Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

So the Bailey Smith situation again? Haha

Yes 100% the same situation, well as long as you ignore that:
  • one player was not contracted, was coming back after a season ending injury and had mental health issues
  • and the other is contracted for 2 more years (on a heavily fronted ended contract - so the club he is already at gets him on the heap for those 2 years)

I have zero interest in reading this entire thread, but I would've assumed that its Geelong's first and its done. Are people seriously debating that?

Absolutely

+Value on field (CHF/Ruck), top 100 player in the AFL, pushing top 50
+Attractive salary (front loaded - a euphemism for pre-paid)
+Currently contracted (2 years to run)

= greater than a mid 20's draft pick in a below average draft year.

We'll throw in the latest fleecey tees from the Scratch Project range to get it over the line

Really don’t get the hoo-ha in this thread. Either Geelong trade us what we consider adequate value for a contracted, required player or we keep him. As of now we don’t know for sure what is considered “adequate” value so there seems little point arguing the issue.

Can I interest you in checking out the Liam Ryan thread for how that works out for you

Firstly and most importantly, Stk are now in lockstep with NWM’s deal to compete for a flag.

To win a flag in the next two seasons, we will need to defeat Geelong.

It will be much more difficult to defeat Geelong if we do you an enormous favour and fill your seemingly last remaining list gap.

Second, Marshall is contracted and it’s now common knowledge he has been heavily front ended and is on let’s say 1/2 rate ~ 450-500k but could easily be less. This is therefore an integral part of our strategy to retain him on lower salary.

So in my mind there’s no world where we release him from his contract.

Having said that, what would make us move? Well, Geelong would have to be significantly worse off in 2-3 years or we would need to be significantly better right away.

Does Geelong’s P17 this year meet that? No.

What about P17 + F1 (say P17)? Well, no but obviously closer. Still not making you bad enough off when we’ll need to beat you and us better off right away.

Okay, here are the options in order of our preference.

1. No trade.

2. Max Holmes

3. 2025 P17 + 2026 F1 (17) + 2027 F1 (17)

Holmes adequately makes you worse and us better.

Three late firsts probably makes you worse off enough when we’re competing for a shot at it. Same as what you paid for an uncontracted Cameron and what you demanded for a contracted Tim Kelly so laugh away if you want but we set the terms.

Anything else is an absolute waste of breath.
Lmfao at 3 years of firsts

Well my club is on the other side of the deal there so obviously the opposite applies. Basic BigFooty logic needed here.

What an intriguing read this is
Geelong supporters desperately want Roma, and for nothing because they are doing St Kilda a favour taking him
But their counter to a decent argument from St Kilda supporters is that he isn’t that good and ruckman are overrated.
Brilliant 👍🏼

We are not saying we as supporters overrate rucks we are telling you what our coach and our recruiters think based on their past decisions with rucks which is pretty obvious. Im not sure why you are being so dense about it.

Saints fans: "Cats are the ones targeting one of our players, so they need to pay up to get the deal done!!"

Also Saints fans: "Liam Ryan already has one foot out the door, so West Coast need to take our minimum chips or nothing!!"

Saints can play hardball but it genuinely wouldn’t surprise me if Geelong walked away from unrealistic requests from the Saints. Cats will get Kolo back next year and his spot is backline. SDK or Blitz moves to the ruck or Stanley goes around again. Edwards will likely be ready in two years time (ideally Loch Ness but not looking great for him).

It would be nice to get Marshall but not at any cost. Saints have created the situation by bringing in TDK, great for Tom, terrible for Marshall.

So cringey.

Marshall is 30. Saints got good service from him.

If he wants to go let him go and if he wants to stay he can stay.

Saints need the salary cap space anyway.

They wanted TDK.

This hard bargain crap is so cringey.

Why are you so obsessed with making us out to be the bad guys in every situation? How is it our fault that we want a decent return for a contracted player?

We still have plenty of cash.
Only paying 83% of the cap according to Wilson
Are you able to explain that to me?

Isn't there a TPP floor?

Every club will have spare money because the TPP is going up 15%.

So technically all teams can say they are paying under 85%.

Saints in the same situation as everyone else

Every stkilda related thread.

There you are sprouting misinformation.

His deal has not much left owing. Confirmed again on today’s tradies.

Trading Marshall does ZERO for the salary cap as he is a cap friendly deal

Our total 2025 payments equaled 83% of this years cap and that includes Crouch’s final season and the final season payout for Billings to play at Melbourne.

We forward paid the cap 12% to meet the salary floor.

I've seen it. Really not seeing the relevance here mate
But when it’s Ryan saints fans kick up a fuss that we’re being unreasonable. If Marshall wants to go Geelong you won’t get in his way and you’ll give him up for pennies, that’s the Ryan to Saints logic being spouted over there.

One’s had a gutful of the club he is at and has requested a trade.

The other one hasn’t said anything yet ?.

Cats usually get players who are nominating them to hold off announcing until after their Finals campaign is finished.
Been a staple of the way they do things.

That's why they were filthy when GWS announced Jez was leaving (without Jez's approval) right before Geelong played Richmond in the 2020 Grand Final. GWS were salty and made sure to time it right before the game.

Last year Cats got Baz to wait until after the season had finished.

IF (and that's IF) Rowan is putting in an official trade request this year we probably won't hear about it until the season is well and truly done. Which means this thread can probably be locked until then.

That’s only been the case for a couple of days. For 2 weeks it was nothing but heresay and that didn’t stop anyone. Marshall has wanted out multiple times and now he’s being replaced by an inferior player, if he wants out I wouldn’t blame him and Geelongs first would get it done.
