Random thoughts not worthy of a thread (Part I)

Horace and I have been on a (losing) crusade to save the English language on here for many years. Favourite words besides their/they're/there include I/me/myself, its/it's and his/he's.

There's a thread on the subject about every second or third year.

You are so right Mr R. It is a losing battle and as recently as this morning I was tempted to remark on one of scooby's posts which had the "his" instead of "he's" in it, not once but twice. All in the space of a sentence or two.

But I thought better of it and contented myself with a quiet (or is that quite - another one of those abused words?) reflection that some things never change.

Nice to see that you are on board with our (losing) crusade RoOGrrrl.

I likes a good crusade, I do.

I think Scooby can be forgiven, for he brought us good tidings in the form of the Aaron Black re-signing leak.

The one that really kills me on BF is the use of 'bias' rather than 'biased'. As in 'I'm not being bias but...'

Argh. At least the misuse of 'laconic' has dwindled due to Lachie's stellar year.

Exactly. I mean, who in their right mind would want to be a line going diagonally across the grain of fabric. Pfft.

The lack of understanding of how to use the words bias and biased on BF continues to amaze me.

Agree with all of the above. Particularly the amazing inability of posters to distinguish between 'bias' and 'biased' and 'he's' and 'his'. There is a problem across this whole generation with the proper use of there/their/they're and your/you're but those other two seem to be particularly prevalent on BF

Had a laugh when twitter threw this one up earlier today.

I'm not being bias against Taz, but after reading this forum I can't help thinking we're only a poor facial expression or two away from seeing the latter word come back into vogue.

I guess this means we're old?

Found this in the Herald Sun online this morning. Yes, I know, the Hun having the nerve to criticize people's butchering of the English language. I lol'd.

One of my pet irritations is the word ''done''. I done this, they done that. Where did the ''did'' go?

Also, ''agreeance'' is, I suspect, a made up word that has found its way into dictionaries through common usage. What was wrong with ''agreement''?

Where and were too. Too and to. I could go on and on and ......

The word 'versing', as in Carlton are versing the dockers in Perth. Judd vs Pavlich in a verseoff, Eminem style but with words supplied by Byron?

****ing pokemon.

That's exactly what my nieces and nephew say! They don't quite get that just yet.

The shit farm in sebas is up to it's old tricks again. Some people do eat some weird things!

You must be mortified to read today that The Oxford Dictionary has named the word "selfie" as it's word of the year RoOGrrrl.
Really? 'Selfie'? That's truly awful. Whatever happened to interesting words, like 'serendipitously' and 'opprobrious' and 'conurbation' - there's a good one for you, T'toes; sounds vellicating, but is actually quite innocent.

Gen Y have a lot to answer for.

I think you'll find it's a "loosing" battle.

Not as much as that apostrophe Toe's.
It's a tricky one, it's/its. It catches me out occasionally. It looks as though it should be 'it's' because it's defining ownership of the word 'word'. But if you extend it out to its logical conclusion it means 'it is'. Which it's not.

Gotta hate it when people use the wrong there when they are talking about what has happened to somebody's family or pet.
Some of my facebook friends do this. (not you Twinkletoes) some others from my old secondary school do that.

For example on facebook you will see somebody's status "Today the kids are playing with there toys". When really the status should be "Today the kids are playing with their toys".
