I watched the WC elimination final yesterday. God damn we were terrible. So many players, so few correct disposals.

I didn't notice the first time, or maybe I've tried to forget, But our 'General of Courage' Lindsay Thomas, wasn't too happy with what seemed like LA not going back after a shithouse kick over his head into the forward 50. Sent over a good set of Daggers.

Anyone else remember this?

But what I find Intriguing, is that you are right against the 'pussification' of the current Nmfc, yet when an example comes up of an onfield prime example of your theory, you choose to turn a blind eye.

I know the bloke gets it, and you can't do anything unless you have it, but it's moments like that one that will be the difference come next finals time.

Every replay I've watched over this offseason have been littered with errors made by Thomas & Anthony. I'd love to know what % of total team clangers these two register.

Anthony, Gibson, Thomas & MacMillan need to lift their DE% and hurt factor. It's one thing being mid paced and another being mid skilled, but if you combine that with mid courage, i'm not sure that is a trifecta of output we can continue to carry.

I agree with you.

LT is an average HFF. LA is a below average wingman.

On a clanger per possession basis though, LT would be in the "elite" category, despite his obvious improvements this year.

Yeh nah.

One of them is unpredictable and can crack open a game. The other one gets it lots (usually if someone else can dish it off though that did improve) and doesn't do all that much with it.

The clanger count is always higher for contested and creative players.

It can be a misleading stat. I don't take too much notice of it unless there is an extreme issue.

For a guy that is always out in the open he should really hurt teams more.

--Sorry for the lengthy post but had a theory about our season next year which turned out to be entirely true, a short summary is basically our biggest weakness last year was our contested footy, and we have two players Ziebell and Cunnington who could possibly turn this weakness into a strength off their own back this season --

Focusing on Ziebell and Cunnington makes me think that we could be in for a much better season then any of us suspect. Ziebell and Cunnington are both turning 22 and realistically this could be the year they both break out. Ziebell is going into his 5th year which is when mids traditionally break out, while based on his improved physique and GT% (as well as play) in the second half of last season Cunnington could break out this year as well.

So going into this season it seems most likely, that we will have a reliable centre clearance rotation featuring Swallow, Ziebell, Cunnington and Wells. This is the strongest it has been under Brad Scott and the first that you could say isn't "young", "weak" and hopefully this translate to them being able to hold their own and be the team that dominates instead of the other way around.

So based off this I looked at the stats for our 5 worst games of last year to see if the reason for us losing by so much was a severe deficit in the inside stats (Clearances and Contested Possessions). Now apart from the Sydney game which the stats indicate we lost because we couldn't handle the wet weather and butchered the ball all game there was definitely a correlation. For the other 4 games (West Coast x2, Hawthorn and Fremantle) we had 21% less Clearances and 11% less Contested Touches.

For a Side that's 2nd in the league for DE% and Uncontested Possessions.. 5th in I50.. 3rd in Goals Kicked and 1st in Goal Kicking accuracy it doesn't take much effort to realize where our weakness was last season.

For the three main inside stats; Tackles, Clearances and Contested Possessions we ranked 14th, 8th and 13th respectively. Now if Ziebell raises his GT% to 75% and Cunnington to 80% (which is very possible) we figure to do much better in the contested areas then we went last year.

It is being weak around the contests which imo has been our biggest weakness under Brad Scott and now there is a very high chance that 2013 is the year where that's no longer a weakness. So if we get big years out of Cunnington and Ziebell there is no reason to think we won't finish Top 4.
