Can we make a sticky of this? All future coach talk to come into this one thread.

Contenders IMO
Mark Harvey
Peter Sumich
Guy McKenna
Micahel Voss
Neale Daniher
Chris Bond
John Longmire

Outsiders
Kevin Sheedy
Dennis Pagan
Dean Laidley
Grant Thomas :(

harvey has got 7 weeks to show everyone how much he wants a head job

if we could win 5 games or at least play a tough, competitive, accountable style he will be the front runner

daniher shouldnt get the job and i thik laidley will remain with the roos

Mark Harvey
John Longmire
Chris Bond
Neale Daniher
Peter German

In that order.

If the team under Harvey (presuming he is named 'Interim') performs with 5 wins or more then he'd be favorite. Even if they don't win 5 or more but the teams 'shows' a better application to playing footy then I would think he'd get it.

Longmire I think would bring great experience from Sydney (who have unquestioned discipline and hardness)

Bond has a wealth of experience at different clubs.

Daniher - meh!

German - I dont know that much about him but from what I've read and heard he's a solid candidate.

------------

I think the main thing is that the next Head Coach needs to be a player's coach first and foremost. The player's have to want to play for him.

Freo need to go for someone local and Peter Sumich is the perfect fit.

The whole department throughout its history has had a Victorian flavour to it and Sumich will get the job done.

Left field - Ric Charlesworth

I would absolutely hate for Peter Sumich to get the job.

1st preference: Leigh Matthews, we have big dollars to throw around.

I wouldn't mind Michael Voss or Mark Harvey.

Aim high, I say for the FFC...

1st options;
Blight, Pagan, Laidley(warming to him), Senior Coaching Experienced.

2nd options;
Harvey, Bond, Voss,

No chance;

McKenna

Not trolling, but michael voss has huge potential to mould in to one of the quality coaches in the competition due to his obvious leadership qualities, his tactical knowledge and his recent AFL playing style experience. I think with a fresh coach, a squad re-shuffle and a recruitment re-vamp, you guys could become a genuine flag chance and a force to be reckoned with. Good Luck:thumbsu:

We need a premiership coach.

Its all there ready to go once the list is emptied out a bit.

Sheedy #1 for mine, #2 Pagan

Forget anyone else who hasnt coached to a flag

Just want to see the following things happen :
1..Toughen the players up
2..No crying for free kicks antics - earn the things
3..Drop players who are under performing to the WAFL
4..Dont be so predictable
5..Stop the players reading the papers about how good they allegedly are
6..Train harder - It irks me Whiska's comments when he came up to watch from Peel, that the dockers dont train hard enough.

daniher - no way

Harvey has well earnt the chance to take over the caretaker role for at least the remainder of the season. No question!

So how the club performs in this period will decide if he continues in this role. If he did poorly I would love the club to throw some money at Wayne Carey.

Blight = won't come out of retirement.

Pagan = Norr...i'd be really surprised if he was sacked from Carlton and pick up a senior role again straight away.

Laidley = Staying at the roos.

Harvey = The odds have to be on him, see how he brings the troops home this season, and already has a relationship with the players....but is this a good thing? Maybe they need some new blood.

Bond = Has got to be looked out, knocking down the door for a senior spot.
Comes from the new age school of coaching, my money's on him.

Voss = Do Fremantle really want to take the risk? Sure if you were rebuilding, but Freo has a chance at a flag in the next few years and trusting a guy who hasn't even really sat in the coaches box is a gamble.....and i don't think it is worth it.

Longmire = Another assistant who will get a senior job in the next few years, we have seen how Ross Lyon has adopted the Sydney game to StKilda. Do Fremantle want apply the same tactic? I suppose we don't know if he will try just that, but I actually think he would be effective with Freo's players.

I have a couple of Questions?
Why did they want CC to coach 2 more weeks?(it would be pointless)
Why hasn't harvey taken the caretaker coach position straight away?

Who knows what these assistant coaches will be like but Longmire,Bond and Harvey have been passed up by lesser known coaches so I don't like there chances but my guess is O'Donnell. As for an experience coach there is none worth getting that is available at the moment.

