Last Game

Collingwood: The Pies had their second successive tight win against a bottom 4 opponent, getting over the top of Adelaide in the last quarter. Favourite for the Rising Star Josh Daicos had 40 disposals and 3 goals coming off half back, making a mockery of being merely 19, whilst last season's mid season draftee Ash Johnson kicked 2 goals in an impressive AFL debut.

Essendon: The Bombers lead Gold Coast from start to finish to cruise to a 48 point win, but poor kicking for goal prevented a much bigger win for the Bombers. Zach Merrett was as influential as ever with 36 disposals, 8 marks and 9 clearances for the midfielder, whilst medium forward Jake Stringer kicked 4 goals amongst his 16 disposals, whilst Mason Redman returned to deliver 26 disposals off half back.

Head to Head (last 5)

Collingwood defence vs Essendon forward line

So far Essendon have kicked a goal 21.83% of the time it enters their forward 50, 15th in the AFL. Collingwood concede a goal 23.11% of the time it enters their defensive 50 on the other hand, 11th in the AFL as things stand. Peter Wright has enjoyed a career best year, kicking 42 goals in 17 games so far, and has averaged 3 goals a game against the Pies since moving to Essendon, and will probably get attention from Darcy Moore, who has recovered remarkably quickly from a knee injury. Jake Stringer has been mercurialfor the Dons as ever but has still only 18 goals this year and will need to be on top of his game to get on top of Collingwood's Brayden Maynard.

Midfield/rucks battle

Collingwood are 14th for contested possession difference this year and 16th for clearance difference whilst Essendon are 12th for both of these stats. On the inside, Essendon might send Jye Caldwell to the evergreen Scott Pendlebury, who regularly touches the Bombers up, whilst Dylan Shiel, Zach Merrett and Ben Hobbs will try to work their magic on the inside, whilst their likely head to head match ups will be the likes of Jack Crisp, Patrick Lipinski and Taylor Adams, all of whom are having a strong year for the Pies. On the outside, watch Sam Durham go to work for the Dons up against Trent Bianco most likely, whilst captain Dyson Heppell will go up against Nick Daicos, most likely on the fatside wing for the pair. Rucks wise, both teams use two with both resting forward but we should expect Sam Draper to be a big influence against Darcy Cameron.

Collingwood forward line vs Essendon defence

Collingwood have kicked a goal 22.25% of the time it enters their forward 50, currently 13th in the AFL. Essendon's defence has been very leaky, conceding a goal 25.82% of the time it enters defensive 50, which is 17th in the AFL currently. The ever consistent Brodie Mihocek has been the main man for Collingwood inside 50 this year, kicking the 32 goals so far and enjoys playing his father's old club, averaging 2 goals a game against the Dons and had 4 in his last start, and will be looking to do the same against his likely opponent in Jayden Laverde. Jake Kelly will be looking to quell ANZAC Day match winner Jack Ginnivan, who has 29 goals so far.

X-Factor Player

Beau McCreery has attracted some criticism around but he's been great so far for the Pies, watch for him to try to play strongly against the Bombers.

Key stat

Collingwood: Clearances. Of the Bombers 6 wins, only 1 have they trailed in clearances, so it's very important for the Pies to win this area of the ground.

Essendon: Goals/Inside 50. Really need to punish the lack of size in defence for that Pies

Perkins for Snelling the only change provided that everyone else is fit.

Collingwood are on an impressive 8 game winning streak, but they've struggled through most of those games. Only just beat North, Adelaide, Carlton and Gold Coast.

It'll be difficult to win, but I think we match up well vs Collingwood.

This is a really good opportunity for us to show genuine improvement. We did ok on Anzac Day and Pies accurate kicking got them over the line. We are playing pretty well and important to back up all the good work with another strong showing.

Can someone just take out that slimey Ginnivan diver.

Potential outs for mine, assuming Perkins is fit: Snelling (form), Phillips (structure), Hobbs (rest/shoulder injury). Jones played a little better yesterday and is important as a chop out to 2MP, but he needs to start getting more than 8 touches a game.

We're not getting a top 3 pick anymore so lets go for it.

Bombers played fun to watch footy against the Suns, but they need to tone it down a touch and be a little more sensible to take advantage of time in possession and inside 50 disparity like that.

Bring that energy, but a touch more maturity, and bombers win ... comfortably.

On form I think we should be winning this. They’ve been floundering for weeks & are lucky they’ve had some ordinary opposition to get out of jail. They’ll need to lift significantly to beat us.

Just a bit degrading to call that lady in the US and the other one in Bali "ordinary opposition"

We got a little cute when in possession yesterday - A couple of kicks across the ground (Snelling?), overplaying handball and short passes in back half. Pies pressure will be greater than Suns' and we will be punished if we're as loose in possession as we were yesterday.

Definitely have a shot. Pies usually raise their game against us so it will be interesting to see if we can stand up and toss a spanner into the pies' finals push.

should be a good game! thinking Snelling takes a break - maybe worth tagging N Daicos.
