Don't see it being the same way at all. A bit like Danger... gave everything to the club over 8+ years... Lever on the other hand had been there a minute. I think it's to do with the "I'm so grateful to the Club for taking a chance on me (when no-one else would), and I want to be a one club player", yet first opportunity he gets he pisses off for more money. And look, I'm not really pissed at him for leaving - I get that the offer was too good to refuse. The thing that pisses me off is a) the way he went about it (lying instead of being honest) and b) behaving like a free agent by demanding he go to the Dees. He should not have the same rights as a Free Agent, IMO. In this situation, the Club should be able to trade him back to the State he wants to go, but the Club negotiates with a number of Clubs to get the best outcome for both.
It's not like he wouldn't have been drafted. Moreover, Melbourne have been interested for years - before he was even drafted. Hell, if Jack Trengove hadn't broken his foot in the physical at Punt Road I think he'd have been a Melbourne player already.

So your problem is that a young kid, when put on the spot, said what the crowd wanted to hear?

What do you think the reaction, from both fans and the club, would have been if he'd said "I didn't really want to be drafted outside of Victoria and will be looking for a trade home at the first opportunity"?

Yeah, good point. But they are adults... not really "young kids". They are earning good $$$ playing a sport they love. I would have preferred him to reply to the question of "Are you going to stay?" with "I haven't looked at any offers at this stage. My manager is fielding all options and we'll have a look at what's best for me in the long run". I just don't get the need to lie. And fans don't like being treated like idiots.

How do you know he was lying? He may have genuinely thought he was going to stay at that point in time.

Yeah, ok. fair enough. Maybe he wasn't. Reckon he wasn't lying either when someone said they saw him talking to Melbourne officials and he denied it outright?

I completely agree with all of the above. However: a) Jake didn't make or break the rules that the AFL have created around all of this; and, b) Adelaide got a great deal for him anyway! Do you seriously think that Adelaide would have done better by being able to do the trade with another club?

What do people want him to say to a journo. Of course he wanted to come back to be with his family and mates. And his partner would have wanted to be close to hers. And of course the extra cash was a factor. But his hardly going to mention the cash is he. Do people really expect him not to speak positively about the move. These articles are basically fluff pieces. As the player is hardly going to give up too many zingers. Analysing these articles is a very pointless exercise.

All or most clubs have lost or gained players on similar circumstances. We lost Scott Thompson and Scully. We have gained Jeff White and now Lever. Just as examples.

Adelaide were well compensated as well.

An interesting topic and i felt same way as you jenny61 when ablett left geelong. He and his manager lied that they hadnt decided on ablett going to Gold coast during the 2010 season when speculation was rife. Then later on it was shown that he had committed to Gold Coast all along.

Like you I thought dont lie, but on reflection what is the option? The system doesnt really encourage players coming out mid season announcing they are leaving. In some cases - Phil Davis eg- the club can even treat you as an outcast.

I dont think supporters and clubs could handle the truth

I like how you presume things.

You win some, you lose some. We lost Griffen and Ward, we gained Boyd and Schache. Just the way it works.

Maybe Adelaide should start really going all out and making these massive offers for players from interstate like Neale when he was OOC? Just like Port did with Ryder, Rockliff, Motlop, Polec. They also have great retention.

It’s not a state “homesickness” problem for south Australia. It’s an Adelaide football club problem.
And you also won a flag. Not bad going.

Young in football terms...you're the one who drew the distinction of Dangerfield being different due to having given years of service.

If he'd have answered like that he would have never heard the end of it. Sure, it wouldn't have been on the same level as Dusty's 2017 media frenzy (although maybe within the Adelaide fishbowl it would have been similar), but he would have been asked about it frequently, and people would now be blaming him for causing a distraction for himself and the club.

If fans don't want to be treated like idiots, maybe they should not behave like idiots when players leave. Do you think reactions like this will encourage the next player wanting out to be more open and up front about it?

It was already a distraction. It honestly wouldn't have made an ounce of difference and at least folk would have had time to get used to the idea.

And look, I think with the advent of free agency, people will become used to players moving more regularly. I know there's already a kind of air of resignation (certainly within BF) that Sloane will leave at the end of this year, and not nearly as much angst as there has been in the "will they stay or go" threads in the past. We aren't perfect... just passionate, but we'll get there.

Well I guess that all depends on where you finish this year. ;)

I'm quite happy to believe it because I know it's the truth.
Then Dez you should tell his old man to shut up and stop being so important by mentioning his total pay packet along with ASA's.
while you are at it you should stop him mention that he broker the deal a lot earlier than mentioned.

Spoke to his mum personally.

So what I Have spoken to his dad several times, Also what I find is most tend to forget ASA's when mention salary.

You should really check out who gets there hands on the money available under the Additional Services Agreement at Melbourne,
To help you work it out. " Players can also share $1,022,000 per club under the Additional Services Agreement (ASA) for things such as appearances at corporate sponsor functions."
Now sit back an watch how many times you see Lever on the media, and at Functions for Melb. Or have I mention something best kept in the dark.

Not to mention captain courageous Taylor Walker. Delivered a performance the total opposite of awe inspiring for a leader in the biggest game of the year. Hard to see the players being motivated to play for a guy like that again if that was how he performed on GF day.
Does a sweet power stance though!

Yep. I think if they need to go home (for whatever reason) a request for a trade to the home State can be made, but the originating Club HAS to be able to negotiate the best outcome for both of them. Saying you'll only go to THIS club is pretty much crippling to the original club and, also gives the player Free Agency benefits when they haven't earned them.

That's the best solution IMO - player can request a trade to a state and not a specific club. If all they want to do is go home this shouldn't be a problem
