Good poll. Ryder almost entirely based on X-factor or whatever other cringe-worthy phrase I can muster to describe him. Both will be 200 game players, but Ryder has the potential to re-write the rules.

Ryder definitely has more 'X-factor', is a better rebounder and can potentially play ruck

Brown will be a much better negating defender

Agree with this.

Brown will be a better stopper, Ryder will also be a good backman but will provide more on the rebound.

Both will win multiple AA's

This is a hard one.

If you're starting from scratch you'd have to go with Brown, but if you were looking to 'complete' your side you'd go for Ryder.

Both look set to become quality players, with Ryder having more raw potential.

Ryder. Nathan Brown is this years over rated Collingwood youngster. Every year its a new on. Who will be next? Anthony? Dawes? Cook?
Collingwood youngsters are rubbish compared to even Essendons

I love it how people still refuse to rate our players even when they keep someone like Pavlich to one goal, or Brown to 2 goals.

Ryder.

Brown 08 = Goldsack 07. Overrated young Collingwood KPP.

Your full of crap Goldsack was never going to be a KPP, wasn't your irsh import who just got delisted going to be the next big thing as a KPP in 07? Poor effort to rubbish Browny

Your a Richmond supporter and your bagging our youngsters? WTF, i get it now no one rates your players therefore they can't be over rated.

Brown will be a AA backman and Ryder will be next to him, they are both Guns in the making and neither are over rated.

Maybe i was a little bit over the top there.

Would still like to have Brown on Carlton's list but would choose Ryder as we have Jamison who i think is a better FB then Brown who just lacks a little pace to keep up with forwards on the lead.

I agree he lacks a little pace but Wakes done alright who wasnt fast, Ryder has the pace but he couldnt play on someone like Jono Brown (BL) if the ball was kicked to a 1 on 1 and strength was needed and not his leadup pace. You cant rely on your ability to get a run up and punch over the top(Gilbee like) every contest. A good full back has his deputies who do the jumping for them when needed and also has the strength to win the battles. Look at scarlett and his men, he isnt the fastest guy but respectable and he is so stong in 1 on 1's, this is where Brown has the advantage over ryder.

Next year will be interesting with Brown and Ryder pretty much the number 1 backman for their team as Fletch and Presti play limited games, it will be crazy if ryder put on a few kegs and kepted his pace.

nathan brown for mine is a much safer bet.

ryder may have mroe potential but we've seen plenty of his type show no improvement and i think he lacks the footy smarts and body positioning thta brown has down to a tee.

i do think ryder could become anything but nathan brown you're almost guaranteed of having a 10-15 year solid fullback who can also play up forward.

i agree with what you are trying to say, but since there is no such thing as a player almost guaranteed as having 10-15 years, i think there is a bigger upside in ryder.

win/win situation though.

like you say, brown is a safer bet, but more of an upside with ryder.

Very tough one. I gave Nathan Brown the nod. Could go either way but. Ryder has more athleticism but i think Brown seems like he could be an elite backmen for a long time.

Agree - Brown looks a Safer Bet and Looks like having a Fantastic Carrier but Ryder looks like Could be an Excitement Machine and Has a Bigger Ceiling then Brown but Ryder also could not live up to his Potential

Most balanced posters in this thread rate Brown highly, as do I.

Don't listen to the nuff nuffs

Not having a dig but how is Brown a safer bet?

Ryder has made CHB his own at Essendon in only two years (albiet he doesn't really have much competition).

Knights has stated and Paddy himself has said he wants to play down back and this year he has taken basically the best forward all the time.

At worst I can see Ryder being a very good backman, he reads the flight of the ball fantastically, has A+ kicking skills and is a great spoiler (top 5 spoils in AFL)

He needs to work on his one on one contests but that will improve with increased body strength

interesting poll. at this stage, both players look likely to make it as key defenders in the afl bu i'm not sure which one will be better. i think it's safe to say ryder will have that ability to just dominate a game but the difference between his best and worst wll be a lot greater than brown's, who seems more of a solid type defender.
