Why do we always kick long and to the right? This is a genuine question, I don’t understand and would like someone who understands these set ups to explain it to me.

We famously have a tall forward line. All our tall forwards can take a mark (altho Tex is an unreliable option at this point). ROB can take a pack mark. Dawson is a really great overhead mark. Worrell is a great mark. Hinge is a good mark. Curtin is 197cm and a great mark.

With so many marking options, don’t we have a (forgive me) Competitive Advantage, that should allow us to set up more than one spot to kick long to?

Like couldn’t we have Curtin and Worrell in the middle, or to the left, and the rest on the right?

I just don’t get it. Please enlighten me.

We seem to like predictability

In terms of our structure, we like knowing where the ball is going.

A dynamic, varied, opportunistic approach to kick offs - chaos ball - is not in our DNA.

It's an example of the whole risk vs reward thing.

I personally think we play better in the Rounds 1-3 style. Instinctive, fast, backing ourselves. Freestyle football. Copping the odd error, knowing that on balance we'll come out on top and the last thing the opposition wants is to play against our forward line in a fast, open game.

The grinding, safety-first style suits us less. Neutralises our strengths.

Bringing in Brodie Smith to replace Laird is a long to the right option. Debuting Edwards is a 45 kick into the corridor.

Re the thread title, it is a symptom of overarching mindset.

We haven't come up with another plan

The reason we do it is it is the easiest position to kick out to for you to defend against from a turnover. I preferred back in the day when we did the huddle and then sprinted but I was in the minority

Haha. I'm the same. Can't they see there is a empty bloody paddock to the left?
Geez, just head one out there occasionally? Wink to our midfield or something. Throw up a sign.
A bit of unpredictability to break up their structures.

I imagine we go to the right so if we get the ball on the wing it favours right footers - which would be the majority of the team?

Because that's what Ken does.

The one player on our list who consistently does something different than this is Keane.

Whether that's because he has a license to do so, or because he simply doesn't listen to the coaching instruction, is up for debate...

It's pretty telling that in those final moments when we're under siege in matches, he rarely seems to be "trusted" with the kick-in duties.

This is true, probably because of his history of telegraphed short kickouts which get intercepted leading to goals.
It's hard to argue against in game-saving mode.

A really sneaky coach would throw to him occasionally, make it look like he's going to go short to drag the opposition forward hoping for an intercept... and then go long, and to the right...

I would suggest Hinge, Curtin, Dawson, Worrell is one of the better group of left footers running around.

Send ROB/Thilthorpe out to the right as the decoy and then kick left to the contested marking abilities of Curtin and Dawson.
