Do you think they need a safety fence alongside the roads in Summer Bay? It's cawnage out there!
No way! Car crashes are a big part of H&A

What's their problem with it being declared endangered?
If it is declared to be endangered by UNESCO it undermines their pro-coal platform which got them over the line in 2019 with a swag of mid-Queensland seats that historically have been split between the major parties.

The reported reef damage is due to a combination of global climate change (warmer waters, more storms off the Queensland coast, etc) and runoff from the mining and agricultural industries. One is an indirect cause while the other is a direct cause, but both are closely linked to the fossil fuel industry.

They're wedged.
On the one hand the GBR brings in billions of dollars in tourism, is a symbol of Australia's clean outdoors appeal and is widely regarded as one of the natural wonders of the world so they can't afford to see its status diminished or, worse still, be taken of the World Heritage list. That would hit the regional tourist economy as well be seen as the smoking gun of Australia's inaction on climate change.

On the other hand they can't afford to withdraw their unconditional support for fossil fuel extraction and export. It not only provides jobs for locals and delivers votes at election time but it is still a huge contributor to national revenues.

If they can convince UNESCO that it is "all fine, nothing to see here" (which it appears they have, at least until after the next federal election) then they can continue with their inaction on the fossil fuel economy and related carbon emissions.

It's a juggling act. They won't be able to keep all the balls in the air forever. Eventually they'll probably fail on both counts (tourism and mining) but as long as they can win another election or two in the interim that's all that matters for now.

Others have pointed out the Fossil Fuel and votes, so I won’t repeat that.

The reef then gets constant external monitoring by the international council. This council will also look at the programs being paid to repair the reef (slush funds) and actually make those programs actually do something. The Feds don’t want their mates running those slush funds to not be made accountable for their failures.

Basically, the House of Cards will start falling down…. And their inability to listen to their Chosen ideological opponents (Majority of Scientists & The Greens), will start to come back and hurt them. I have used the word Chosen, as they could listen to the Majority of Scientists at any time but choose not to. It’s a cluster f*ck of self serving clinging to power.

I also probably need to disclose that I am a Scuba Diver and what is happening to the Reef makes me really really Really REALLY f$&king ANGRY!!!!

So much so, that we are moving North and will go and do something about it. I have lost a lot during Covid, so my priorities in life have now changed.
I love this attitude...I've wanted to live in nth qld all my life but the Mrs put a stop to those dreams pretty quick.

My Mrs is the one driving the move to Nth Qld. I would prefer Sunshine Coast but she thinks we need to show progress in Nth Qld for the project to be taken seriously.
I will struggle big time with the heat in Nth Qld…. I would much prefer to live in the mountains like The Rockies or Himalayas.

Heat and humidity gets pretty oppressive and water unswimmable in places but beautiful, cheaper than main parts of QLD and if you want to help the reef gotta be up there.

Disappointed we'll lose you from western Victoria, but best wishes, hope all goes well with the move, and things turn around for you LittleG

Keep up the good fight, stay safe... and Go Dogs! 🔴⚪🔵

The hinterland is much cooler and not too far west from Cairns. Much more comfortable, actually Gods country, so beautiful. I used to live in the Gold Coast hinterland, and although Gold Coast is not tropical like North Queensland the difference there was remarkable too.

Melbourne Storm currently chasing history. In the midst of the second longest winning streak in NRL history. Won their 17th consecutive game tonight. Incredible organisation.

As long as they win the one that matters. I have a Dogs Bont Storm multi going ;)

Until 2016, being in Sydney to watch the Storm win the premiership in 1999 was the most exciting live sport I had ever been at. Only in my second year of membership and a premiership. Of course waiting 39 years for the Doggies to win added a bit more satisfaction that October day five years ago.

Best coaching any sport in this country by a fair margin

My cleaning lady left her jacket here on Wed(her first day) and just came to get it. She brought a small Ferguson Plarre cake, put a candle on it and sang Happy Birthday to me. What a lovely thing to do.
