HECS was already in when I started uni, the uni fight was about voluntary vs compulsory student unionism (marchers wanted compulsory which was the status quo) but they would also keep wanting to wind back HECS as well
the only politician I know of that I went to uni with (acquantaince level - she didn't march AFAIK) was Kelly O'dwyer

were the stories true that she had some rather extreme views back then (which got smoothed over when she stood up for preselection)

not at uni (at least not during my interactions when she was running for student uni liberals) , she was pro voluntary student unionism (ie supporting what Kennett was trying to - and succeeded - in bringing in) but otherwise recognised the inherent "geekiness" of being someone in student politics (copping the vast majority of students who did not care and told you to fork off when you tried to get them to vote)

But yeah let's lock up the whole state. Shepparton is 2 and a half hours drive from Geelong, 5 hours from Warrnambool, 6 hours from Lakes Entrance, 9 hours to Mildura.

The fleeting beast is faster than Superman and The Flash combined. It will get you!!

This is a train wreck, they have zero information on hand.

GOLD STANDARD

ive mentioned this before, but the story that sums up uni student politics for me was the split in the liberals at monash.

the original club as a split over some stupid issue, one being the liberal club, the other the young liberals

one of them has an election, and some rich flog went for the lock by paying people $50 each to guarantee a vote for him. So the club numbers swelled, the opponent had **** all vote for him on the day, but there was a problem. The rich flog paid up front, and most of these people didnt give two shits about liberals - let alone student liberals. So they all no showed. Rich flog got beat in a case study on how to **** up branch stacking

Elimination strategy FTW. We so f’ed up in 2020.
Yep, gee we wasted a tremendous amount of time and money on nothing last year. And all the people's lives and businesses that have been ruined needlessly. What a failure, and we're sticking to the same strategy. All developed nations have moved well beyond us. Turns out that, actually, shutting everything down, closing your eyes and putting your fingers in your ears, and praying the pandemic goes away, isn't the highly effective, forward-thinking strategy we were lead to believe. Other leaders around the world took a moment to think about how to keep their societies going long term despite the virus, even if it meant some short-term pain, and now they're coming out of it.

Here in Australia, we're still running around like headless chooks. No plan. No idea what we're really doing. Seems the only plan any of them can come up with is 'lock it all down', and while we were huddled at home no one in government bothered to contemplate what could be done beyond that. This buying time measure bought them time to do what exactly?

NC still operating under a veil of secrecy as well. And we wonder why fringe members of society cling to FB and YouTube for (dis) information and protest.

Pretty easy to say we have ****ed up with hindsight though. If everything really went to shit OS compared to what actually happened...if ppl were dropping dead in the streets etc. we would be saying thank god we were able to eliminate it at that time. Yeah we are behind and it is a bad problem but there was many unknowns at the time.

That's one way of looking at things, but then you'd need to ignore the fact that the likes of the UK are only just opening up after extended and fierce lockdowns, as well as ignoring the extended period of 'blue sky' that we had.

I get quite sick of some looking towards basketcases with envy!

Elimination was never possible. There were plenty of other options available, but people wouldn't accept deaths. It's a shitshow.
