How many Premieship pennants does Geelong fly on match days at Kardinia Park? (I've noticed on TV what appears to be the 07 and 09 pennants flying at the Northern end of the ground.)

Traditionally all clubs flew their Premiership pennants at their home ground for home games. Now with exclusive home grounds in short supply, which if any other clubs still fly their Premiership pennants and where? Also who has seen their clubs' pennants on display somewhere and how many seem to exist?

I wonder if the retrospective awarding of cups for pre 1959 Premierships was in part to make up for pennants in too poor a condition to fly anymore (or with nowhere to fly them) and those completely lost over time. (Fitzroy lost all seven of their pre 1944 pennants in a fire.)

Thanks for posting the picture of the Geelong cups :)

No worries :)

Pretty strange place to put the cups...

Yeah at first I thought it was odd too, but it is called the Premiership stand so that kinda makes sense, and I do like that any average joe can walk past and have a look, have their photo taken with them etc.

Not sure if they fly all of them or not, but they certainly fly at least some of their older flags too. I've sat in the open air boxes in the Premiership stand and the 1925 flag - Geelong's first - is usually positioned on the roof of the Doug Wade stand (which is about to be torn down) on the corner closest to the Premiership stand. They have others on the roof of that stand too, but I can't remember which years.

Question . How can Essendon have sixteen premiership cups , when I think Hawthorn got the first cup in 1961, before that they were presented with something else . A flag perhaps.
Now maybe thats incorrect but someone will say.

I`m absolutely positive that Melbourne got the first cup in 1964. On another note, for my birthday the chesse and kisses got me my very own cabinet with all 16 cups on display. I must have been a very good boy that year.

seconds and thirds and u18s etc are not seniors though, that is the difference between port and geelong here. our senior flags in the SANFL still mean a great deal to us as it is our club that we saw win all those and then join the league after years of tomfoolery. maybe people who get upset with us claiming them as senior flags just don't understand that just because they are senior flags doesn't mean they are equal to AFL flags because they obviously are not, coming from the state competition.

i dont get some of your logic though, why would you suddenly not care about club achievements if you won the world cup? to some people club is more important than country.

and just for the sake of the thread, not sure if there are pictures of alberton in here but the trophies on display there is a sight to behold. senior trophies that is..! the one AFL cup is right at the entrance with the jumper we wore and other mementos like a picture frame in the same box.

I dont really want to get into debate about this stuff, and for sure you celebrate the port magpies premierships because they are the highest form of competition that they competed in, which is great and it depends on the person, but in time, im pretty confident port supporters would celebrate an AFL premiership more than a SANFL...in time. When you get down to it though, port power were a different club until the recent unification. So it was completely different, then.

I think that if you have only ever won C'Grade championships then thats hat you celebrate...but if a club wins A'Grade and C'Grade...then the A'Grade will be celebrated for longer and with more gusto, than the C'Grade, and the ckub will show it off more....local clubs do this all the time...3rds, Reserves and Seniors may all win a premiership in the same year, yet the seniors is the highest and most wildly celebrated. Not to say you dont show off the others, but there is more pride in the higher grade....hence why the world cup sits alone, proudly, at the top if the courosel.

To crow28...a big thankyou for them photos...much appreciated. Think i better saddle up and make the 2hr trp to get a photo with them.

Premiership cup

The cup was first introduced in 1959 by the VFL and, before this, the award was a pennant known by supporters simply as "The Flag". The AFL has since retrospectively awarded the premiers trophies based on the current design. Before the 1960s, premiership players received a personal premiership trophy instead of a medallion.

Correct - cup was introduced after one of the VFL executives (might have been Kenneth Luke ??) attended the FA Cup Final at Wembley and loved the pomp and ceremony of the cup presentation from the Queen.

Commissioned the making of the cup and the size and shape was based on the requirement that the cup could be seen from all corners of the vast MCG.

(Note: The now defunct pre-season Wizard Cup could be seen from space :D )

Also, whilst the AFL retrospectively 'awarded' the premiership cups for pre-1959 premiers, my understanding is that the clubs had to pay for them !!

I know that the suggestion of payment was put forward by the AFL but I think ultimately the AFL paid as the relevant Club Presidents rejected the proposal, but I am not 100% sure about that.

