Rookie Draft Discussion Thread

So, in light of our mid-biased National Draft, is anyone changing their preferences for the Rookie Draft? I know I am.

If we're seriously looking at Jurrah, Hayes, and reclaiming Thoolen, it doesn't leave many options. Key defender seems to be the big standout as far as need goes, but a ruck would be nice (assuming Thoolen hasn't grown 5cm since being delisted).

Possible key defensive options - Comments from Inside Footy

Casey Sibosado
Oakleigh Chargers/Northern Territory
13/10/90 191cm 85kg
"Casey's a tall boy who originally hails from Broome but was boarding at Xavier College the past couple of years. He played National Championships footy for Northern Territory this year and did well. Plays predominately as a tall marking forward but could also play back. Kicked five goals against the Murray Bushrangers in round 19, which was easily his best game for the season. Very quick and a beautiful kick of the footy." - Stephen Conole

Tom Simpkin
Geelong Falcons
7/8/90 190cm 81kg
"He's the brother of Jonathan (formerly at Sydney) but is much taller and can play both in defence or on a wing. A strong draft chance because of his versatility. Played every game for Vic Country this year and did well. He's struggled with shin splints all year but there is a lot of development in him." - Michael Turner

Riley Milne
Murray Bushrangers
20/7/90 192cm 78kg
"Riley has played as a key defender for us but probably is best suited as a back pocket/half back flanker on the opposition's third tall forward. While he's six-foot-three he's very thin and doesn't have great body strength. He does provide great run and rebound off half back and has worked really hard at his spoiling and competing against his opponent. Had some trouble against Jack Watts in the nationals because he didn't make enough body contact but because he doesn't have a strong body he does a lot of things to avoid body contact. He's got some work to do but if he didn't get picked up I think he'd be a perfect rookie for someone. He's got a lot to offer." - Phil Bunn

Michael Gugliotta
Nightcliff, NT
26/6/90 194cm 82kg
"Michael was probably a prototype player for the AFL a couple of years ago when they put him in the AIS-AFL academy. I guess he's been a little slow to develop to his full potential and he's still got a lot of improvement left in him. He's a good size, very athletic and he's got really good closing speed. Performed well in the sprints and repeat sprints at the draft camp and he was also top 10 in the time trial. Any club that takes him will look for him to play wing and running half back with an eye to developing him into a key defender. He's someone who's got the pace and endurance to shut down the high-engine forwards down the track. Skills are OK and he's improved a lot in his contested ball. He might slip through the draft and go as a rookie where someone can put plenty of time into him." - Jarrod Chipperfield.

Matthew Martin
West Adelaide, SA
23/2/90 196cm 100kg
"Matty had a breakthrough year this season. He's a big strong lad who's got some pace and is a lovely kick of the footy over distance. Started the year in the under-19's but played senior footy toward the end of the year. He played all his junior footy as a forward but our senior coach wanted to make a full back out of him so he played him there and he ended up playing eight senior games at full back taking on some of the SANFL's best full forwards. Had a few goals kicked on him at times but really learned a lot from the experience. He's a promising player who maybe needs to learn to be a little more physical - he doesn't realise how strong he is just yet." - Simon Hughes

Hamish Shepheard
East Perth
28/10/90 195cm 80kg
"He played for WA in the under 18 carnival this year and did OK. Is a versatile key position player who has very good agility for someone of his size. Kicked seven goals in one Colts game this year to underline his prowess up forward. Versatility is probably his greatest asset." - Mark Winnett

Ben Birthisel
Murray Bushrangers
18/8/90 191cm 87kg
"Ben played full back for us most of the year and he's a big, strong, athletic kid who kicks the ball a mile. He's created some interest from AFL clubs and while he hasn't been talked about as being draftable, someone might take him as a rookie." - Phil Bunn

Steven Gaertner
Dandenong Stingrays
2/1/90 198cm 88kg
"Steven's a quick rebounding defender who had a really good season for us. He went to draft camp last year but didn't get picked up as a 17-year-old. He got a kick in the bum early in the year when he didn't get selected for state team after training with the squad. Put some good games together and got back into the Vic Metro team so that was a credit to him. I really thought he developed as the year unfolded playing half back and centre half back. His speed for that size is unmatched at TAC Cup level, I reckon." - Graeme Yeats

Zach Sengstock
Sandringham Dragons
31/7/89 191cm 85kg
"He is the son of former Australian basketball representative Larry. He was one of our 19-year-olds who played in a premiership for Caulfield last year, he plays in a band, he makes films, takes his guitar to draft camp - a different sort of kid but very likeable and very popular among the playing group. His marking is his strength and he's very athletic. He appears to be bigger than he is. Listed at 191cm but you'd swear he's 194 or 195, but in saying that he looks more of a flanker than key position and that will depend on how he comes on. I think he was the best mark in the TAC Cup." - Wayne Oswald

Any thoughts on these guys? I'm guessing that we'd be looking for an athletic project given we passed up on Jordan Lisle in the third round...

