Draft Expert PMBangers 2023 Draft Thread

Moir has that look about him that reminds me of Jarrod Brander. Just doesn't look up for the contest, and seems to innocuously drift through the game

Hey PMBangers.

Who, for you, is South Australia's top group of ruckmen and is Moir sliding?
I can't say that I really rate the SA ruck crop from my limited viewings, no one really jumping out as better than some of the other options floating about.

And yes I'd say so, looks very much the same player as last season at the moment without any notable improvement, some might even argue he's regressed

Not too relevant but before the U18 Championships how do you rate the individual teams? Which team do you think will be winning this year?

It's a lot more evenly matched than I really ever remember in my time following the draft, I'd still lean towards the VIC teams topping it but would be shocked if see a winless or unbeaten side this year. Overall though Metro once again have the best depth imo

Logan Morris having a good game with 2 goals for Werribee in the VFL. But also went down with what looked like a nasty knee injury. Fingers x it’s nothing serious.

Then you best get your peepers on South Adelaide's athletic 207cm basketball convert Taylor Goad.....Absolute certainty to get drafted...massive massive upside. 2.92 20m at the SA testing early this season.

Can someone please post stats, and info on how the VIC Country, and SA/WA games went yesterday with the draft prospects in them ?

I'd like to start off by expressing how much I enjoyed "get your peepers on" as a saying, that one is getting added to my list

I was unaware of the sprint time, I've watched one of his games so far early in the season and didn't take much notice, looks like I'll have to actually watch SA v NSW now

RMC notes from the second Academy game, some snippets of my favourites from the game;

#4 Jack Delean (South Adelaide/South Australia)
15/04/2005 | 181cm | 75kg | Small Forward/Wing

Usually stationed in the forward 50, Delean played almost exclusively on the wing and certainly gave recruiters something to think about for the rest of the season. Delean’s ball use and composure at ground level made him an impactful player for the Academy, unfazed by pressure as he ran onto ground balls or went for marks with the flight, often making the best decision once he had won it. Delean’s use by hand was particularly notable, threading passes through congestion for teammates running ahead of him to take in their stride. Delean was one who found ways to get free from opponents in transition, providing good leads heading inside 50 for his teammates to kick to, slotting a set shot in first term as reward for one such effort.

#9 Jake Rogers (Suns Academy/Queensland)
02/03/2005 | 171cm | 68kg | Midfielder

A clear best on ground, Rogers played a game that truly defied his size. For the last month Rogers has steadily put in strong performances and raised his draft stocks in the eyes of many, but put together his most complete performance to date in arguably the best game to do so. Rogers ticks a lot of boxes for a modern footballer; clean with disposal, fast, hard at the contest, a good decision maker and a hard worker defensively. It was rare to see a contest Rogers wasn’t involved in when he was on the ground. Rogers was particularly damaging when the ball was in congestion, able to win it himself, or get in a good position to receive a handball before bursting away with unmatchable speed. Rogers’ balance between when to handball and when to kick was a strong factor in the Academy’s clean play around the ground, finding options in space with almost every disposal.

#11 Orlando Turner (Norwood/Northern Territory)
16/05/2005 | 176cm | 67kg | Small Forward/Wing

The sole Northern Territory representative in the Academy ended the day as his side’s sole multiple goal kicker, taking his opportunities in the third quarter to help strengthen the Academy lead. Whilst Turner started as a small forward, it was a move to the wing in the second half that saw him really work into the game. He still applied the same level of pressure and intercepted a few Carlton forays in the front half, but also increased his production and damage with more opportunities in space. Both of Turner’s goals came from set shots; one after marking an attempted switch kick, and the other after going in for the ball and copping high contact. He could even have had a couple of more goals if he held a bit more composure on the run.

#32 Ethan Read (Suns Academy/Queensland)
07/08/2005 | 202cm | 87kg | Ruck

Having played mostly in the ruck for the Suns Academy, Read was given a good run up forward and showcased much of his potential as a new-age tall. He covered the ground superbly and rose for a handful of marks, using his reach to pluck the ball at its highest point. The mobile 202cm unit took a little longer to find his feet in the ruck, having a hard time at the first few centre bounces but faring much better with his capacity to impact away from it. His form poses a mighty conundrum for the Suns in attempting to keep all of Read, Rogers and Walter come draft time.

Yeh agreed with the Moir sentiment. I don't see it. Kinda reminds me of Wayne Milera but not as quick.

Moir is like a shorter version of JUH when running and marking the footy but completely dual sided. He has more talent in his big toe than most of the Under 18 players in the country. Suited to a third tall forward but with midfield abilities long term. His biggest issue is application and defensive want. He can appear lazy and laconic at times and go missing for long periods but also has plenty of runs on the board and has made opponents look pretty stupid at times. You will not find a better dual sided kick outside the AFL than him right now.

Goad could be a monster, shows some glimpses at times of a serious ruckman. When I see him play he reminds me of a young Max Gawn.

Luck is alright, works well around the ground but lacks proper size that Goad has and will likely fall away to state league level only.

I am the leader of the Ashton Moir fanclub. Unfortunately, I have to concur with the issues raised by concerned draft watchers. His work rate really isn't there, and you can just see it through his body expressions at times that he doesn’t want to be there. He just reminds me of Chad Wingard in that regard. I know he hasn’t been getting midfield minutes, but you don’t need midfield minutes to have an impact up the ground. Look at Dylan Moore. It comes down to work rate and desire for the ball. Moir also hasn’t appeared to improve from last season. When he's at his best, he looks like a taller Isaac Heeney to me, but at his worst, he's not very good.

He has the dual sidedness of Sam Mitchell, Jason Akermanis and Steele Sidebottom.

It's as if this is what's plastered all over the SA draft chatter when discussing Moir's credits.

Unfortunately, there's nothing else that's going Moir's way.

At the moment, he's as involved as Cumberland.

Wilson, Rogers, Walter, C. O'Sullivan, McAuliffe, Simpson and even Stevens I'd put above Moir.

Hey Bangers,

What's the word on Darcy Gilbert? Watched him play for Frankston against the Bullants yesterday and looks the perfect blend of size and athleticism that AFL clubs seem to love out of the back half. Didn't see much on him last year as he didn't make the Metro squad. Is he a chance at the end of the year if he keeps improving in the VFL?

Anyone is a chance if they keep improving in the VFL!

Without having watched his VFL games this year I do find it doubtful though, he's a player that didn't have a standout attribute at NAB League level so unless he's randomly developed something that sets him apart from the rest of the options at draft time its hard to see him going

I think Moir and and Duursma are sliding, but when I say sliding still in touch of rnd 1. I really want to see Moir play league. Loving Mitch Edwards atm.

Yeah I wanna see Moir play league too. Hard midfield to break in though at the tigs, might require the AFL clubs season to do some shopping at the bay and take a midfielder or two away at the mid season.

Where do you rate Jack PMBangers, personally I’m a big fan, but I only really see the SA kids so I’m keen to see where you think he lines up against the other forwards like him around the country.
