SHEAHAN’S MAIL ON NORTH CEO AND RICHARDSON’S NEXT COACHING JOB
BY SEN

Veteran AFL journalist Mike Sheahan has tipped Mark Brayshaw to replace Carl Dilena as North Melbourne CEO.

Dilena, 52, has held the role since 2012 but Sheahan believes Brayshaw, a former player and board member at the Kangaroos, is being considered for the position.

Mark is the brother of former North president James Brayshaw and was Richmond’s chief executive officer between 2000-2004.

“Mark Brayshaw is head of the AFL Coaches Association right now,” Sheahan said on SEN Breakfast.

“There’s consistent speculation around Carl Dilena, the CEO of North Melbourne, leaving and growing speculation that he will be replaced by Mark Brayshaw, who’s a former board member at North Melbourne and a former player."

Sheahan is also of the opinion that former St Kilda coach Alan Richardson will join North Melbourne as an assistant to work under new senior coach Rhyce Shaw.

“Rhyce Shaw and Richo have come from the same club (Collingwood) and one of Rhyce’s assistants is Gavin Brown, who was a teammate of Richo's,” he said.

"It just fits, and Rhyce has said he needs a mentor.”

It does feel like the pendulum swinging. I was ok with the aim to rebrand the club as "elite" and " high performance" and all that. But now that's been done - and I think Richmond's success has helped too - we are rediscovering the value of what makes our club different and special, and bringing back/in people who get that.

I'm a bit triggered by Brayshaw's history around 2007, but times are a lot different now.

And Richardson would be a good get.

North Melbourne and Melbourne are frontrunners in the race to secure former St Kilda coach Alan Richardson.

Both clubs are in the process of making key changes to their coaching staffs for next season and have set their sights on landing Richardson for next season.

Kangaroos’ coaching director and midfield coach Darren Crocker is expected to be offered a new role within the football department as part of the refresh for next season.

Richardson is an important target for the Kangaroos as the club looks to add some senior experience around new coach Rhyce Shaw.

Alan Richardson could join North Melbourne or Melbourne in a senior off-field role.

He could play a mentoring role and help oversee the Roos coaching and development programs.

The former St Kilda coach recently said he still has a strong passion for football but was taking time to work out his next step back into club land.

“I sense for me it’s time to perhaps be involved in supporting a coach,” Richardson said.
“I’ve certainly had some conversations, which has been flattering.

“I’m quite excited, potentially, about some opportunities, but those conversations are ongoing.

“That’s the sort of role that I think I’m suited to given my experiences. There’s still a fair bit to play out there but potentially it’s something like that.”

St Kilda back line coach Henry Playfair, who is contracted to the Saints for one more season, has also been linked to the Roos.

Leigh Tudor, who remains contracted to North for one more season, will also have talks with Shaw about his role for next season.

The Demons have parted ways with assistants Craig Jennings and Brendan McCartney and have also approached former Carlton senior coach Brendon Bolton.

Jennings has left the Demons to coach at lower level, including a potential VFL coaching role.

North Melbourne is set to continue its coaching makeover with head of player development Aaron Greaves stepping away from the club.

Greaves, 41, is highly regarded for his coaching and player learning programs and has played a key role in helping North’s young players including Tarryn Thomas, Nick Larkey, Cameron Zurhaar and Bailey Scott blossom this year.

The former school teacher specialises in identifying player learning strengths and effective communication strategies, in partnership with top sporting clubs from around the world.

However, Greaves is sure to be in demand as he explores other opportunities including a potential head of football role, which he previously held at Port Adelaide.

Greaves worked closely alongside senior coach Ken Hinkley and senior assistant Michael Voss during a five-year stint at the Power.

The Kangaroos appointed highly-rated West Coast list manager Brady Rawlings as its new general manager of football last month, to help partner new coach Rhyce Shaw.

Rawlings replaces former list manager and football operations manager Cameron Joyce, who will leave the club at season’s end.

Greaves was contracted for next season at Arden St, but has agreed to part ways on good terms after recent talks with the club.

The St Joseph’s product oversaw North’s off-field and welfare programs and combined them with his coaching and game day role from the interchange bench.

North is making major off-field changes after letting go senior coach Brad Scott in May.

Shaw’s young Roos have defied expectations since then to sit only two games outside the eight.

While the club’s list was talked down over the first three months of the season, there has been significant improvement from some of the club’s brightest young players including Jy Simpkin, Zurhaar, Larkey and Thomas over the second half of the 2019 campaign.

Forwards coach Leigh Tudor is also contracted for next season but will have discussions about his future with Shaw before the end of the season.

Tudor was considered a senior coach in the making after successful stints at Geelong, St Kilda and Sydney, but was overlooked for the interim coaching role in favour of Shaw.

Tudor led the Cats’ VFL team to a flag and was at the Swans with Shaw when they won the 2012 premiership.

The former Geelong and North Melbourne forward continues to be highly rated in the industry and could be targeted at season’s end for a senior position elsewhere.

Long-time assistant coach Darren Crocker is out of contract at season’s end at North.

Not sure where he is "highly regarded" but it aint at North, I mean I'm sure he is somewhere. Another Brad Scott choice is gone. Anyone needing a picture painted or maybe a sketch?

Life is going to be mighty fine. Just you wait and see.

Hmmm, I wouldn't be surprised if Alan's lack of success ( Saints) has some at the club questioning whether he is the right fit.
