Just to settle an argument between myself and my housemate, a blues supporter.

I said I'd rather Griffen than Gibbs, he went the other way.

For mine, both are not the toughest players contested footy wise but Griffen's explosiveness and ability to step up in finals (yeah, it is a myth that he is a downhill skier. Was our best player throughout the 2009 finals, and performed well in the 08 finals) has him ahead for mine.

But Gibbs has shown plenty for Carlton, and seems to be a specific role player in the side. I obviously don't watch him as closely as I do Griff but he definitely has talent.

What do you think?

I personally think Gibbs best is better, not to discount griffen its just hard to see how good gibbs really can be considering he is being developed as a rebounding backman atm

Of course it is what I want to hear, but make your own decision yeah?

This is just my opinion so don't launch into me, but as I see it neither player has really hit the consistent and superb heights that they should have by now. Griffen is a big, fast and skilful player but he has too much of a tendency of going missing and not going hard at the ball. He clearly has the attributes to be a very damaging player, but he rarely manages to put it together despite what every Bulldogs supporter says. Yes, he does pull out some good moments, but they're few and far between, especially for a player who was drafted in 2004 and who has a strong inside-midfield in his team.

Gibbs is also very similar to Griffen in that he has all of the attributes of a very good player. He is supremely skilled, particularly with his kicking, and he's quite a big, strong lad. Similarly again, he just doesn't put it together consistently but is also very soft for a guy of his size and skill. This is the main reason why he struggles to assert himself on the game when he plays in the midfield. He isn't fast enough to be a purely outside midfielder but he would be wasted as a solely inside midfielder. He could become one of the premier midfielders in the competition, very much like Luke Hodge, but there is one key component which Gibbs lacks; hardness. He needs to develop that footballing mentality of his, but that will hopefully come with age.

As to who I would prefer, it depends on if I was choosing for Hawthorn or who is the better player. For Hawthorn, I would choose Griffen as we lack a fast midfielder. As for who is the better player, or at least should become so, then it is Gibbs. He is like a Rolls Royce, just at the moment it's painted pink.

Griffen didn't disgrace himself last night, was once again Dogs best player in September. The commentators made note of his low disposal efficiency but most of his kicks were rushed clearances because nobody else in the Dogs midfield was moving.

Lets see how Gibbs goes today, do any Carlton people know whether he is going to be doing a job on an O'Keefe or Jetta or is he going to be given license to run?

most likely be going head to head with Goodes, should be a good battle. Will be a huge factor in whether we win today or not. The way i see it, if Gibbs takes the honors comfortably then we should get up and visa versa.

Gibbs on Goodes? isn't Goodes a fair bit taller?

Gibbs's 2009 was better than any season Griffen has produced. Griffen has been better this season than Gibbs but he's also 3 years older.

Definitely wouldn't trade Gibbs for Griffen.
Ratten would.

Griffen has been better this year but i think in the long run Gibbs will be the superior player. He's a fair bit younger, and i don't think we've seen his best as of yet. He also has been played in a lot of defensive type roles which i don't think are necessarily the best opportunity for him to showcase his talents. Griffen when he's on looks sensational, but i suspect it will be Gibbs that will show the consistency to be a top liner when the time comes.

Ryan Griffen. All heart.
