ROUND 10: PRIDE ROUND

GOLD COAST VS ESSENDON

Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay

Friday November 3 @ 7.45pm AEDT

In Gold Coast and Essendon's first ever AFLW meeting, the teams will be effectively playing off for a place in the top four.

The loser, meanwhile, is a genuine chance to drop out of the top eight altogether.

Everything is on the line in Mackay.

That’s a way to bounce back.

The Bombers took advantage of the breeze in the first quarter, locking the ball in their attacking half and piling on 2.5 from their 10 inside 50s, with Essendon Co-Captain Bonnie Toogood wasting no time in bringing up her 50th career goal.

The Blues managed to stem the flow marginally with their turn with the wind, but just could not get a scoring shot away, while the Bombers stopped up the corridor, with a combined 19 combined tackles from Georgia Nanscawen and Brooke Walker paying dividends.

Meanwhile, Sophie Alexander marked her 50th game with a brilliant three-goal outing, living up to her nickname and forming a dangerous one-two punch with Toogood.

The game had careened out of Carlton's control in the first half, heading into half-time scoreless with a 30 point deficit, after struggling to maintain their structure around the ground. They could not getting their hands on the footy, no thanks to former Blue Maddy Prespakis, who starred alongside her new teammates with 28 touches and 7 clearances.

The Blues' struggles continued after the break, and such was Essendon’s dominance, Toogood alone had taken six forward-half marks by the opening minutes of the third quarter, before Carlton finally got their first score after the margin had blown out to a game-high 42 points in front of a bumper crowd at Windy Hill.

The Blues were eventually put out of their misery, suffering a crushing 32-point loss to their arch rivals.

CARLTON 0.0 0.0 1.3 3.7 (24)

Essendon has made one change for its side to take on Gold Coast in Pride Round.

Georgia Gee has been named for her return from a calf injury, with Ash Van Loon to make way.

Sophie Van De Heuvel has been named to line up for her 50th AFLW game.

A win for the Bombers would secure a maiden finals berth in just their second season in the competition.
INJURY LIST

Georgia Gee looms as a potential in for Friday night’s clash in Mackay with the midfielder listed as a test following a calf injury.

Head of Medical Services Megan Smith said Gee has progressed positively throughout the week and will be pushing for selection.

"Gee will train and has progressed positively from her calf strain and will most likely be available for selection".

The Bombers will reassess Co-Captain Steph Cain this week after the midfielder suffered a concussion in the second quarter of their clash with West Coast.

Cain has made positive steps towards making a return to the side.

Jacqui Vogt and Brooke Brown both made successful returns against Carlton from their respective injuries, making them available for selection against Gold Coast.

Both proved to be influential in what was an important win the Bomber’s final home game at Windy Hill for 2023.

It must be a throwback to the Flying Durtchman
I mean the nickname is fine, she gets Vander plenty (or SVDH), but all our Victorian games have had a proper full size banner. Club is being cheap

Last year our club bnf was on AFL draft night and this year our AGM is on AFLW draft night.

one club and all that…

How do we look? I've lived in Mackay. It can be super humid so hopefully they're ready for that.
Like we’re not able to dominate the midfield the way we would like, and Bonnie ain’t quite Bonnie today, thigh has been strapped since the first bounce and been defended pretty hard
