Rumoured $4 million offer from Greater Western Sydney is denied by Sam Mitchell

HAWTHORN champ Sam Mitchell has dismissed suggestions that he has been offered a multi-million-dollar deal by Greater Western Sydney.

Mitchell said he had heard the rumours, but he's contracted to the Hawks for next year with an option for 2013.

Even as late as Friday night, Garry Lyon suggested on Triple M that the Giants might try to tempt Mitchell with a $4 million, five-year deal, with the sweetener to the Hawks being the offer of exciting 17-year-old West Australian midfielder Jaeger O'Meara.

Jags O'Meara for a guy with a few seasons left and will not be near his prime when they're ready to contend?

That rumor further fuels the speculation that GWS is nothing but a rudderless ship.

A guy who will captain the club with claims to being the best midfielder in the league this season for a guy they're not going to get their hands on anyway.

Might be a year or two older than would be ideal but a hard bodied, genuinely good midfielder like Mitchell is exactly the sort of player they'd want in their formative years.

Certainly beats an offer of Russell and our first round pick, I would have thought.

Can't see Mitchell going anywhere so it really is a pointless argument either way.

4 MILLION is a nice little offer for a bloke who's best is behind him. His work rate really picked up this year. Coincidence??? Impressinga new empoyer???

Why aren't they going to get Jags? Do they absolutely have to trade that pick? They cannot keep that pick?

There are a group of players who have birthdays between 1st Jan and 30th April and are too young to be drafted this year. About 18 nominated and GWS have to trade up to 4 of them either this year or next. GWS cannot draft these players themselves so the other clubs will put in offers of players/draft picks to go into a "mini" draft. GWS can accept 4 offers and list them in order of 1 to 4. The club who offered the best will get pick 1 and will pick which of these players they want. The ones that dont get selected will then just go into the National Draft when they are old enough.
GWS can also run the risk of wanting too much so it could backfire if no club puts a bid in, so effectively these players will then go into the draft later on and can be picked up by any club.
Because of the ages i am pretty sure that they cannot go on an AFL list until they are old enough in 2 years time, but i may be wrong here.

Thanks B&S and special thanks to Keyza for the detailed explanation. I knew there was a "mini draft" but wasn't entirely sure on all of the details. Who, aside from Jags, are the big names?

Out of contract & out of favour we may not have a choice.

Not out of favour as far as we know. He has been suffering a lot of soft tissue issues this year and it has affected his confidence because even when playing in the Ants, he wasnt able to get a good run on to get a few good games behind him. It seemed that every other week he was suffering some form of injury.

He needs a solid pre-season behind him and a good start to the season without injury and he should be fine. With Hendo showing a lot as a CHB, it is highly likely that Bower will drop down to the third tall in the back line and T-Bird can move forward permanently.

Ben Kennedy from SA (small but zippy and great goal sense) and Brad Crouch from Nth Ballarat might be the other chances

Not quite sure you can claim Bower is not out of favour, clearly with Jamison & waite out for most of the second half of the season, Bower has played the majority of the second half of the season with the Bullants, also Saturday against the Saints was the perfect opportunity to give him a game when we were so light on for tall options.
Only had to listen to Ratten post game to to ascertain Bower is clearly not under consideration this season.
Whilst he did miss some games first half of the season he has been available the majority of the second part of the season.

Has anyone heard anymore on Bower ?
Or the others that we haven't signed yet?

I hope we keep Bower but if they are going to move him on I would love to try and get mitch brown from the Eagles. With the eagles flying he is stuck in the wafl but is big body that can play back or forward and is still young.

I think that would be a fair trade. Interesting to see if WCE will trade with us, afterall we supposedly dudded them in the Judd deal! WCE supporters are happy to remind us that we gave up Kennedy, who has been struggling of late, yet still think we didnt trade fairly.

We could've given them our best 22 and they still wouldn't have been happy

Judd has been absolutely sensational, though

McCarthy and Bower will not be going any where, especially for Matt Warnock. Bower is a very good player who has not had a good season the last few season due to injury. We would be easing him through this season so that we can set him up to get him fit during the off season. McCarthy could be a very good player and will not be traded. Just about every one has their price though but we'd have to be getting someone good. It'd be great to pick up a tall forward or a centerman but they won't go cheap and we won't be trading for average joe in those positions although our quest to trade for that missing centerman over the last few years has netted us some average players. Probably learnt our lessons and the new senior coaches probably won't have a bar of trading for ordinary players.

Would it be possible that we rate McCarthy enough to think that he'll take Bower's spot next season?

Also, with Matthew Warnock requesting that he be traded we send a pick Melbourne's way? Perhaps even the 2nd/3rd round pick we'd get for Bower?

It's all possible, but I wouldn't want to rest my plans on McCarthy's shoulders just yet.

M. Warnock for Bower? Picks or no picks that is not an equitable trade.

Yep.

Haven't you heard it's our fault they wasted the picks we gave them on 2 duds in Masten and Notte?

Our main hurdle would be Brown is under contract but its all hypothetical at the moment anyway.

Might not be enough.

I'm getting the "Hartlett" vibe about Emu.

We should make our plans without him in them and anything he offers us, via performance or trade is a bonus.

At his fittest and best form, absolutely in our best 22, but I lack any confidence in his body now.

He had a good end to the season has Pauly. He's a quality player when he's up and firing. Just needs to get stronger in the off season and he'll almost be like a new recruit for us in 2012.
