ESSENDON BOMBERS

There's not much to say about that game, really.
The Crows are on another level. That's it, basically. We tried hard, pushed them, and even had the lead for a little bit.
Infuriating and frustrating umpiring decisions once again plagued the match, but didn't decide the outcome; we did that ourselves by once again forgetting how to defend for the last 5 minutes of a quarter. Every quarter.
Again.
Andrew McGrath continued his ******* incredible debut season with a fantastic display against superstar Eddie Betts, keeping him goalless and to only 7 disposals all game. This kid is something seriously special.
Marty Gleeson continued to impress this year, with a great aerial game.
Cale Hooker decided that shots from inside 50 are overrated, and as such, just booted the friggin things from outside the arc.
Zaharakis' pressure game lifted once more with 8 tackles and 26 disposals. A seriously underrated player.
Joey booted 3 in quick succession and then committed the cardinal sin; be an Essendon player and have fun. Can't ******* believe that this s**t is still spoken about. Pathetic.
Ben Howlett was charged the same amount at the MRP as Ollie Wines. Let that sink in, because I'll talk about that one in the rant below.
Pannell is a ******* idiot.
Hurley is just great. Only problem? He's working more into the midfield now, which is cool, but he often finds himself letting his direct opponent go.
Leuenberger actually had a solid game. Runs like a baby giraffe, but had a solid game.
Dropping Hartley was ******* stupid. Jenkins killed us.
Jake Lever would look real nice in an Essendon jumper.
Jobe's goal made my heart happy.

GOLD COAST SUNS

Launched out of the blocks at an amazing pace, holding a 21 point lead at quarter time against their home state rivals.
The Suns' first quarter showed us that they can really make an impact when they're on, beating the Lions in clearances, contested possessions, and tackles in the first stanza.
This loss concluded a rough week for the Suns after sacking Rocket Eade, and losing superstars Tom Lynch, Pearce Hanley, and the son of God himself, Gary Ablett Jr.
It gave the interim Suns coach, former Bomber hard man Dean Solomon, the chance to show the sort of aggressive and attacking edge that he was known for as a player in his coaching style. It worked for about half an hour.
Touk Miller and David Swallow dominated the clearances, gathering 29 and 30 disposals respectively.
Jack Martin was fantastic close to goal, kicking three in the space of five minutes. If he had kicked straight, he could have easily ended up with 7 or 8.
The Suns also lost young gun Sean Lemmens with a serious ankle injury.
The Suns coach does know that his team falls away easily, and he knows that they need to work on that. With two rounds left, the Suns are no chance to make the finals, but Solly knows that he can press his claim for a senior coaching gig by making his young charges push their remaining two opponents.

Solid ins, solid outs, and a ridiculous 12 changes across the two teams for this match. Essendon vice-captain Zach Merrett has been named after serving one match on the sidelines for being a *******. Evergreen defender Mark Baguley also returns after being rested last week against the Crows, with Tom Bellchambers returning after spending last week resting a troublesome foot. Michael Hartley's omission last week was a genuine failure, so it's great to see him back in this week. In amazing news for us ever-patient Essendon fans, the big fridge, Josh Begley, is FINALLY getting a run after being a seriously solid contributor in the VFL all season. Remember when he kicked four goals against the Suns in the JLT Community NAB Ansett Wizard Cup Challenge? Wouldn't mind that again. Making way this week are Matt Dea (Who could be considered a little stiff), alongside Ben Howlett and Travis Colyer. Trav hasn't been named in the VFL either, which means that he's really copping a rest. It's desperately needed. He's looked horrible for the majority of the year, and he does need some time away. Matthew Leuenberger has copped a minor ankle injury, while the big bear Michael Hurley has been left out of the team with a grade 1 calf injury. He should be back next week, along with the retiring gun, Jobe Watson.

The Suns' injury issues have been well documented, and they continue this week with Daniel Currie, Sean Lemmens, and Jarryd Lyons having to sit out with injury. Joining them are Jack Bowes, Jack Scrimshaw, and Alex Sexton, who have all been omitted. Into the lineup are ruckman Keegan Brooksby, italian Stallion Brayden Fiorini, veteran Irishman Pearce Hanley, Jack Leslie, Jesse Lonergan, and Mitch Hallahan.