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

dont be surprised if Thoolen gets rookied.

That would be a strange move for mine. If we're sufficiently underwhelmed by him to delist him after only one year on our list, I don't see why we'd then rookie him.

If there are any tall defender options (who we rate) in the draft, we should have a go at them. Gugliotta, Hayes, Sibosado might all be options.

Will Young was drafted, Sampler. Sibosado and Gugliotta probably sound the most appealing. Sibosado is listed as being a little taller in some of the stats I've seen.

I say Hayes will be a Big Chance because remember he played in the VFL for us in the last round.

Ah, thanks. Keeping up with the board has meant that I haven't kept up with all the players taken, I'll edit accordingly. ;)

Agree that Sibosado and Gugliotta are probably the most interesting from our perspective, but I think in the 15 or so PSD/rookie selections before our first, Sibosado will be gone. Googs could well be there for us.

There must be something seriously wrong with DeBoer.
Two years in row now he has been overlooked.

I would have said Rookie him, but I'm not so sure now.

I agree with TRS Milne could be a good get and I like the sound of Gaertner

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Weren't we interested in Mangan as the draft was nearing?

The depth of this year's draft and our respectable track record with rookie selections makes me almost as excited about the upcoming rookie draft as I was with the national draft.

With four selections, I'd be happy if we landed two key position prospects and another two midfield prospects. Another possibility would be Jurrah if he was comfortable and confident of making the transition down to Melbourne.

I don't see the point in using a rookie selection on Thoolen at this stage. He just didn't look a likely type from what I witnessed at VFL level.

People said he did not Nominate and Will be in the 2009 Draft

Looking at that video of Bock, he can seriously play!

I wouldn't mind snagging him in the rookie draft in the least, assuming we believe he can put the necessary weight on. Fantastic video as Manson's Haircut says. :thumbsu:

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

I have no idea who we're interested in, but if I was to name four players I'd be happy with, and would address our needs;

Michael Gugliotta
Chris Bock
Patrick Hayes
Liam Jurrah

in addition to:

Lachlan Keefe
Scott Reed, and
Kevin Dyas :thumbsu:

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Just in case anyone out there doesn't understand the difference between the National Draft and the Rookie Draft, could someone please explain.

Some might think that they're all 'rookies', but the word clearly has some particular meaning.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Sibosado goes fairly early, particularly given that Adelaide were thought to be very keen in the ND. (Mind you, Adelaide have recruited so tall that they may have their quota already.)

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

The National Draft is for players born on or before 30/04/91.

The Rookie Draft is for players not taken in the National Draft who were born on or before 31/12/90.

Why duplicate the worK? If they're eligible, why not process them all at the same time? Or is it a matter of drawing out the interest over the long, dull summer?

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Gugliotta replace presti with another defender with an almost inprononcable italian name:thumbsu:

Rookies also get paid less, and can't play in the seniors without there being a long-term injury. Clubs tend to use the rookie list for players who need additional development, are considered a risk in terms of application, or in our case, aren't from Victoria. :p

Basically the National Draft is for all players over a certain age eligible.

The rookie draft ups the age limit so that those bottom aged players that get overlooked one year, have another crack at the National Draft the next year after another year of development at home before they try their hand at the Rookie draft.

That's a fair point. I wonder when "revised" permission to train lists are lodged with those missing out on the National Draft added to the group?

I believe the Pre-Season Draft is currently;
1. Melbourne
2. Port Adelaide (Carr)
3. Essendon
4. Carlton (C. Johnson)
5. Brisbane
6. Richmond

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

Hoping for either De Boer or Gugliotta as two of our picks in the rookie draft. We have had luck with interstate rookies and the fact they are from WA and NT respectively bodes well.

Liam Jurrah is another that we should look at. What about Gaertner as a project tall also?

Think we should also look at another ruck prospect. Are there any decent ones worth having a look at?

So with four picks hope we go:
De Boer
Gugliotta
Jurrah
Gaertner/Ruck prospect

But knowing Hine he will probably take players that we have never heard of. Had anyone heard of Luke Casey-Leigh prior to us taking him last year?

Re: Rookie Draft Next Week Picks?

I don't think alot of people realise how important this Rookie Draft is.

This years talent pool is one of the deepest in recent history and with players like De Boer, Rockliff, Allwright etc. stikll available we are bound to pick a up a few good kids.

I think hine should just aim for the best available, keeping in mind our needs. but as its a Rookie Draft, just go on the best talent.

BTW what day and time is it on???

love the sound of this kid, if he really is quick then I hope we have a good look at him. we need a strong quick big boy for full back I reckon, N.Brown is more suited to CHB where he can really damage with his long lethal kicking.

Mods there appears to be two Rookie discussion threads going at the moment on the front page you may want to merge them?
