people are allowed to question whatever they like, for the millionth time a supression order is about the publication NOTHING to do with whether or not people talk about it and the media are not going to anyway

Listing as a fake finger injury thats just TBC is drawing more attention to it than not listing him
I am genuinely interested on what you believe would be the best case for Geelong to have done?

I am sure others have posted this, but these are the 4 main outcomes I can see:

Option 1: Player X fake injury
Response: big footy posters with tin foil hats on make a thread (myself included), general public don't really care.

Option 2: Player X can't play due to personal reasons
Response: Speculation for personal reasons, fans offering support to player, comments online, media speculation, reported in media

Option 3: Player X not picked for AFL/VFL for 4 weeks
Response: Fans, media etc speculating and asking questions, reported in media

Option 4: Player X is unavailable due to being charged for rape allegations
Response: Broken suppression order

Keeping in mind GFC need to keep a neutral position, they can't deem him guilty and present him negatively, they also can't assume he is innocent and present him positively. GFC needed an outcome that if charges are dropped his reputation is not tarnished and if they go to trial the court case is not affected.

why is this such a point of contention for you? I understand being appalled at what he has been accused of doing but why are you so hung up on how the AFL has handled the suppression order? Do you even care about the victim or is this just an opportunity for you to point-score against the AFL and Geelong?

edit: just checked and you have 65!! posts in this thread all asking the same question
It seems pretty obvious that it is this

It goes to the heart of Geelong being extremely flexible with the truth regarding its injury reporting. Just say personal matters.

Yes. Because a Geelong player mysteriously missing for weeks / months after a rape case is filed wouldn’t raise any eyebrows at all.

The only thing Geelong could do is slap a fake injury up, or embellish a legit injury in terms of timeline to return. There really was no other option that wouldn’t have immediately made everyone draw conclusions that the player was the person in question.

Yes, because the burden of proof is so high that they can't get to court. That it has a court hearing is serious indeed.

That's not exactly accurate. Plenty of these offences have enough to go to committal hearing but not enough for juries to convict. Very different burden of proof level.

this is the greatest fallacy ever, you can still be tried without a jury and numerous cases have been

That's not a regular occurrence in Victoria.

Geez I wonder what happened to innocent until proven guilty. When it comes to these sort of accusations the names of the parties involved should be suppressed until the case has been decided as even if the accused is found to be innocent there's still lingering stigma attached that can have damaging on-going repercussions in the professional and personal lives of the accused. I know that there's those lefty white knights who think every woman walking on earth is incapable of lying but spitefulness is part of the human condition and there are plenty of vindictive strumpets out there who don't have any problem stooping that low to get even for whatever slight they think they've suffered from a guy.

The names have been suppressed and almost everyone in here - including the lefties - are in favour. You’ve just come in half ****ing baked here

I think Geelong have done the right thing behind closed doors but can’t do anything till this suppression order is over.. Geelong have a link on their website to every single players Instagram in their bio and there is one player who doesn’t have a link to their instagram we can all guess who. I think Geelong is doing all the can with the player with the cards they have been dealt and are doing what they can and can’t do by lawyers

I've read several posts already that have more or less strongly hinted at who it is, doesn't take a rocket surgeon to work it out, and constantly whinging and crying as to why his name can't be out there in the open like accused regular men who don't have a celebrity profile. With one Geelong hating Saint fan blatantly posting his name. * smh *

They hide behind it being some kind of nuanced commentary on the charmed life of a celebrity but in reality this is 100% about missing out on the opportunity to openly troll your club on the internet.

They see the silver lining in the potential that a girl has been assaulted, and it’s the chance to get stuck into Geelong FC on BF…but they can’t openly do that…and it’s so unfair! :'(

‘Whyyyy are they lying about an injury!? Why can’t we just celebrate his arrest and say nasty things about his club????’

Agree their hands are tied in terms of public comment. I am interested to know whether he’s training and still doing official duties or been stood down behind closed doors? I’d be disappointed if the former.

It may also just be that if it goes public, it will really hurt the chances of getting an impartial jury who are unaware of the player's history as it might pertain to the case, due to the massive amount of press it will get.

Most people won't know Mr Sinnott from a bar of soap, even after his name has been published. If the footballer's name goes public, within the week, almost everyone in Geelong will know who he is and a lot of other facts that they may need to keep from the jury.
True in many ways.
But having a public profile is normally not enough on its own for a suppression order. There usually has to be other reasons that are coupled with that profile for a suppression order to be granted.
At the end of the day, the suppression order has been put in place because it’s deemed necessary for justice to not only be done, but to be seen to done. Which is all we can ask.
