NAB League 2021: No. 1 pick hopeful Nick Daicos stars again, but AFL mid-season rookie draft contenders also impress
While all eyes were on Nick Daicos after his 40-disposal game, another young gun ensured recruiters wouldn’t miss him after amassing a stunning 300 SuperCoach points.

Marc McGowan

Forty-four Nick Daicos disposals weren’t enough to inspire Oakleigh Chargers to victory against Murray Bushrangers on Saturday but strengthened his claims on the No. 1 draft spot.

Collingwood will have to wait until November to select Daicos as a father-son selection, but several AFL Mid-Season Draft contenders showed their wares in the match at Wangaratta.
Daicos’ teammate Ned Moyle starred with 19 disposals, eight clearances, six tackles and 23 hit-outs, while Patrick Parnell, Zavier Maher and Cam McLeod were prominent for the Bushrangers.

Parnell racked up 30 disposals and 168 ranking points down back, with Maher matching that possession tally and winning five clearances in his first NAB League appearance of the season.
McLeod booted a season-high four goals to also be a standout.
All four of those players can be picked in the mid-season draft on June 2, as can Sandringham Dragon Charlie McKay, the son of Carlton great Andrew, who exploded with 37 disposals on Saturday.

However, the player leading all-comers in ranking points this year – and also up for grabs on June 2 – is Northern Knights midfielder Joel Trudgeon.

Others to enjoy big weekend outings were Falcon Noah Gribble (36 disposals), Stingray Bayleigh Welsh (33) – in his first game in 2021 – Power’s Chance Doultree (34, two goals) and Rebels pair Fraser Marris (38) and Josh Rentsch (five goals).
Worth mentioning, too, was the performance of Port Adelaide footballer Xavier Duursma’s 15-year-old brother Zane, who kicked three goals on debut for Gippsland Power.

The 4 I'm keen on at the moment that should be around our pick are Sonsie (unlikely), Callaghan, Simm and Chesser.

Callaghan is one that could rise as he gets more midfield time.

Snapshot: Callaghan is a classy mover with great agility for his size, and has shown a high level of development to prove his balance of outside and inside traits.

One who seems destined to end up in the top 10, and potentially top five come year’s end, Callaghan has enjoyed a substantial rise in stocks in the first half of 2021. The flying wingman/half-back is difficult to stop at full flight, with his blend of straight line power and swift agility proving difficult to combat. While he is working on becoming more outwardly damaging with his disposal, the 18-year-old is quite a clean user of the ball by hand and foot. He is capable of gaining good meterage on the outer with speed and his long boot, but recently showcased his potential on the inside as the Dragons shifted their magnets.

Season so far:

Starting as a half-back who would roll up to the wing, Callaghan built on the promise he showed during preseason and at training in years gone by with a terrific NAB League debut. He gathered 19 disposals against Oakleigh and looked ominous, with his Round 4 and 5 performances cementing his top 10 potential. Callaghan booted a goal from 24 disposals against Dandenong, before shifting to the inside against Western to rack up a high of 31 touches. While he has played in midfield at school football level, that confirmation of his inside/outside balance rose his ceiling even further. He also built into the AFL Academy game, showing some dash on the outside.

Evasion and agility is what we need for our midfield. Great height aswell.

I haven't seen any footage so far even so I'm talking through my arse but I'm worried that we've seen this playbook before in a HBF that has had a few runs in the midfield. He does sound like a gun though. The good news is that this draft is stacked with good mids around where we should be picking. It would be good if we could take a guy like Sonsie or Roberts and chase Gibcus with another first. Gibcus is supposedly a gun tall back and looks the business. Otherwise see if we can get Raak later in the draft.

My gut feel is we will end up with Callahan. Local boy, goes to st Bedes.
Another beda boy we would be looking at is blake Howes. Can play CHB and CHF.

Yeah don’t want to get too locked into him in case he’s picked earlier , to avoid disappointment .

Hope Hawks pick Sonsie …

Disagree with comments that draft not that good , have a least 27 players that are
pretty likely myself .

