Not wanting to sound like bee dee, but...

Does anyone else know about the Mark Powell story. I've heard he has quit football and gone back to Sydney with his girlfriend, who couldn't settle in Melbourne. Part of the reason was that said girlfriend's father offered Powell big money to work for him.

That sounds like the sort of thing Mark Powell would do. I met his mum on a plane to Melbourne for his first game and had a big chat about his career. He basically said that he had problems with motivating himself when he lived at Narranderra and got a huge culture shock when the family moved to Albury because he "had to try the whole time".

He DID have ability BUT to me had a somewhat suspect attitude to his footy. Wasn't prepared to put in the hard yards to make it at the top level and be the player he possibly could have been.

I can imagine the Roos are not particularly amused. Still, with the Swans having copped the "Sydney is ********, I can't wait to get out of here" attitude from both players and players' spouses over the years, I DO have to admit that I'm kind of giggling about the scenario now the bot is well and truly on the other foot this time around. :p

All we hear down here is how the Sydney life is so much more freeing for them all. And Fruity Allison came to you guys because his wife's career made Sydney his target location. It's hardly a one-way street any more, especially since Lockett and now Hall have made hay up north.

Regardless, if true it's annoying that neither he nor his partner thought through whether they wanted to live here a few weeks earlier. I know it's a late pick and all but I'd be annoyed starting the year a player short - we could have done something more useful than this. Oh well, early good luck for a rookie, I suppose.

Lockett, Roos, Hall, Maxfield, Schwass

I have not heard anything official. Do we have a source or is all this just hear say. "I heard it from a friends uncles mothers dogs cousin".

Footygoss.com is usually straight onto stories such as this and they have not said anything yet. I dont know much about the kid myself. Never seen him play so I dont know if he is any good but depth is pretty important in modern footy.

As you know, Schwass was traded for Shannon Grant, who wished to return home.

Powell certainly was good enough to make it as an AFL footballer, but my impression of him when seeing him play and from a couple of conversations was that he was not prepared to make the sacrifices to play the game.

He certainly didn't leave Sydney because of a lack of opportunities, he was given plenty but didn't take them.

If he beleived that he needed to be traded bacause of a lack of opportunities then he is sadly mistaken and with what has happened now probably shows the above thinking to be correct.

Seriously though, what a selfish pr*ck. All very well to say your heart's not in it - but what about all the other bloke who missed out on a spot on an AFL list because of him?

I bet Shane Woewodin would be delighted...

Could not agree more and it would seem that the Swans thought he didn't fit into their "no d*ckhead policy" hence they traded him.

My guess is that they would have delisted him had no-one been interested.

Infuriating player to watch at reserves level because he would rip it up for a quarter, take contested mark after contested mark in the forward line, and then go missing for the rest of the game.

His intensity level was woeful compared to the likes of Malceski, Schmidt, Vogels, Grundy etc, who generally looked like they were busting a gut for the full game, even when the team was its customary 15 goals ahead midway through the second half.

I wonder if North would have used the spot to take Woey if they knew about Powell and his mindset.

Yes i think we would have. Simpson was full of praise for Woey and his dedication at training. Kris Shore who was badly interupted by injury in the few years he was on our list was another player who would have come close to being given another chance.
