Gooch over KP for me. Elevated himself against the mighty Windies side which deserves respect.

Harsh on KP.

He acquitted himself against the best teams of his generation. None were as good as the windies but he still tamed some good sides in just about all conditions. Gooch averaged 44 against the windies too - a great effort but not superhuman.

Started in the pre-helmet era. Small bats, boundaries to the fence, pitches not as flat.
It's a reason previous generations should be marked up, it was harder to play than now, it's also the same reason I laugh at the thread asking where Warner is amongst the "great openers"... Nowhere ******* near it.

Granted, I’m not saying Gooch wasn’t a gun, but Pietersen has won his side series’ in India, Australia, Sri Lanka etc. he’s played some of the greatest match winning innings of the last decade. He’s got serious credentials.

When picking the England team to take on Australia, I gave some thought to a little-known Northamptonshire player called David Steele.

'David who?', you might ask.

When England was soundly beaten in the first test of the 1975 Ashes series which resulted in the late Mike Denness tendering his resignation as England skipper after putting Australia into bat but ended up seeing England lose by a big margin, his replacement, the late Tony Grieg, chose Steele to bat at no.3 against Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson in the 2nd Test at Lord's.

The English tabloids called Steele, 'the bank clerk who went to war.'

Steele made 50 and 45 in his first test, and ended up making 365 runs at an average of 60.83. Steele was named the 1975 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

I think you raise an important point - the best Ashes team is not necesarily going to be the same as the best ever team from Australia and England. Some players played out of their skin during Ashes series in a way they never matched in other series, some are uniquely suited to Australian or English conditions in a way that their countrymen are not.

The interesting thing about David Steele is after he played for England in the 1976 home series against the West Indies (the one where the late Tony Grieg said prior to the series he would make the West Indies 'grovel', which the Windies used as motivation to beat England badly), he was then discarded by the selectors and never again was seen in a England cap.

Starc has averaged over 30 in his only two Ashes series. Seems a generous selection ahead of guys like Gillespie (20, 15, 34, 24, 100)

Johnson also only averaged less than 30 in one of his 4.

Modern Day - My Two XI's that I can remember watching 2005 series onwards:

Australia:
1. J.Langer
2. M.Hayden - JL & Haydos, the ultimate opening duo
3. R.Ponting (c) - Captain tough
4. M.Hussey - Mr.Cricket, always a saviour in the Ashes
5. M.Clarke - Never really shone in the Ashes but scored a lot of runs at his best position, No.5
6. S.Smith - Modern day great who would be handy at No.6 in this team
7. A.Gilchrist (wk) - 06/07 form
8. M.Johnson - Johnson 13/14 form
9. S.Warne - The King
10. B.Lee - Lethal Binga at his fastest 05,06/07
11. G.McGrath - Lucky to witness his twilight years

v

England

1. A.Strauss
2. A.Cook - Cook & Strauss were a solid opening partnership, destroyed us in 10/11
3. M.Vaughan (c) - Led his side to a historic 05 ashes
4. K.Pietersen - Always played well against us
5. P.Collingwood - Toss up between Bell, Trott & Collingwood, probably had more mental toughness than Bell.
6. J.Root - Another young modern day great who you know will cause us headaches in the future.
7. M.Prior (wk) - Prior had a great series against us in 10/11 but it was a toss up between him and Bairstow.
8. A.Flintoff - 2005 form
9. S.Broad - When he's fired up, he's scary good
10. G.Swann - England's best spinner in the last 20 years
11. J.Anderson - Leading wicket taker, deadly in English conditions
