Counter-argument: one of those games was Richmond v Carlton and qualified as an AFL match only in the strictest legal sense of the term.

No, there is clearly an elaborate conspiracy going on here.

Vanables will be set a very high standard by our idiot board. Could see him becoming a whipping boy if he ends up taking a few years to come on.

FTFY

... just kidding. Seriously though I doubt the average punter pays enough attention to know we missed SPP for DV. But however long he takes to develop, the inevitable flak on this board will (hopefully) go towards the brass for making the decision, not the player.

Given our first draft picks since 2013 are all playing WAFL this weekend, I can understand the impatience.
He'd want to turn into a decent player for the sake of our recruitment team
Especially if his injury woes continue. Not looking forward to it
On FB there's people outraged by the fact that we overlooked a kid right under our noses. Lets face it, we have big brigade of idiot fans that have a habit of booing and insulting players. It wont take too long for these numbskulls to turn on venables. I always see venables as someone who will take 2-4 years to get going rather than an instant hit like SPP. Venables could in the end have a higher ceiling and easily become a better player the SPP but we tend to have idiots that our impatient and will start cracking the whips on DV.

Vickery still looks like a a campaigner I see, has the most punchable face in the league

They'll surely turn on Duggan long before Venables.

I actually think by the end of the season Venables could be the better player of the two already.

Anyone else notice Lynch - according to every commentator during the preseason "the game's best forward" - getting frustrated? He looks a bit like Kennedy did a few years ago, throwing his arms out calling for the free.
If Lynch cops closer attention this year with all the hype, interesting to see whether he drops off, or can adjust his style.

19 disposals at 58% by SPP is worse than priddis like
Which understates the impact he had on the match

Kicked a goal from well outside 50 in the third quarter which lifted his side and was a fingernail away from kicking the sealer in the 4th

He showed all the traits today that made me such a fan last year - hard at the contest, chases, not afraid to back himself, can breakaway from a contest at pace, finds the goals and is a strong big bodied mid.

Added to that he was a diehard Eagles supporter who loved the club and had exposure to our system through East Perth. From all reports he was a great kid who got to where he was despite considerable adversity.

There were a lot of reasons to recruit him and it would have been a great feel good story had we done so

For a club that's been traditionally risk averse with their first round draft picks we overlooked the obvious choice. Instead we went the higher risk/higher reward option with the more talented Venables who was considered a top 10 pick by some but had issues with his foot/feet. He's also a Victorian lad so he will always be a potential flight risk

Now I like the look of Venables but if his feet remain an issue or he goes home early or doesn't fulfil his talent then the recruiters deserve a bollocking for passing on a player that was right under their nose

Alternatively if Venables develops into a bigger stronger version of shuey then they deserve the plaudits

Not that it's hard to find hypocrisy in the AFL these days, but I heard a lot of Bombers fans booing JOM before his set shot. Dude has had a lot of hard luck AND dons fans are meant to have of a strong stance on booing. What happened there?

RIP my tips for round 1
Yep

Tipped Melbourne so not as bad as some

Gave my colleague absolute hell for tipping Brisbane

I'll have to apologise

He also tipped Carlton and Essendon
