They'll be right up there in contention. St Kilda are a team, I think, that would be 'happy' to win it. I imagine Melbourne won't go that low again, they're genuinely striving to improve. GWS too. Should be competitive.

Interestingly, some of their [Carlton] fans I've spoken to recently are genuinely optimistic about their finals chances. I wonder if this is, for lack of a better term, delusional or optimistic thinking, or rather that they have a more in-depth knowledge of their lists and its capabilities. A little bit of both probably.

Not sure where this discussion is, but if the bombers can fill their lists from sanfl, does that mean we can too for Paddy and Angus?

2008. His first season. Won the match for them in that last quarter.

The first Power game my 7yo son went to ... on my birthday ... not a good day

...He still remembers it

To what end? If we lose Paddy and Angus, that's development opportunities for people already on our list.

What would happen to Mick if the Blues were to claim the spoon, he'd have to go, surely? Carlton are a long way away, can Mick be in for the long haul. I think they really overrated there list a bit when they brought Mick in, the feeling i got was that they thought they were around the mark and with Mick's expertise could turn from a 6th - 10th ranked side to top 4, but they've gone the other way. I don't necessarily think it's Mick fault, i just think the state of their list is unhealthy.

Backfill for the Magpies.

I equate it to Port between 2010-11. We finished 10th or so in 2010 and looked like improving then were a disaster in 2011. I feel its the same for Carlton this year. I think they are a couple of injuries away from disaster.

Paddy I'm not fussed about, we knew what we were getting ourselves into with him. But with Gus we should absolutely be able to upgrade Krakouer during any suspension.

They'd kill for just about any talls. At this very moment in time, from the outside, their list isn't in great shape, not just in lack of quality talls but also in terms of age profile.

Interesting to see how they approach the next few draft and trade periods.

After Collingwood and Hawthorn have had massive success through tanking, it's nice to see a side that built their list on the back of being chained to the bottom of the ladder, but still weren't able to get anywhere near a flag.

It would have been bullshit if they'd turned their draft sanctions and subsequent years of poor performance into a flag through consistent high draft picks.

Their young players are average, their top draft picks haven't become genuinely matchwinningly elite and the entire club (including Malthouse and Judd when they weren't even at the club yet) seem to have massively overrated their list. Their age profile is that of a club that should be in the middle of their flag window, but they just don't have the talent.

Or it was Collingwood's well-executed plan to take Carlton out from the inside. Send Malthouse, screw the club over, come back and replace Bucks.

Maybe the Blues need John 'Pigs Arse' Elliot to come back and shake the club a bit. He would bully every head coach to success with his Fosters mates back in the 80s/90s.

Meh. We've got it covered.
We havent even filled the cheap seats. Magpies definitely need a couple of decent state level players.

So we take two players from other clubs in the SANFL to play for us in the SANFL? :drunk:

The Magpies are our reserves side. I see absolutely no point in bringing in other players that are not going to be with us in the long term.

you'd assume it'd improve under Steven Silvagni, now he's back at the club

You mean the Steven Silvagni that traded Jack Hombsch and Jake Neade to Port Adelaide for Pick #29? Yeah, he's just the fellow to rebuild Carlton!

Yeah but I think with the salary cap in place 'Pigs Arse' might find things a bit harder.

Not sure Carlton are monties for the spoon but I'd love it if they got it.

yeah....him

and drafted Tom Boyd when they didn't need more tall forwards, just hoarding them like Pokemon

we can play rookies in the NAB challenge anyway but I agree, if he serves a suspension in the regular season, then we should be able to upgrade a rookie for that period.

In saying that

Patton -knee
Boyd - gone
Cameron - gun

imagine if they didn't was a good thing to overload on talls

We could end up with not enough players. The magpies are not just the reserves due to the ridiculous top up player system. Losing two players from that squad would be a hard hit, particularly if the firsts get injured.

Our reserves getting smashed because we are undermanned does not prepare them for AFL.

I'm fairly certain there is no/a massive cap

on The amount of academy players if they fit the criteria

Pfft, there's more competition for the spoon than the flag this year - Carlton, Melbourne, St.Kilda and the Doggies all genuine chances with Colligwood, GWS and West Coast at longer odds and Essendon as a genuine smoky.

No worries then.

West Coast won't come close to the spoon, good coach who is developing a nice rounded list. Their talls in particular are excellent and they've drafted well. As much shit as they copped last year for not beating a team in the top 8... what that does mean is that they beat every team they were meant to, which not even a lot of top teams did.

They're the Pride of West Australia

He's become irrelevant in todays game, ever since they switched away from from paper and went to plastic bags

When a team does that, beats the teams below them but reliably loses to the teams above them, I take that to mean that the club is well coached to the best of the coach's abilities, but the talent is lacking. The big problem at West Coast is the midfield. Their only hope of really improving is if NicNat can have a big season and spoon-feeds their midfield but even then you'd say that 7th is their absolute ceiling.

In the long run they're better off finishing 15th and drafting well but they won't do that. Good to see a rich and powerful club floundering in no-where-land.
