in Brisbane on the Saturday lunchtime game (our time) and was offering to buy me a drink at the casino, full of booze to his eyeballs by that night. That's a soft example but if all of those circumstances from all players are splashed on the newspaper sunday morning it hides those who currently monopolize the coverage.

Just because we only hear about a little, then hear a lot doesn't mean the prevalence has increased

Nope, I'm just saying from now on he has to realise he is going to be held to a higher standard than anyone and, as I said in my posts above, live the life of a monk. He probably thinks that's unfair, and to a small extent I'm sympathetic to that, but that is the reality. He's walking around with a target on his back

Just two questions - you should feel the need to answer only one:)

What Freo 'era' are we talking about here?

Did you help him rehab his calf?

Sorry to go off topic, but thought it fits in with the last few comments.

Can't remember the exact teams, but remember Buddy being a late withdraw against GC a few years ago. The reason? He went out and partied, woke up in Sydney, supposedly hitting the white powder pretty hard.

He wasn't in the squad when Ross Lyon took over. He was waaay too old for me at that time and I wasn't impressed by his professionalism.

It was such a badly kept secret that the AFL players had all benched him from their dream teams before lockout.

Yes! Black, White or Brindle, no player gets away with being a dickhead these days. Go out and do the s**t kids do, just remember who you are and that people will do stupid things to bring you down!

I will back Harley in (as i do with 98% of people) until the end, and I'm not just talking about football. The day will come when it clicks inside his head, as it does for everyone, I just hope he isnt in a gutter with nowhere to go when it does!

Bennel has drawn a target on himself. He don't need excuses. Excuses will keep him stuck & he won't grow. But if you think he has been treated undeservedly we could ask his teammates what they think? From all appearances they have had enough of him as well. And omg. A lot of his teammates are indigenous. This is Harleys last chance. We can only hope this is the bottom for him. For his sake & the Dockers. But excuses won't get him anywhere anytime soon.

Can't agree with that. Bennell has had more off field incidents while in WA than he has played games of AFL so ofcourse there's going to be scrutiny.

People love drama, that's why reality TV is so popular.

If someone saw Darren Glass or Peter Bell at the casino at 1am they'd think little of it. But if people saw Ben Cousins or Harley Bennell at the casino at 1am they'd pull their phone out and start recording in the anticipation of shenanigans.

Name one player that was a top 10 pick that wouldn't get front page headlines if there were photos of him snorting coke.

There's scrutiny because he has 2 things. Talent and (poor) form.

Thought Harley was a bit stiff to miss out on the extended leadership group. Our party boys seem under represented and he would be the leader of that group.

Cmon Harley!

Signs are that he won't play JLT2. Hopefully we'll see him in the Peel pre-season games starting next weekend though.
