Coconut is a very disparaging term used among the indigenous community that essentially devalues one's Aboriginality when they're seen to act more like a 'white' person. (The coconut reference coming from being perceived as 'black on the outside, white inside' ). Aboriginal cops get it a lot up north when enforcing the law in indigenous communities.

Having seen many truly messed up and ignorant social media comments, I would genuinely hate to imagine what the bottom feeders of society actually replied to that insta story. There would be some truly dark stuff in his DMs and I am not surprised he may need a bit of time to get his mind right after it all.

I hate the hashtag as much as the rest of us, but a shitload of people probably just confirmed his worldview in an emphatic manner.

That may have been the case once upon a time but we are not in that space right now. I don't like having this inference that were a racist club and always will be. We need to clear our name because it will stop indigenous players from wanting to come over. I'd be getting Impey and Amon to reach out to Willie if possible as they can disapprove the general consensus amongst the Rioli family that we are a bunch of rednecks. It won't change the past but it can improve things in the future.

Sounds like he's still very much grieving after his Dad's passing, so of course one has to factor that in for what was a scathing, out-of-line post. Whatever one's view may be, he doesn't like how Hawthorn treated two of his closest family members, so one has to have empathy for that. None of us would either if we we were in his shoes.

I'm sure his Dad's stories from Hawthorn weren't overly positive (Though it was bullshit Tom Morris bringing Dunstall's legend inductee speech into it). But one interesting insight is from filmmaker and ex-RRR breakfaster Tony Wilson (son of premiership player, Ray) who captained Hawks Under 19s: "I was captain, and remember one afternoon at Arden Street, having to ask some of our players to stop racially abusing North Melbourne’s Indigenous players, 'because everything you say to them, you’re saying to Willie too'. So leaves you with mixed views, one racism was sadly rife in the game, but two at least there were some good dudes calling it out.

Hi, this is my first post. I lurk around in threads regularly. I think that we as a club need to clear our name not because it will stop Indigenous players from coming to the club but because we as a club, former players and members have made some poor decisions in the past. This is something the club seems to be working on and I am glad that we are. I hope that Aboriginal players want to come to Hawthorn and feel welcome at the club but I do not think that getting Aboriginal recruits should be pur intention when it comes to meaningful reconciliation and learning from past mistakes.

I got to hold 1989 while Mrs Cyrilsays held 1971 and the kids held 2008, 2013 and 2015.

Memorable. And the team on hand to facilitate could not have been more awesome!
