On the Pies website....we can only hope !!!!

COLLINGWOOD is confident young midfielder Josh Thomas has finally turned the corner in his fight against a foot injury and has predicted a possible return to the VFL in a month.

Thomas, 20, has endured a dismal run with shin, calf and foot problems since coming to the club in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft.

After spending most of the past nine months in a moon boot - and following another bout of surgery a month ago - the Pies are optimistic the worst is behind him.

"We're actually starting to see blue sky for the first time for probably 12 months," coach Nathan Buckley told AFL.com.au this week.

"He's coming back. He's had a wretched 18 months and you couldn't possibly script it any worse for what he's had to cope with.

"We're pretty confident we'll see him back in four to six weeks playing in the VFL and get some solid footy into him and see where we go from there."

Buckley said Thomas arrived at the club having battled a fracture in one foot, before he developed problems with the other last year.

He also suffered shin problems in his early days as a Pie and a calf injury that kept him from the first five rounds of 2010.

Buckley said it initially appeared as though the young Queenslander's career was running close to that of former Magpie Lee Walker.

Walker played just 16 AFL games between 1993 and 1997 with three knee reconstructions and other assorted injuries hampering his career.

"[Walker] was just getting a bit of a start and then dropping off and never really got a good run at it," Buckley said.

"Josh for a time was in that situation.

"We've had a few really strong chats and he's been at the crossroads a couple of times over the last couple of months [but] we think it's resolved now."

Thomas is due to start running on Friday, which Buckley says is an exciting step given the upside of the inside midfielder.

"We're really confident and positive we may have broken through and we'd love to see him wearing a Collingwood guernsey in a month or so," he said.

"When he's up and about, he's an elite clearance player with great hands, uses the ball really well by hand and by foot.

"At his best, we clearly believe he can be an AFL level player so we want to give him that chance."

Re: Thomas turning the corner

Imagine how confusing it would be having Dale and Josh in the same side? even though they're not related it would be hell for the commentators.

Good on him, hope to see him soon :D

Re: Thomas turning the corner

Great to see the club is sticking with him. Sounds like he is a keeper unlike many who have him as a delistee candidate on this board.

Bucks seems to rate him very highly.

I've maintained all along that he is the best youngster we have on our list at the moment from the untried/early bunch.

He has star potential.

Couldn't agree more. Hope the kid has some better luck.
Very talented kid & loves to win his own ball.

How on earth does he seem like a keeper? Nearly 21 for memory and can barely string a few VFL games together. Alex fasolo is the deffinition of a keeper. I think elliot will show his far better than thomas, witts/williams too. And eventually paine

He is still a prime candidate for delistings... just because bucks said his turned a corner with his injury doesnt mean its the case, or that he wont reinjure it / get another injury. The odds are stacked heavily agaisnt this guy, hope he makes it but his body looks like its gonna let him down. Sorry for the negativity :p

They could just call them Dale Thomas and Josh Thomas I guess

Re: Thomas turning the corner

He'll probably turn that corner, slip on the sidewalk and break his foot. I stopped holding my breath for Thomas a while ago, just had too much of a Rusling feel to it and he broke my heart. I DON'T WANT TO BE HURT AGAIN.

I will believe he is on the improve when he is playing in the senio6rs. Until then I have little interest in the man, particularly after he was taken in the 70's in a weak draft after Sinclair's pick. If he is meant to be such a great player, why was he still there on draft day for our lowly pick? Perhaps other clubs knew something about him that we did not, such as he is always injured.

I find it perplexing why someone with little interest about an individual would post in a thread dedicated to that someone....

Why was Swan still available at pick 56? Or Barlow in the pre-season draft of 09? Blair the rookie draft in 08? The reason is that recruiters aren't right all the time and just because a kid was rated at 75 during his draft year doesn't mean he'll be the 75th best player from that draft.

where he was drafted is irrelevant now. those that have actually seen him play rate him as having AFL potential, that's why he still creates discussion when he hasn't actually appeared for a long time. he's up against it now, i don't think he'll make it, but he had a lot going for him when he played, forget his draft number.

I've been hanging out to see J Thomas and Elliot play this year. They are both superstars of the future IMO. Both are good enough to make a big impression this year. Elliot will have a bigger impact then Fasolo in terms of kicking goals and Thomas can cause some carnage with his good mate Beamsy in and under.

I think MMD raises a pretty fair point, we're just speculating on potential and the brief glimpses we've seen of him in the VFL. It isn't outrageous to suggest that he fell that far in the draft for a reason.

The best thing about the article is Buckley saying that he is "an afl level player" and an "elite clearance player with good hands".

If he is an elite clearance player and can string along a good second half of the season for the VFL side, then it is worth keeping him.

at worst at least re-rookiing

I think he raises a point about not going OTT but that's all. He then ruined that when bringing draft position into it. The reason he went so late had nothing to do with injuries because he was never injured at underage level.

He was taken so late because of his size. He's only 5'9 in the old which is extremely undersized for an inside mid. The best in the league are Pendles, Corey, Boyd, Judd and Priddis who are all about 10cm taller. The only one under 6 foot in the past 2 decades to be considered a gun at that size is Kerr.i

Like Blair in the 08 draft had he been 4-5 inches taller he likely would have gone 30-40 spots higher. FWIW only one player has been drafted in the top 20 under 180cm in the past decade which was Prestia....

There's also the fact that he only has one position. He won't get a game in the seniors with us unless it's through the midfield. A lack of versatility can quite easily see a play fall in the draft which no doubt hurt Thomas.

It's a shame Josh hasn't had any luck with injury up to this point.

Such an incredible inside extractor. Mini Luke Ball with his inside ball winning ability and tackling game. Just has a knack for those elements of the game and does it as well as anyone at the club. Has some pace - which hopefully he still has and a good skill set.

I've always rated him a best 22 talent and still do if he can get his body right for an extended period and work up his endurance base. Look forward to his return and hopefully with a month of VFL footy can slot into the midfield alongside Beams and Pendlebury as our ball winners.

The club seems to rate him highly and as i have not seen him play i will take their word word for it.

I think size and the fact he was a queenslander tended to drop his value a bit. A lot of clubs would have not concentrated on him as much thinking he was GC bound. I think if he can get on and stay on the park he could be an important depth player come finals time. I view him and Elliott as our two best youngsters who can make an impact this year. From memory the only other vic club that showed an interest was the Hawks.
