Player Watch Hugh Bond - Pick 50, 2022 AFL Draft

Might be a candidate for a rookie pick demotion, alongside Hamill if we're looking for a contracted player.

Though, we may also just say * it and take the minimum this year - this does not seem like a good draft class at this point, as much as it will likely be one that ages well.

Any chance we can start using the rookie list for 'players with potential' like we used to, rather than this half-way house it now is? If we have looked at a player and seen that they are unlikely to play AFL, then delist them. Don't half-arse it.
We have such a good record with finding players through the rookie draft - and none of them were on the list then delisted and rookied.

Trading back in was just a function of us taking Michalanney. We had to trade out so we could use later picks to match the bid, and we always intended to trade back in as soon as we could after matching it.
At time didn’t see much point taking another player unless it was a developing ruck like Verrall

Re the rookie list … would be interesting to see if Rory Laird came thru the U18 pathways now what number of draft or rookie list he would go

Yeah, we'll probably do that next year. At the moment it's just a way to demote someone who is contracted and allow the usage a more important pick. And we've probably been a bit too generous with who we've offered contracts too, but that may just be an artifact of this year being the first one where you could genuinely say we have a handle on our prospect pool and who we care about.

At the moment, we've seemed more content to rely on SPP picks for those kind of gambles.

We had another spot on our list. It was either trade back in to pick 50, or else use a pick at the end of the draft. Not much difference in the end, there were only around ten more picks after Bond anyway.

We delisted Jason Porplyzia from the Rookie list then redrafted him a couple of years later.

Porps was from memory. Delisted, rookied and elevated. I could be wrong though.

Turned out a very handy player too.

Edit: oops Rags beat me to it

LOL

after one year still on his rookie contract...zero chance that happens after having a restricted pre-season then missing a stretch of 7 games with injury. Maybe with the likely delisting of Hately, Brown and Schoenberg missing for a good part of 2024 Hugh might actually get to play his preferred role as an in and under aggressive midfielder.
What was his ball winning ability like in junior football? Was he racking up decent numbers?

Not bad numbers in a comp where they play 25 minutes no time on...also the Rebels weren't an overly strong team in his draft year and bear in mind at the Nationals he played as a lock down defender on the oppo's most dangerous small forwards.

Thanks.

Hopefully he has a strong preseason and we get to see a bit more of what he can do.

Playing midfield he was the GWV Rebels No.1 mid and won plenty of ball and laid some of the most bone crunching tackles ever seen at the level. Why he hasn't been given a run in the midfield during the SANFL finals when Hately, Brown and co weren't getting it done mystifies me.

Just read Rookie Me Central's bio above should answer you're questions.
Agree with this. Delisting these guys will be great for Bond and Dowlings development as midfielders in '24.

Loved the Sturt player trying to take him out off the ball and coming off second best. Bond rattles him with the hit. A genuine tough nut.

Wow some people on the board don't give any of the kids time.

I thought he got a small run in the sanfl midfield early in the year and performed well.

Hes not had a great year but did show something was there earlier when he finally got on the park.

Pick in the 40s are normally project players.

I understand due to list sizes, we need to be ruthless, but I bet we see something from him next season.