Like Finn a lot …to me he is Inside / Outside ..mid we crave.
Really like Chesser too..if gone Johnson (WA)
Yeah like Howes but prefer Conway at Western Jets ..tough , smart .

Don’t like Roberts at all for us …..

I haven't been into this draft at all so far except reading bios. I was into Sonsie from hearing second hand about him, sounds very good.

Sorry, I'm just gonna bumble into this conversation. What's your take on Ned Long? Looks like a serious unit and kicks goals..

Never seen him play live so hard to comment, but appears to be the type we should be after .

But we need 6 quality midfielders over next 2 years , been neglected.

Ok mate let’s see who are better players over their careers .

My eyes in no particular order

Finn Callaghan

Campbell Chesser

Matthew Johnson

Josh Fahey

even Liam Conway ..

They are rippers only one unsure about is Sinn …who is highly rated and like.

For mine you only need small viewing to realise Horne & Diacos are very good .

Daicos and Horne are the two best by far.

I have Sonsie at 3 because of his inside out ability and he kicks goals. He also has abit of toe to break a line. If we go about the rest of the year as I see happening(with us getting pick 4). Every chance we could land Sonsie and someone you rate. especially if the hawks move Mitchell on, Roberts starts looking like an ideal pick at 3.

My draft mate got me on to Sonsie early on, he's rated him for ages and hyped him up so much that I find it hard to let go of the dream. Apparently he started this year a bit slower than expected and had dropped off a bit so even when I expected we were still going to be okay in 2021 I thought he could just happen to slip out to us. That would be amazing if he is still available. Sounds like Stewies Sandy brigade are a pretty fair crop as well and we had a few decent chances at academy kids didn't we?

I was thinking earlier. He reminds me of someone so familiar and I can’t quote call it.
Then I saw the Dal comparison and I thought, yeah I can see it. Especially the 05 Dal that attacked abit more. Boy could we do with a player like that.

Especially with Crouch winning inside ball. Having some silk on the outside like what we hoped Billings would become would be incredible. the silver lining of 2021 is that we are in the pick range to end up with an elite talent. Please God, Buddha and Allah and anyone else listening, bestow the visionary powers of Simon Dalrymple, Steven Wells and Kinner Beatson on Libba for one year.

This is probably the most important period of his career. It's make or break for him and us IMO, hopefully no more going off script like some kind of doped-up jazz maestro that refuses to use structure in his free form virtuosity. Just meat and potatoes best available players with premium picks.

I haven’t seen any of these kids live and the championships are later this year but Callaghan seems made for us from what I’ve read and highlights.

Three of my nieces and nephews boys are at st bedes I must ask them what they think.

Sonsie looks like a star.

A silkie goal kicking mid that wins his own footy.

That VFL game for Box Hill proved he will be ready to play senior footy from day dot

Worth watching that game for anyone that wants to check him out, pretty sure it's still on Kayo.

Don’t do this to me. I’ve already got my heart set on him.

He'll be gone by our pick I've got no doubt.

I like Sinn, Callaghan and Chesser but like many I think you'd like like to see them show they are genuine mids first.
I was hoping there was a few who really impressed in the carnival like Sinn or Callaghan - That Gws could really use. I also feel like the hawks would take a strong left footed ball pig that hits the scoreboard in Roberts (plays like Oliver - with better disposal apparently)

that would give us Sonsie. (I have us finishing 15th)

I just want a player that’s makes the opponent s**t themselves. Dusty in the mid takes 2 opponents to tag him, he goes forward and takes a key defender. He either racks up clearances and inside 50s or kicks freakish goals. Steele is fantastic in the midfield and has been serviceable in the forward line. Not sure he’s a guaranteed threat there though, a lot of his goals have been flukey. There’s no team fearing when he rests forward.

I want a Liam Ryan type.

Ultra skillful and makes the opponents s**t themselves because you know he's either going to kick a goal or hit someone lace out.

We don’t have enough of those. There’s players that can sometimes kick well but I want one who’s when we see the ball’s in their hands we rest easy knowing magic is about to happen
