How do you fix Melbourne?

Neeld seems to have lost the players from day one.

We keep hearing about how unfit they all were when Neeld took over, yet those same unfit players managed to win 8 games the year before he got there. And now Needles has won 4 in 24.

Agreed. That was the day that it became clear (to me anyway) that there was a deeper problem at Melbourne that just not being good enough. Specifically the absence of leadership in the playing group. Two of the 'leaders' that day in Moloney and Green were worse than shithouse. Green then played two more poor games, before 'firing' vs Gold Coast

Imo Melbourne had an issue with a number of senior players, and probably still do (Sylvia, Jamar). This will take a long time to fix, and most likely longer than Neeld has. But they may as well stick with Neeld for the rest of the year, because the playing group will not be fixed and so they would be ruining another coach's prospects of coaching. But they need to stick with their plan, and focus on the development of the likes of Grimes, Trengove, Blease, Watts, Viney, Toumpas, Hogan, McDonald and Bail.

They were hopeless for one game. A couple of weeks before that they were in the 8. Even including that humiliation they won 8 games and had a % of 85% to finish level with Richmond in 2011. 12 months later they win 4 games with a % of 67%. Thats a pretty big fall in 12 months. They were pathetic last year...not just for one week but for pretty much the whole season. They got smashed in possessions, clearances, inside 50s....you name it in almost every game.

Now they have dropped away even further and are being compared to Fitzroy. Neeld has failed to get the players playing with any sort of intensity and effort at all.

I surprised this thread still open since it appears you can only say nice things about clubs on the MB.

To fix Melbourne you need a completed board /admin/development rebuild. So in that respect it would probably require the AFL to step in, but with their focus on GWS I wonder if the AFL will do that.

My opnion only no need for the mods to delete it if it upsets any Melbourne posters

Have a look at what Fremantle did in 2007\2008. New development coaches, and new recruitment staff. The issue at Melbourne is not the coach, it is the recruitment and development of players.

Did not trade for players and picked up a number of 20-25 year old players from second tier competitions. This build depth and make people fight for spots.

Once you have done this for 4-5 years then you can go after an experienced coach, as you have a list to entice him to the club.

Sounds promising, as we performed a huge overhaul of our development and recruitment areas at the time we signed Neeld. Might just be a matter of showing some patience and having faith in the people we put in place.

Misson and Carig made the honest assessment that we were the least fit team they've ever seen at AFL level. A good fitness base can take multiple years to build. And its probably no coincidence that the guys who seem to do the most for us are also our fittest players (Jones - former triathlete and fitness freak, Viney - been training hard since he was a kid, Clark - had multiple pre-seasons at a better club fitness wise)
