As jobs and industry get more sophisticated, the kind of people in high-ranking military positions are hardly going to be all willing to move to Townsville. Nor would that be where any of the support staff are.it is amazing how both parties federally talk about decentralisation but for every job moved to Armidale far more are moved to Canberra without the media or politicians commenting. Have a look at Defences publically issued annual reports since Payne directed more consideration of staff outside Canberra- every state and territory now has less Defence staff in it except for Canberra where hundreds of positions have been moved to or created in costing tens of millions in high lease costs, drawing on a smaller potential workforce and even more out of touch with actual outcomes.

Centralisation is happening in every part of the world. Urbanisation has accelerated in the last 300 years.
It's like pee-ing into the tide to try to force people to move to regional towns with little infrastructure, poor educational facilities and a tiny employment pool for more and more specialised work.
There are some things Govts could do to make it easier. (i.e. remove stamp duty, improve regional health and education) but at the moment they're doing the opposite of that. This Federal Govt improves shooting clubs while regional TAFE and Unis are closing their doors. There are stuff all regional nurses/doctors because how many regional tertiary institutions teach medicine/nursing?