I know Brisbane paid for the Fitzroy cups, so there may have been a transition period where the cups were done by request and on the clubs' dime before they were then issued for all previous premierships.

From memory the AFL paid for one cup per club, any others that they wanted they had to pay for themselves.

So the Western Bulldogs got lucky then ;)

Interesting.

I wonder if the introduction of the Premiership cups in 1959 had anything to do with the president of the League at the time, K.G. Luke being the owner of a company that produced silverware?

Collingwood's first Premiership pennant won in 1896, their last year in the VFA was the subject of a dispute over who would pay for it. The VFA refused to pay for it as Collingwood was now no longer a member club, having decided to join the new League competition.

Has anyone seen the 1896 pennant? Does it exist?

Went to Torquay the other day, spent all day there and had a great time. Was driving back with someone to their place in Ballarat, they fell asleep in the passenger seat before even getting out of Torquay, and I was left to my own devices.

Driving back through Geelong, see the sign saying "Kardinia Park / Skilled Stadium / Geelong Cricket Ground, 2km" which made me chuckle. Because just in case you weren't QUITE certain, they chucked all three names on there.

Anyway, driving past about 11pm, thought it looked very nice in the nightlight, and what can I see from the road? Lit up like fairy lights, clearly visible, loudly and proudly, a window full of premiership cups. Bold as brass can be spotted from the road. Didn't quite have the energy to stop, but definitely will next time. It just stood out so well even from such a distance, I was shocked at how prominent it was.

I dunno who came up with this idea down at Geelong, but if I were a Geelong supporter I would be mighty proud of that display. Magnificent.

I always forget how huge the cups are up close.

Took a bunch of close-up photos of each cup (except the 3 earliest ones) but these are the only ones I got a chance to upload to Twitpic.

Can anyone give me some details about this Lions memorabilia area at Docklands?

Where exactly is it? Is it worth a visit?

I did google it but cant find much info online. Cheers in advance.

Have a look here for some info/photos.

Also this thread on Fitzroy's Bigfooty page contains many photos & a video of the museum.

It located in the corporate dining rooms, and is a permenant fixture. I was surprised at how big it actually was.

Hey guys, I have some questions in regard to the design of the current premiership cup.
As you may have seen, some of the pictures show certain cups with a wooden block underneath them, some don't. Could someone outline what determined what cups had the wooden block as well as the silver plaque that what screwed onto it. Judging from the cups I have seen, the plaque is either of the current VFL/AFL logo or the names of the premiership team.

Howdy just popping in with a bit of info.

Fred Stafford used to own the holiday house next door to the house I grew up in in Rosebud. Fred Stafford was the Carlton champ who kicked the winning goal in the 1947 GF which sunk the bombers by a point. He used to tell us about the glory days and one day showed us the memorabilia. Each Carlton player was awarded a pewter ashtray as reward for winning the GF as well as a poster with all the players names on it!

Different era. Sadly Fred passed away a few years back but his memory has certainly carried on with a few of us.

When I was little I had the opportunity to hold the 1991 premiership cup because they were cleaning the cabinet.

The nice lady cleaning the cabinet offered me the opportunity to hold the cup and, as I was a shy kid, I politely refused and just watched as my mad Hawk supporting mum held the cup proudly above her head.

It was the worse decision I ever made, football wise.

The "family club" of Hawthorn like to keep their trophies in a cabinet away from the prying eyes of their "family"?

I would have thought they would put at least some of them in the museum they have there at Waverley. That is surprising. poor effort Hawthorn. Carlton's used to be on display for the public...haven't checked for a while but it reminds me the last time we won a premiership was a long, long time ago. 1995. very sad.

Yes, it used to be in the social club in the bad old days

Once as a single guy i passed up on the offer to join the mile high club with a total stranger. A colleague of mine took her up on it

Port's just looks too cluttered, too busy, whatever else you can think of.

Takes the shine off the glory.

Room also looks like it belongs in an RSL or something.

Just my perspective guys.

If its still in their social club its quite refreshing

Its port adelaide football club not port adelaide profit conglomeration inc

Yeah, it stuffed up a great trivia question, one I used to win money on. That question being, "Which club has won the most number of premiership cups?". Most people would guess Collingwood, Carlton or Essendon, but the answer was Hawthorn. Then they awarded retrospective cups and ruined it :)
