Hey all,

being in my early 20's i have little recollection of the great Robbie Flower other than a faint memory of him single-handedly bringing us back from the dead against the doggies to make the finals.

How good was he? is there some sort of equivalent to a player that is playing these days?

Was he a genuine superstar of the competition back then like your Hird,Voss & Buckleys?

Anyone got any stories about great games he played or great goals?

He is the reason i go for Melbourne.

To me he was like a James Hird, unflappable and fair with skill to burn and a terrific heart.

He is generally regarded as Melbourne's second best player of all time, after the great Ron Barassi of course. So that itself is a huge honour. Like you, I was unfortunate to not really have seen him play, but from what I havd read and heard, he was a superstar.

Too young to ever see him, but I heard that everytime he got the ball everyone else went in slow motion...That's schweet! Pity they gave such an important and significant number to the club to Armstrong

A bright light that shone through some pretty bleak seasons. Those of us who saw him play over his career recognise the brilliance of his play. Dazzeling runs down the wing for inspirational goals. For years was probably our best mark. Towelled up Doug Hawkins regularly. Frustrated Dipper so much that he spent a lot of time chasing Flower around the ground just trying to belt him. At one stage when we were really ********, our kick out strategy was to get Robbie one out with his opponent on the wing and kick it to this contest. Robbie would get the ball more times than not. If he couldn't mark it, he could get it when it hit the ground, so great was his balance, poise and ground skills.

Got cleaned up often but never whinged and always played for the team.

Look up the term "silky skills" in the dictionary and you'll find there a picture of Robbie Flower.

Probably better off asking on a different board and getting an objective opinion on it.
