Is GWS's premiership window about to close?

As it stands, i don't see premiership in them anytime soon
That said, they have a unique position in that they can start a rebuild with what they have

Aleer ? ?
Hamilton Taylor Cumming
Idun Kelly Ash
Bruhn Brander Stone
Riccardi Hogan Greene (C)
Preuss Taranto Green (VC)
Callaghan Flynn ? ?

Take out the likes of Whitfield, Cogs, Ward & Davis (even Hill who i'd have traded last year) and there is still a lot of talent on the list

Hird taking the Giants to the promised land, with Sheedy right next to him handling the media, would be the dream PR move right now.

All the talk about his 'redemption' and how 'without 18 teams he never would have had this chance' etc etc

Agree

Good building blocks are ok

Remember how we used to talk not just about if GWS/Gold Coast would win a flag in the next couple of years, but rather how many flags they'd win?

Agree he has to go. Even blokes like Riccardi showed talent early and Leon has managed to coach all the talent out of his players. They all play without any joy or flare. Depressing to watch. Almost painful to watch.

It won't actually cost them anything to let him go $$$ wise

6 month payout but just let McVeigh coach until the end of the year.

Gives them a full six months to appoint a new coach.

Has to be done. They could contend again with this group.

There you go.

They must read bigfooty

I'd go with:

FB: Idun Buckley Cumming
HB: Haynes Taylor Whitfield
C: Perryman Green Callaghan
HF: ??? ?Hogan ??Daniels
FF: Greene Himmelberg ????
Foll: Flynn Hopper Kelly
Int: Taranto, Ash, Bruhn, ??Lloyd

Question marks: Coniglio, Davis, Ward, Preuss, Riccardi, Brander, O'Halloran, Aleer, Stone, Hamilton, Kennedy etc.

I like Buckley as a solid second tall defender, he was playing well before injury. And the backline is well stocked, they just don't get any up field help or play a working system.

To me they need a more mobile second ruck rather than the Flynn/Preuss combo, and then they need at least 2, if not 3 pressure forward players. Daniels is ok, but doesn't kick goals. Lloyd has a crack as an option and can do wing minutes, but otherwise they are bereft of options. Brunh and Taranto both offer a bit of forward craft as resting mids. Coniglio's having a go in that role, but it's a specialist position.

Assuming Bobby Hill goes at the end of this year I'd be going out and signing 4 specialist defensive forwards from the draft, state leagues or rival teams. Even if they're not very good, I'd bring them in on short term deals to signify that the current list just has a huge hole. Mitch Crowden from Freo, Toby Bedford from Melbourne, Jake Aarts from Richmond, Ben Ronke from Sydney maybe, I'd have a big list of the options and be sure that at least 2 of them are immediately ready to play.

Reckon stone will be a player.
Riccardi too with the right coach

I like Stone but from what I've seen he's probably a wingman or rotational mid rather than the pressure forward they need. I haven't seen enough of Riccardi to really be sure either way but he doesn't give them the second ruck or physical presence they need. I'd still play him an extended series of games to learn more about him and to stretch teams with decent tall options. If they won't defend they really should try to get teams the other way.

Was it really ever open?
Yes, between 2016 and 2019. Then the clock struck 12 and Cogs turned back into a pumpkin. The departure of Jeremy Cameron firmly slammed their window shut, and until they find a someone to adequately replace him, I don't see them winning a flag.

Making the top 4 and a prelim in 2016 was probably the worst thing that could have happened to them, because they stuck with Leon Cameron as a result. Another year of missing finals could have allowed them to move on, but you can't get rid of someone immediately after they get you from mid-table into the top 4. That bought him another three years. Then in 2019 they made the grand final, which again was the worst thing that could have happened to them. Even if they got smashed, you can't get rid of someone who just brought you to a grand final. And that bought him another three years of underperforming with such a talented list.

I reckon if they're going to contend again in the next few years, they need to find a coach who can get the best out of Cogs. Maybe that's Clarko, maybe it's someone else, but Cogs has too much talent and takes up too much salary cap to play that poorly.

Am betting Giants top 4 next year as much as I liked Leon Cameron they just couldn't consistently score with so many talented players top 4 should happen next year not so sure about a grand final appearance.

Needs another strong marking forward and I like their chances to bounce back next year.

Idun Taylor Stein
Cumming Aleer Haynes
Kelly Green Perryman
Greene Hogan Whitfield
Himmelberg (Key Fwd) Daniels
Pruess Hopper Taranto

Ash Coniglio Callaghan Lloyd
