It’s my Mum. Ma Gander she is sometimes called - or that’s what the orphaned children of the village call her. She bakes gingerbread for them each week. Or used to, her eyes are failing of late. She’s pretty frail these days - alone in her simple, whitewashed cottage just knitting for charity and listening to the wireless. There’s never been much money in the family, but always a lot of love.
But even with all of that it was such a joyful moment seeing her face light up that happy day when I told her I had been selected to compete in the national level Werewolf competition!
Our simple fare of bread and dripping for supper that night was like dining on honeydew, and I was quite emotional when I realised I had made her proud.

Right now I can picture Ma Gander, waiting for the village postmaster hoping for news of how I am going. It makes me tear up thinking of her lined and battered but still kind face alight with anticipation that I might win just one werewolf game!

I confess I didn’t sleep well, knowing that I was going to have to tell her that I failed. It was never about the money, though I would have pawned the WW trophy. I would use the money to pay for a specialist and see if their is any chance that they can fix Ma Gander’s eyes and she can read Ian Rankin again.

See this is what I’ve been turning over and over in my mind. I’ve always been a bit of a disappointment. An ordinary WW player. Pretty average at sudoku. I am okay at that thing where you have a tennis ball attached to a string on a pole, but I never made the Nationals.

I’m not afraid of death. Shame about Ma Gander’s eyes that certain people like dero don’t even think about.
And that’s even before I told him about my crippled brother, wounded in the Great War, who needs money for a wheelchair so I can take him out sometimes in the sunshine to look at birds.
