GWS won without Hogan Green and Stringer plus Briggs was concussed early

No excuses

We can win this

Reminds me of the Sydney game last year where our two KPD’s were Draper and Davies who’d only played about 10 games combined.

At the time Sydney were top of the ladder and had won 10 games in a row. Nobody expected us to win and we did.

We have a good record against Geelong in recent times and haven’t lost at Kardinia Park in 7 years.

Good teams find ways to adapt and win these games. Surely we are a good team now right?

This is still a very winnable game. As you said, no excuses.

We are a good team - so are they. No excuses for anything other than a cracking game.

At least no one will be pretending like we're premiership contenders anymore.

It is like you have an opinion and want to be right for the sake of it.

We should still finish top 4. I didn't tip us this week and a 70 point loss is inexcusable.

If we finish top four we are a contender.

Great contribution.

Did you pick us to win today? Are you writing the season off due to this loss? Would you claim us as premiership favourites if we had a big win?

No I didn’t. I picked Geelong by 4-5 goals because we were missing Darcy, Bolton and Young.

We were much much worse than that

I’m largely writing off the season because we have no coherent game plan, we cannot move the ball in any coherent fashion, we are too easy to move the ball against from our forward line and the muppet coach keeps picking players who are obvious duds. Eg Reidy and Worner.

Nothing has changed…actually that’s not true…now we give up 150 points while also not being able to move the ball. Apart from 10 minutes from Murphy Reid, we’d be talking about a 100 point loss in round one.

Richmond played a better style of play playing a team full of kids.

Whole pre season to coach the team and we serve that shit up.

****ing disgrace

Not the correct thread but not an unreasonable summary.

In the history of afl/VFL football has a team ever lost a game by 78 points or more and won that seasons flag?
I doubt it

Memory tells me that Richmond got belted in 2017.

I am not saying there isn't an issue. I am saying that we should still be 3-3 at worst after 6 rounds and 4-2 is still a possibility.

When we are 3-3 or 4-2 will you change your opinion on our chances or will it be to early to tell?

I agree it was a disgrace. I agree we showed a lot of the same problems we have previously. I agree that selection was a disgrace. Someone should lose their job just based on selection as it was an issue last season as well.

And we should still expect to be 3-3 or 4-2 after six rounds. That lets us continue to improve through the season and build into a finals run.

It is a reasonable summary. I also think it is reasonable to not write off the whole year based on one game.

And if people don't want to read rational optimism, perhaps as you mention this isn't the thread for it. I will continue to be optimistic as it is more valuable than pessimism in every forum of life.

At 3QT I might have had some optimism. But that last quarter was north/richmond in 2024 areas - ie -absolutely horrific.
Alarm bells going off. Serious teams don’t ever fold like that

I agree - the last quarter was an embarrassing performance. After the first three goals I thought we would dig in and maybe lose by 25-30.

I am still optimistic for the year as a whole. Hopefully the loss creates an urgency to perform very well next week.

Given it’s the optimism thread, I’d say Reid is the obvious and it’s a really big positive.

Often times you draft kids that are honestly stragglers and you pump games into them hoping that one day they’ll eventually turn good.

But in the tier above that you have guys like Murphy Reid who clearly have class and footy nous from day dot and we’ve got him. Hopefully he can find a WA partner and settle in for the long haul. What a weapon to add.

His Dads response when he called him to tell him he was playing certainly didn’t make me think he was a flight risk.
