Predictable outcome. Magical thinking to believe Maynard directed contact once he left the ground.

After that fact was established the AFL would have needed to argue that spoiling wasn't his intent. Which is so obviously not true.

Laura Kane off the bad start on this one.

A young man’s future is at stake, we’ll take as much time as we need… and we’re not talking about brayshaw
This won't be Angus's last football concussion if he keeps playing.

I think it's the only reasonable decision they could come to, but I'm uncomfortable with it and I think a lot of people are.

There needs to be some serious soul searching over the off season about what we want the game to look like, and if we're happy to accept these results to 'protect' the game.

I really dislike Maynard as a player and really feel for Brayshaw as a player, particularly with his history of concussion, however for me this is a fair result of what I still consider a legitimate football contest. You can't change your direction once airborne, the reason he was airborne was a genuine football incident (spoiling attempt) and you have the right to protect yourself from injury on the way down.

If it was Max Gawn in front of him he would have bounced off, max probably stares him down and Maynard is probably the one sore. (obviously not knocked out)

Why is a bad start for Laura Kane?

Regardless of the result, referring it was the right decision.

"We find that Maynard's decision was reasonable. He committed to the action several metres away.

"We are not at all satisfied that a reasonable player would see that the impact or outcome (injuries) that resulted were inevitable."

The outcome is that Maynard's decision to jump and spoil was reasonable, and his decision after that - to brace for contact - was also reasonable. I find it hard to disagree with that at all.

I agree with the sentiment, I think the arguement should have been was it reasonable to leave the ground in this instance.
He was no where near going to make it to spoil the ball and should have foreseen the damage his action could have done.

This decision is going to open a whole can of worms for the AFL and i'd expect changes both to the rules and to the MRO process going to next year on the back of it.

That’s not a great result for what the game wants.
They are saying leaving the ground in a reckless manner is all good with the result. How late is late? Can you just line up someone kicking the footy jump into them shoulder first after they’ve got their kick away and it’s just a down the ground free kick while they get stretchered off?
Because you were late trying to smother and committing a “football act”?

If you line them up, then it's a completely different set of circumstances.

Interesting that bracing for contact during a contested footy can get you suspended if you accidentally KO someone in the contest but turning your body after an unrealistic spoiling attempt so it lines you up for a perfect hip and shoulder is fine.

The chook raffle continues.

Grading the incident was wrong. It should have gone to the tribunal because it simply fell outside the remit of the MRP to charge Maynard.
