What are peoples thoughts on MM.
I was watching a game it might have been against the pies and the commentator (tim watson or david Schwarze I think tony shaw might have said it on fox as well) said that he doesnt hit enough targets.

I the went to a mates house and watched the weagles game who he supports and he couldnt believe the precision and hardness that murphy kicked the ball.

Again against st kilda i though he used the ball better than any player on the ground. It wasn't a skilled game to begin with but he in particular was.

IMO He uses it just about as good as any body in the league along with stevens and seems to be getting better every week. Are the commentators dribbling as usual or am i a bit bias cuz i love him?
Sorry its so long i get a bit worked up.

When I heard that comment about him not hitting enough targets I was infuriated. The odd floater he kicked last year when he was always under immense pressure led people (idiots) to believe his disposal isn't all that good.

What an absolute crock of shit. He is top 3 at the club with footskills with Judd and Stevens. Fev loves him because of it. I've said it before but I believe if Murph, Judd, Stevo were the last kick into the forward line to Fev he'd kick 100.

Murph is all class. Skills are sublime. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an ignoramus (Hi Ox, you idiot).

/end thread :D

IMO he's generally a very good user and more often than not provides precise bullet like delivery to leading forwards.

Last season a case of yips in front of goals crept into his game and definitely affected his confidence in his kicking ability resulting in the occassional field pass uncharacteristically missing its target too.

He's been working his way through that this year and I have certainly noticed the improvement.

What the effectiveness/clanger stats don't tell you is how many millimeters/milliseconds he is away from having his body drilled into the turf while he is kicking (very often the case with Murph) so I wouldn't read too much into them.

Commentators who really have no idea what they're talking about, Tony Shaw being a prime example, will simply draw conclusions and make up sh!t on the spot (for the sake of having something to say) based on the stats they have in front of them without any further knowledge or thought into what may be behind those stats.

i have nothing to say apart from

I wouldnt listen to Schwarze, Shaw and Watson

they are a waste of space

&

Murphy is a gem!!!

with the introduction of Diesel....Murphy will be showing his potential!!!

Does miss the odd target but once he gets that right he could be a really top midfielder. He's overall game has improved this year, having Juddy there has helped take some of the pressure off Murph.

Has great footskills, along with Stevens and Judd.

Just had some problems in front of goal last year.

He is an absolute gun!

Murph has had a good start to the season. Although do we think he can up his ante to become one of the elite mids on the comp. Seems to be content with just doing what he has to do getting his 20-25 possies a week without having a major influence in the game, I have never seen Murph really strangle a game and perhaps its just me but at this stage I don't see him as a gamebreaker. I understand its ony his third year and you would expect continued improvement but I'm really hoping to see Murph become a much more damaging mid like Judd and not like Carrazzo, who gets tons of the footy but with limited influence.

anyone who bags Murph should be shot... plain and simple

absolute gun atm, and is only going to get better

P.S typing this while proudly wearing the number 3 on my back.....GO MURPH

Future Carlton captain, loves the club, sticks up for his team mates and is a brilliant footballer. We can't complain with that.

One of his passes into the forward line against the Weagles (crikey, doesn't that seem like a month back) went like a SCUD Missile - low, direct, super-fast and accurate.

What about that sideways pass to Hampson after wrongfooting 2 or 3 opponents in the 1st qtr v St Kilda IIRC? :)

Thanks guys. Think I will sleep better now knowing he is as good as i thought he was.

Hate to rain on your parade but I was of the opinion that Murph is a great user of the ball, but he is not that flash. I couldnt be bothered but have it from a realible source that his efficiency by foot is around %70.

Since I was told of this fact I have regularly checked his efficency is the herald sun and it is on average around this mark. I have concluded that he uses the ball extremley well in the forward half and his goal assists are fantastic, but can be a little lazy around the ground.

Was that the one he missed kicked and Fevola read better then Glass because he had turned Glass around... Murph is an absolute gun but has been lacking confidence this year so much so that he has been refusing to take set shots at goal and plays on to take that focus off his goalkicking... hope its just a phase and he works through this with improved confidence.

I belive Judd made Kerr in the last few years and I now belive Judd would make Murphy into a super footballer Kerr once was...

I know you wrote set shots in your post, but can't see how you can say Murph has lacked confidence with his goal kicking. Did you see his goal on the run against WC? He would have had another beauty on the run in the same game if Fisher had've shepherded it through. Trying to think when Murph has actually had a set shot this year?

FWIW he's kicked 6.3 this year, as opposed to last year's 2.8 after the same amount of games. He kicked 10.17 for the year last year.

Exactly, he hasn't although there has been a few opportunities when he has played on to creep closer and put himself under pressure and missed by doing this, I think it was Melbourne or Adelaide when i noticed this and thought he was lacking confidence, he also done it a bit in NAB games. I was thrilled when he backed himself with that goal and the checkside on the run against whoever it was after he laid another superb tackle to gain possession.

Fair enough... Well, at least we can see he is improving with it. :thumbsu:

His confidence by foot has returned to where it should be after a case of the yips (particularly in front of goal) last year. Will be good enough to play for Victoria as early as next year - not that there will be a match but he will be at that standard. ;)
