just a bit of a fun tangent. does the fact the swans gws. gcs and brisbane being made up mostly of victorians mean they are in fact defacto teams that allow victorians and to a lesser degree sa wa players a place to play. does this mean victoria are basically fielding the nucleus for 14 teams rather than 10.
at what stage if ever will we be able to say, ah the syney swans they truly represent sydney and nsw.

Both QLD and NSW last year had 50 or so players each on AFL club books, so that is a squad and a bit, so it is not much of a stretch to think it can rise to around 80 players each for 2 squads or 2 decent teams.

And this year the captains and coach of Sydney are all NSW born and bred ...... Longmire , Jack and McVeigh.

I think these northern academies may make a big difference, or so Paul Roos reckons, he seems to know a bit ! :)

Anyone know the relevant stats currently?
I'm guessing around
50% vic
20% wa
15% sa
5% nsw/act
5% qld
3% tas
2% nt

dunno but two weeks ago I think the Crows side had 14 Victorians in it. Seems a lot for an S.A. team tbh.

Crows have had more Victorians than South Australians for quite a few seasons now

Just straight out haven't really had access to the best SA talent for quite awhile, Brodie Smith and Wayne Milera the only SA raised first rounders we have in the team

edit; Scott Thompson was a first rounder but not drafted by the Crows

edit 2: Troy Menzel same deal..

either way, it's still a small number

I don't know why an Adelaide team would be expected to have any more South Australians than a Victorian team.

Do you Adelaide avoid the draft now or get academies or something?

You saying Port are accessing the top shelf players or are they going elsewhere?
Only asking 'cause S.A. is such a true footy state and I love watching the SANFL matches, usually pretty high quality on a par with the VFL.

How can there be two teams from NSW/ACT out of a total of 18 in the AFL competition and only have 5% of it's players coming from these areaso_O
To me it looks like the Sydney experiment has failed.

Wait a second that was someone's random guess. Wait till you get the real numbers before you leap to such dramatic conclusions.

both

Adelaide have never really bottomed out, never had the high draft picks (even lost a few) and only twice in recent history has our first round draft picks being from SA - I think Collingwood even has more SA recruited first rounders than Adelaide

Like that time you traded picks 2 and 18 for Wayne Carey :p

There's certainly more than 5% of "it's" players coming from NSW, if by "it's" you are referring to the Giants and Swans lists.

The origin of NSW players in the whole of the AFL though would be about 5%.

There might not be much quantity coming out of NSW, but there's certainly quality considering they made up a decent chunk of the 3peat team!!!

Matt Suckling
Isaac Smith
Taylor Duryea
Luke Bruest
Will Langford

100 % of players divided by 18 teams = 5.5, so clearly some states are over represented and some under, VIC has a clear advantage with the TAC CUP and the money and coaching expertise put into it, they also have 2 teams in division 1 of the under 18's, but also have the population

As we all know they aren't footy states, but with those two states having over 50 % of Australia's population if the sport is to grow in viewing numbers there is no choice than to have that and maybe more. The marketing people will have to work harder to help it reach it's potential.

South Australia usually has between 10 to 15 kids drafted each year with at least 2 first rounders. Adelaide for example collected Milera (SA) and Doedee (Vic) . If Milera wasn't available at our pick I'm pretty sure we would have another kid from Vic. There were three SA first rounders last year. Milera,Burton, Francis. I reckon there will be this year also.

I thought the same thing but was't sure of the ages of the readers. Also unwanted by other clubs cos he was too short, as I vaguely recall?

Unfortunately I believe he was shot the other day though in America.
