SPP had a rough upbringing but there were no character issues with him. The opposite in fact, he was a good kid

There were no reasons not to draft him other than Venables was considered to be better - only time will decide that and not just 2017

What's frustrating is we've overlooked a low risk/high reward option and gone a high risk/slightly higher reward option instead.

The fact that SPP loved the Eagles makes it that much harder to stomach

I wish I could like this multiple times

Very good points put well.

Not sure what you're reading but I don't really see much arguing, just a bunch of us having a go at our recruiters. And no one has had a go at Venables either.

Poor word choice on my part, I meant that we seem to regularly be having the same conversation over and over. To wit:
"SPP so good!"
"Why didn't we draft him?!"
"Venables better be good"
"He hasn't played yet, give him a break and have a go at the recruiters"
"Bloody recruiters!"
"I know, SPP so good! Why didn't we draft him"
Repeat for a day or so, then get distracted by something else, then Port play again and it goes back to the beginning. It's not as incredibly personal and divisive as the Priddis stuff got/is, but it's still incredibly circular. It'll be years before we can compare the two, so technically all we can blame the recruiters for at this point is not picking a guy who's having an impact from day one.

Now there are plenty of other decisions we can criticise the recruiters for *coughMitchMcGovercoughLambhack* but we're not seeing that in-depth analysis and discussion of our past 5-7 years of drafting (and that probably needs it's own thread), we're just getting trapped in an infinite SPP-good/recruiters-bad loop.

I'm not actually opposed to discussing this (or rather, reading about it because this is my one long post for the week, god typing so hard why), but I think it probably warrants its own thread instead of a weekly scheduled cry about SPP.

I like the idea that DV will be as good if not betterbetter than SPP and have total faith in that being the case until it is disproven.
Stop this at once and please spit on the recruitment team and lament our missed opportunity

I think the melts are mostly due to the fact SPP is impacting games right now whereas Venables won't be able to make an impact for a long time.

If we were an average side rebuilding it would be fine but the fact is we have 1-2 years of Mitchell, Priddis and Kennedy and then we will be rebuilding again.

I think people are clever enough to realise that Venables needs time before judging who's going to be better.

But whether or not he ends up better is irrelevant to the fact that SPP would have made us a better premiership chance in this window than DV will.

There is a serious lack of Owen on here, instead you're arguing amongst yourselves???? Get a grip you lot. ;)

I was going to raise the tone with an A Streetcar Named Desire reference but fine.

Guaranteed not to start.

....philistines.

Anyone not mentioning owen should owen up

Weve been owen those purple flogs an owening after out unsuccessful years and now they are kicking owen goals ...

Would SPP be playing though if we drafted him? I doubt he would be in the midfield