From your list wizard, I'd like to immediately de-select a few that i reckon would not be good choices for our club:

That would leave:
Harvey
Voss
Bond
Longmire
Sheedy
Laidley

From that group I reckon:
  • Voss needs some assistant-coaching experience
  • Sheedy is unlikely to move out of Melbourne at his age, and after having achieved so much in his coaching career - unless he sees Freo as the "ultimate challenge" to go out on... :o
  • Laidley is on the brink of something with the Roos - why would he leave them now of all times?

That now leaves:
Harvey
Bond
Longmire

Chris Bond certainly appeals being a former club captain.
Harvey is already here and knows the club well, so he appeals also.
Longmire I don't know enough about...

But the one I'd be opening the cheque book for would be Lethal. Blank cheque made out to Leigh Matthews - with an attached note saying "name your price".

Voss = Do Fremantle really want to take the risk? Sure if you were rebuilding, but Freo has a chance at a flag in the next few years and trusting a guy who hasn't even really sat in the coaches box is a gamble.....and i don't think it is worth it.

It worked for the eagles didn't it? Woosha only had a year as an assistant at Carlton and then thrusted in to the Eagles coaching position, taking us to the finals every year since

Harvey has 7 weeks...but needs to come out & say he wants to coach the club next year ASAP....similar to Paul Roos when Rocket resigned. If he doesn't, I think we'll see some mixed results in next few weeks.

If Harv's wins 5 to 6 of 7 - I think he will be coach in 2008 (pending if Essendon poach him back)

If he wins 4 of 7 - he'll be in the mix still, but an outsider

If he wins 3 or less of 7 - I think he'll be gawnsky

I don't think Laidley is an outside chance...I think he is a clear favourite at the moment from what I've heard & with the board at the Roos not moving in on signing him now, it sounds like Laids may come home.

I think Sumich is an outsider now....with the fan backlash that has been heard, unless he can guarantee to bring Micale with him & let go of the Jakovich idea of him being an Assistant. He'd want to bring a player or two with him as well.

I like Voss very much, but I doubt Freo board will take a punt on him, no matter what team he has assembled behind him already. If he's free as an Assistant after all is done with head coaches, we simply MUST buy him no matter what cost as an Assistant. Nathan Buckley may be available as an Assisant as well.

Imagine LAIDLEY head coach, with Buckley & Voss as assistants.

Neale Daniher is a chance, but I see alot of Connolly traits in his coaching, so I don't think we'll be improving our stocks with him, but I wouldn't be against him coaching.

Sheedy is interesting. IMO I don't think he'll be at Essendon next year, so maybe a 3 year deal at Freo would suit him. He'd be the head coach, & media man but would need strong Assistants, in Mark Harvey & a Voss or similar working in the background.

Blight - no
Bond - no
McKenna - definitely no
Longmire - no
Pagan - no

one year assistant coach>>>>>>>>>>>no coaching experience

Plus has anyone heard Voss talk? About as subtle as a brick. Woosha had the nous to be a coach.

6..Train harder - It irks me Whiska's comments when he came up to watch from Peel, that the dockers dont train hard enough.

If they were referring to Monday/Tuesday training, then of course they don't train hard. It's only meant to be a light session...

you seem to know something we don't?
jyd absolutely loves the NMFC, will stay on

If I were drawing up selection criteria, two that spring to mind are:

  • Not an Eagles person (things go right, 'you had to get an Eagle to fix your mess' etc, things go wrong, well things go wrong).
  • Not a 'nice guy'. Neesham, Drum, Connolly. All likeable, but none commanded the respect that the likes of Matthews and Sheedy do.
I actually think Rodney Eade would make a good fit, but that's just my opinion, and he's unavailable anyway.

It worked for the eagles didn't it? Woosha only had a year as an assistant at Carlton and then thrusted in to the Eagles coaching position, taking us to the finals every year since

Worsfold had two years at Carlton, who were very strong at the time. One under a coaching guru in David Parkin, another under Wayne Brittain. He was also a dual premiership captain of the club, so was hardly an outsider being thrust into a totally new environment.

Laids knows Freo have a better list...he knows the board would have sacked him just like Connolly this year if he didn't make the finals. You guys may still not make the finals, but if you do, I'd say you need to win a final to keep him.

He will be offered more money, he's from WA, Freo has better facilities & he'll probably be given a 3 year deal...he'd be stupid not to pick Freo.

Saying that...there's alot of water to go under the bridge between now & end of season
