Mongrel - who has it who doesn't ? Does it Matter?

At Carlton we have players that have (almost) spent their entire career injured ...
We have certainly rolled the dice on a few injury prone types over the years. Usually does not end up well.

So is there a diff between mongrel and a competitive beast? Or are they the same thing?
I'd imagine that everyone has a slightly different take like with elite or a-grader.
Personally I'd say that Selwood, Hodge have played with mongrel. (I tie mongrel in with physicality/aggression)
Someone like Walsh however, would be better described as a competitive beast.
Really though, it's essentially footy jargon without a set meaning.

Yeap, think you’ve nailed it. This is the way I think of the two terms.

The last player to have mongrel for CFC was Fraser Brown.

The only players on our list who have a smidgen of mongrel are Stocker, Williams and Mitch McGovern. They don't mind hurting players, or stamping their physicality.

Cripps, Walsh, Kennedy, JSOS, Martin, Weitering, Ed Curnow and Newman are uncompromising ball players who will bowl a player over to get the ball, but lack mongrel.

Hopefully the top three can stay on the park and play confident footy, which will allow them to display those little bits of mongrel we lack..

My definition of mongrel is the bloke that is copping a physical flogging from his opposition but keeps getting the ball anyway.
I love the players that seem to get the most “attention” from the less skilled but still impact the game. Mostly without fuss.
Murphy & Judd are the two that stood out for me.
Murphy broke his body for CFC and it pisses me when people can’t see this.

Maybe - Murphy wouldn't have copped the scragging if he had some team mates in the team looking after him better and coaches who had a clue about it.

Voss wrote the book on looking after teammates!

Nice to have a coach with mongrel.

Nowhere to hide for the whole list when he asks for more.

This .. I so hope THAT is the case. No bullshit squibbing, no "yeah nah I'll make a visible attempt" BS ...

Just ****ing GO! And go HARD. If you lose .. you lose, but FFS don't leave anything out on the field.

Ratten was as tough and brave as they came. Consummate in-and-under professional
Malthouse was tough & rugged
I don't know much about Bolton's style of play, but I assume you don't win a TFL B&F as a midget (or survive as Calrko's lieutenant) if you're soft
Teague won a 'League's bravest footballer' award one year?!?!

Our last four permanent (ish) coaches were all tough buggers. OK, more tough/brave than angry/aggressive. But all very far from soft.

Obviously Voss is the gold standard on tough and played more aggressively than the other coaches. But it's not like our previous coaches have lacked mongrel.

Note: some of this depends on your definition of mongrel; whether its bravery, fighting through injury, mental fortitude, ability to take a hit, pushing through pain, dishing out bumps to opponents or all of the above etc...

Whatever the case, I have been waiting since the late 90s to see our team play with a tough edge. Fingers crossed Voss is the man to deliver it.

yeah, good on ya......

JustaBattler been a while since I have seen any inductees. Given your OP, any chance of an update to the "Team of Mongrel" and what positions are still lacking this quality?
Will provide detailed thoughts and updates soon since you asked so nicely...

but I think Voss has made it clear what minimum expectations are to the playing group..and for the most part are delivering when it is their turn to go...

New list might have to talk about levels or grades of competitiveness...

Not many squibs on our list this year for this very reason.

For mine it makes those who don't make the complete effort stand out like a sore thumb (even if it's only singular incidences and they're good most of the time).

It also demonstrates that in many cases it's an affliction of an entire team or unit rather than solely individualistic in nature (past vs present)

We now have a team that goes to war together. We haven't had that since our glory years - even in Judd's tenure it was individuals but rarely the team (e.g. it's why we all loved Mitch Robinson and Dennis Armfield as they stood out).

Even those whose application of mongrel is inconsistent have shown prior signs that they have it in them somewhere.

For example, LOB's shown on occassion that he can bring it. As he continues to hone his craft and build confidence I'm perhaps more excited about this aspect of his game shooting up than anything else. He has the potential to be a hard as rails modern winger if he wants it and it's why I'm glad Voss is perservering.

Not sure why he got dropped from the GCS game and got made the scapegoat. Kennedy and Cerra were terrible (15 possessions each when Crippa wasn't out there) and were a big part of why we lost that game.

here I was thinking it was tdk getting rag-dolled by witts and no-one turning up after 2 minutes into the first quarter? I'm still learning.........