ESSENDON BOMBERS - #47 - JAMES KELLY

A proper gentleman of the game, one of the smartest men to have ever graced the AFL, and, in our greatest time of need, the hero of the Essendon Football Club. Pops Kelly announced his retirement this week, after two years with our great club. The sheer fact that he came to us, the club he grew up supporting, when we were in our darkest hour, is one of the most incredible and selfless gestures that one could display. His smarts, strength, and sheer football knowledge has been an incredible asset to our club over the past two years, and though he might be remembered as a Geelong legend with three premierships, he will always have a lasting legacy at the Essendon Football Club. There isn't a single Essendon person who wouldn't sing the praises of Pops over his time here. His teachings to our young defenders in Andrew McGrath, Martin Gleeson, and Conor McKenna will ensure that our defensive efforts across half back remain strong for years to come. The amount that he has done for our club in such a small amount of time will never be able to be measured.

Thank you, Pops.

ESSENDON BOMBERS - #16 - JOSH BEGLEY

I really don't have much to say about this one except for, "It's about ******* time".

He's been an emergency 86 times in 20 games, and we've all begged Woosha to debut him. Looks like he's finally taken his fingers out of his ears. Yeeewwww.

GOLD COAST SUNS - #4 - JACK MARTIN

After overcoming two seasons cruelled by injury, the 22 year old Gold Coast gun has become a mainstay in the Suns team, both off half back and in the midfield. Arguably the most versatile player in the Gold Coast roster, Martin can play anywhere on the ground and have an influence. His speed and precision through the middle of the ground and inside 50 is one of the Suns' most potent weapons, and the Bombers need to be super wary of letting him off the leash.

GOLD COAST SUNS - #17 - STEVEN MAY

Good captain.
Good defender.
Good leader.

s**t bloke. Watch him punch Joe in the back of the head 4-5 times a quarter.

Game's ******. - 17/8/17

The game is dying.

Sure, call me dramatic, but it's true. The game as we know it, the tough, hard, physical game that we know as Australian Rules is being smashed to smithereens by a minority. Yes, we understand that the head is sacrosanct. We understand that players welfare needs to be protected. Now, when the umpires in games start to make the rules up because they want to appear in the same boat as the horrendously confusing Match Review Panel. Last week, Benny Howlett performed a perfect tackle. One arm pinned, the other free. His opponent dropped the ball and was brought to ground. Walla picked the ball up, ran closer to goal, and slotted it, bringing the Essendon crowd to the forefront. We were going nuts. But there was this loud, high pitched noise reverberating around the stadium. Oh, it's the umpire. Must be bringing back the free kick for Ben Howlett, that's okay. He'll just pop it back inside fifty and th- oh what the ****. For those watching at home, you'd have heard Pannell's justification for his decision. "You could have hurt him".

You heard it here first folks. Next time you're driving your car at 48kmh on a 50 kmh zone, and the cops pull you over and give you a ticket because you "might have veered off the road into a kindergarten", you had better just deal with it.

To rub salt in the wounds, look at Ollie Wines. Lined his opponent right up, copped him flush in the head with charging arm and elbow, and it looked like he was absolutely gone. Cooked. Off to the glue factory. Nope. $1000 fine. The exact same as what Benny Howlett got for the tackling incident. A real, legitimate, totally legal tackle received the same rule and punishment as a dirty elbow to the head did.

Give the game back to the people, AFL. Give it back to those who line your pockets. The silent majority have had enough of this garbage officiating, the over-lenience with certain teams, players, and punishments, and the useless way that the game is being run.

The bump is dead, and the tackle is looking like it will soon follow suit.

It's disgusting, it's deplorable, and the simple fact that that happened over the past week has almost got me to the point where I almost don't give a s**t what happens this week.

Almost.

This is a game we really shouldn't be losing. The young Suns are depleted, their founding captain and talisman is selling his mansion, and the whole 2017 campaign has been an utter disaster. The players may try hard in this game, but at the end of the day, the Bombers should outclass them comprehensively, as they surge towards a finals showing with one game left in the home and away season. Here comes an outlandish tip, because why the hell not.

Essendon by 106.

We need to start well in this game. If they get a sniff and start playing above their ability like every other bottom side has done, it will be a painful night.

Let's start playing like a finals team again.

At the stadium. Please don't Essington this Bombers.

Hoping to see a clinical, methodical, merciless destruction of the opposition tonight.
Lets look to win every quarter and further our lead at each break.
Time to draw a line in the sand and bury this Essington mindset and really seize this opportunity.
