I reckon the ashes will be real close . England has the better batting line up but the Aussies are ahead with the bowling. I think if England start well and can keep a healthy squad they are in with a real chance.
A fit bowling attack with the likes of Archer, Wood, Carse, Atkinson & Stokes who has his pace back again can do some real damage and one bowler who really impresses me and shouldnt be underestimated is Tongue. Keep an eye on this bloke. He can be a bit wayward at times but he has some real quick pace and bowls some real jaffers. He hits the stumps a lot , takes wickets and caused Smith a few problems in the last ashes with some brilliant deliveries that dismissed him..
On of the poms big problems down under previously has a been a lack of a quality spinner. They just haven't been able to tie down an end and give the quicks a rest. Big difference bowling 20 overs a day as a quick rather than 15
Bashir has some talent but can see the Aussie batsmen targeting him

I do agree with that. Bashir is an interesting case. Can barely get a game for his county team and has been out on loan. He does get a lot of bounce being tall and bowls some ripper deliveries and he does get a lot of test wickets but does bowl some rubbish at times. If he bowls well and ties up an end like you say it will help the fast bowlers. The Aussie batsmen will need to target him when he plays but that could also result in them getting out to him

I'm not convinced English batters will do that well on the current Australian pitches. Whatever your view, our current place in the climate cycle has shifted conditions and affected pitches rapidly over the past few years. Down here in Melbourne some historically rock hard or crumbling pitches are getting stickier from the heat/rain cycles. Shield and ODD matches across the country look like they reinforce that trend through the cycle/season.

To me Bazball looks like it's still adjusting to its place on the flat pitch/aggression scale (think: hot/crazy scale), and they're not eqiupped to pricing the risk at the lower end (active wicket) of the pitch axis. Positive expected return is comfortably with Australia

Just not convinced on the Aussie batting yet. Very reliant on Head & Smith. Carey is pretty handy but has a few too many brain farts. Looks like Labuschagne is getting some runs finally so he may move the needle

As a neutral Im looking forward to this series..My heart says it will be close, but my head says the poms are normally beaten before they even arrive in Aussie

Yeah this... get in the queue. Should be all over by Melbourne. Earlier if it's real hot. 3 B2B Tests. Yep, no chance.

As for Smithy and Head, they are 2 of the best players in the world. Absolute champions who should relish smacking the Poms to all parts of Country.

Smith aint the player he once was.. what's his average been the last few years ? maybe 40 ? i know he's been a stop gap opener but still hasn't been as consistent. He'll cop a lot of short balls too and Archer & Wood are pretty sharp

Head is averaging just over 40 for his career ..good but not a great

now both these guys could have great series but its not like Aussie sides of the past that had a top 6 averaging 40 plus

when I first got to aussie I thought they had to use XXXX as a label because it wasn't legally beer
I’m almost certain that is water straight out of the Brisbane River and canned… awful crap

Think you have overestimated Head a bit. His record is far from great. Good but definitely not one of the best in the world . Just saying

Smith has been a bit down in 2 of the last 3. Still averaging 56+ at Test level so goes ok, I reckon. Probably not in Bradman-like form of 2022/3 though.

Head doesn't bat like a cricketer per se, is still one of the very best going around. Can absolutely take Test away from you in a session and a bit.

Gun IMO. Best player going around.

Just saying, you wouldn't know what you're on about. Your synthetic career in the 3rds (probably) shows that you don't take strike rate and game winning abilities into consideration. It's not just important, it means everything in today's cricket.

Joffra ain't Pat 🏏
Fast bowlers generally have issues in their younger years, then come back has they mature
But yeah, will be interesting how he goes here as a big unknown

Weatherald in, hopefully gets a gig. Will probably depend if Green can bowl.

Should be enough on home soil.

Awesome news re Weatherald. Deserves a crack. He's good.

Starc
Head
Smith
Hazlewood
Carey
Boland

There the 6. They have to play to their level or it'll probably be close.

Probably need Uzi to wind back the clock too.

Can anyone explain how and why Sean Abbott keeps getting picked in these squads? After watching him get hit for 55 off 3 overs the other night I got to wondering how he is continually in and around the Australian team in all forms. He's 33 years old with a first class bowling average of over 30, yet here he is in the Aus test 15 man squad again. He's not quick, he doesn't really do much with the ball, he doesn't take a lot of wickets. Seems odd to me.

There is no explanation.

I'm going with "Photos" Abbott from now on. Surely there is some tearaway 18 year old in QLD that we can use instead.
