Yes, its silencing Albo to an extent and gives Scomo a circuit breaker chance to break out of the death spiral he seemed to be in (backed up by polling)

allows him to do what he always has… sidestep / discard the iteration of his persona that has run its course and create another dominant false self.

And Morrison is saying the same thing today that he said yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that....

People will get very bored very soon, especially when the west is committed to doing SFA.
Watch Australians miraculously regain memory retention this time around.

I agree with this.

As well, my recollection is that the big swing back to the Coalition happened before 9/11 and was related to Tampa.

I agree that the Tampa incident gave the government a shot in the arm, but the swing predated even that.

The GST was originally unpopular due to a scare campaign from Kim Beazley, and that nonsensical and illegal government promotion (Joe Cocker's song was used without permission), wouldn't have helped. But my thoughts are that people realised that not only did the GST not really affect them much, but it also replaced a bunch of confusing, hodge-podge sales taxes, making tax time (mid-to-late year for most, coinciding with the election) so much easier. In other words, people came to accept that the GST was a legitimately good, and necessary, policy rather than just a 'grab from the poors', and so Howard's rating improved from early 2001 onwards (6-8 months after the GST was introduced).

Tampa gave the government a shot in the arm, and September 11 sealed the deal. Although Howard felt that Beazley ran a lazy campaign, in reality Howard was campaigning on a position of strength - a legitimate national security threat. Beazley could have reduced the margin of defeat by 'matching it', but he still would have lost comfortably because the LNP have a natural advantage RE such matters, and Howard could play the 'statesman' very well due to his stable, steady mien.

Yeah. I thought the Ukrainians would put up a bigger fight, or Russia's incursion would have been more limited to a gradual build up of conflict in the east.

It looks as if Russian Airborne troops have already captured an airport just outside of Kiev. Give it a day or two and they'll be able to build up enough forces to occupy the Capital and force the current government out. This could be over in an incredibly short amount of time, then Putin stops and sues for peace (unlikely to militarily occupy a nation of 44 million people), and then becomes weeks of uneasy truces and negotiations, and it gradually drops off Australian news's interest. Then back to election game normal.

Morrison presser on now. He’s totally going on the offensive, attacking everyone from Putin to China, blaming China for not standing up to Putin, implying they could stop Putin if they just did as he told them. Putin’s a “thug, I’m standing up to this thug”. “I’ve been warning about this for years!” - “I alone created AUKUS to stop these people” Lots of “I alone predicted this, I alone warned about this”

He’s totally going for a wartime leader vibe.

He’s also scolding journalists for asking what he sees as “unpatriotic” questions.

Where’s Albo? Too afraid to take him on now.

Media TV news is 100% flooded on this issue. I’ve been watching middle Australia’s favourite breakfast TV a show, Sunrise. 7 has dispatched Geof with one f Parry to Lviv to cover it, previously he was hounding McGowan at his pressers in Perth.

Make no mistake, the media is now 100% focused on Ukraine and away from the pandemic and domestic issues. Morrison is making sure they concentrate on this and not domestic issues. They want the narrative changed just like in 2001.

I don't deny that ScoMo wants Ukraine to be his September 11, and that media coverage will help him in this regard.

There are a few issues:
1) The war doesn't look like lasting for long enough to help ScoMo perfect his 'statesman' approach, as you've tacitly admitted above
2) ScoMo doesn't have the gravitas of a 'statesman'
3) People broadly don't trust ScoMo
4) The media will try and pump it up for as long as they can, but how can they keep it up for 12 weeks? By reporting on Russian reconstruction? Complaining about Russian soldiers standing around not doing anything? Bigging up a guerilla conflict? Maybe hearing of some alleged atrocities?
5) People broadly don't trust the media

At most, there'll be a short-lived bump in the polls, and even that will be attenuated by the higher fuel prices, which affect Australians far more than this conflict does. Australians will pay attention for a couple of weeks, and then move on to something else - like say, getting cheaper petrol prices, once it becomes obvious that Russia's won.

Albanese just needs to stay quiet, give his support to action against Russia, this will goad Morrison into saying something more extreme, partisan and stupid, at which point Albanese can come in and say 'stop cheering for a war just to boost your own electoral chances'. People already believe he will say and do anything to win this election, it will play into that.

gets bounce in the polls to say 53/47 and goes for 23 April.

could happen.

I think the pandemic easing + inflation/oil prices easing will allow him to tighten the gap a bit, but the Russia/Ukraine conflict basically means that oil prices stay higher for a bit longer (depending on the war's timeframe).

Doesn't take much to get all the old lies about refugees wheeled out, even the prospect of arrivals is too much for some. Next you'll be telling me that there's an orderly queue and refugees are just taking a number and waiting.
Every part of what i said was a fact (except the googling part, network of friends and crims would have told them oz is soft)

There isn't a queue but there are camps they could have applied at and countries they passed through where they could have applied for if safety was their main motivation.

in reality Howard was campaigning on a position of strength - a legitimate national security threat.

That’s why Morrison, Dutton and other Liberals have gone on the offensive at China as much as they have Putin.

Listening to Morrison presser he had as much hate for China as he did Putin, as if Chinese tanks are rolling down the main streets of Kiev now, and basically saying China is complicit in this due to them not telling Putin to stop (in reality Putin’s motives have nothing to do with China). He also basically said China’s extending an olive branch and offering talks was BS and told them essentially to “f*** off”.

The Liberals are trying to conflate China with this precisely to make the Ukraine War an Australian security issue. They know there’s a lot of hate towards Chinese Australians right now, they’ve made China the main threat to Australians, so keep this war in the news and make sure the narrative is “big bad China is somewhat responsible, they could invade us too, but us Liberals will alone stop them unlike those treasonous China loving Commie wannabes in Labor”.

It’s ridiculous but hey it might work.

for all the to and fro about politics, this heartbreaking video just gives a perspective on the world.
just how incredibly lucky are we to live here in Australia, in a democracy, free from war where mothers don’t have to wait in angst everyday for their husbands and sons to come home.

Free from war in this country. But we export our fair share of it. We’re a bit more careful in making sure mothers losing sons and husbands are generally poor brown people, not white Europeans.

As i mentioned previously, it's rw " absolutism " dick-waving

Like that traitorous dog andrew boltz when he babbled about how Muslim leaders MUST do more to condemn this and that.

Like he was some authority who must be obeyed

newscorp is the cancer eating this planet and it must be eradicated.

So what happens if we end up with Ukrainian refugees arriving in boats?

They are white so that won’t be a problem. We also know that Terrorists only come out of the Middle East so again no issues

The only thing worse than discussing the domestic political implications of a war that is actually fvcking killing people is the fact we know it's a real issue; some Libs would be absolutely salivating at this war as a potential means to retain power.

Liberals love refugees, as long as they're white and more likely to vote for them. White South Africans are very conservative, and I'm sure they'll do polling to ensure Ukrainians have similar "conservative" values before visas are granted.

Morrison playing tough guy is pretty cringeworthy.

No chance anybody with half a brain believes the charade.

George Carlin on Stupid People:
"Think about how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of 'em are stupider than that...."

And those people get the same amount of voting power as an intelligent educated person who does due diligence and researches their vote....

And gain one from a disaffected poor white voter in a marginal electorate who could be fooled into thinking that those in Beijing are responsible for their ills in life, not those in Canberra.
You mean the ones already voting for them ?
