For mine

Out: Douglas (not an AFL player), Doughty (would rather see a younger player get game time), knights (see Douglas), Stevens (is obviously struggling - Bradshaw had a field day)

In: Jacky, Cook, Sellar/McKernan (as a key defender), Maric.

There are certain players that will lose you finals through poor skills or a lack of ability to stand up to the increased pressure. I think Douglas and Knights fit that category so I wouldnt continue to play them. See what trade week throws up for them at the end of the year. Not much I would guess.

sellar will probably get a couple of meesenesque token games to boost his trade potential in about rd 18.

knights should not be dropped. wouldn't bother me if douglas is, but there has to be someone worthy of selection to replace him.

stevos confidence is abaolutely shattered since that freo collision, but we know hes valuable and i would retain him for a few more weeks yet in search of confidence at afl level. maybe a run up forward will do him good for a change.

if he is not offering at the sanfl why do people think that he will magically start to offer at afl level

Sellar should be treated like all other players, his selection should be based on performance and currently he does not have the performances on the board to warrant selection

We should not treat selection and competition games as a trial we should select players the coaches have confidence in that they are ready to perform, James is not ready and needs to show more before he can seriously be considered

I dunno for some strange reason i get the feeling he might actually play well in our side with better players around him id love to see him in the forward line with Tippet, Walker, Porps and eventually burton he would end up with the 5th or 6th best defender.

Just on form thow what tall other then a ruckmen has been in better SANFL form who would you say our next tall option is?

Out: Moran, Doughty (He's probably the king of the backwards handpass to someone under pressure)In: Griffin, Maric

The way his first instinct is to go backwards you think he would be a perfect fit for either rugby code:D

Last night a saw him give 3 handballs away within a minute - all backwards and to a player under the pump and in the end we coughed it up. Personally, I'm fed up hearing peoples stats, I don't give a shit how many possessions you have, its what you do with them and are they attacking and not bloody hot potato gives.

IN - Maric, Jacky

OUT - Moran (Needs a go in the SANFL again), Petrenko

I'm not sure whether i'd want to send Johncock back yet to the SANFL yet, even though yesterdays opinions of mine say otherwise.

I really wouldn't want an unchanged line up though.

I dont share your confidence, I hope he is successful however I believe his lack of competitveness is a real concern

as I have said in previous post we do not need another inexperienced forward to join an already inexperience forward line. Walker and Tippett need to play next to an experienced forward to assist their development

It would be nice but other then Hentchell and Burton (both Inj) we have no experienced forwards so why not play all the young guys together develop some chemistry?

Interesting Thread.

If we are ever going to be competitive we need to continue to blood younger players. 2009 and possibly 2010 are not going to be Premiership years.

McKernan is an interesting one. Anyone who has gone down to training recently would have noticed his ball drop, which was terrible has improved.
However he still is not completing all the major drills. Until this time, i am doubtful whether he will come into the side.

McKernan could be similar to Walker last season and left to develop in the SANFL

I see what your saying, but I think McKernan, whilst not as naturally talented as Walker, is certainly more competitive which is the quality that determines whether a youngster can be selected or needs more time. McKernan is big, strong and agile. He wont be lacking too much apart from experience if he plays KP. Not many KP players would be bigger than him, so he shouldn't be outsized like most youngsters.

All reports are that he isn't just big but has great strength for his age -unlike a Sellar for example who is big but still lacks strength. He also fights to keep the ball in the area and plays with a bit of grunt (something a lot our key position players lack). With Tippett, McKernan and Maric our big guys would finally start to have some presence and grunt about them.

I dunno why people are calling for Reilly to be dropped he hasnt been that bad our coach just dosnt know where to play players he is not a half back flanker! he is a midfielder/ half forward and his goal against Brisbane proves that it was pure class and surely his mature body is wat we need in the midfield

Absolutely agree. He is certainly played out of position and he is actually one of my favourite players. But unfortunately he must perform wherever the coach puts him and currently he is a bit down on form. He is a great user of the ball, no doubt, but he isn't finding enough of the ball. He is a 100 game player and is in that group of players who we need to be playing career best footy. Sadly he is not doing that. VB is played out of position as well, but every player can't play in their desired position they just have to be good enough to adapt to a different role and have an impact.

I'd give him a week with sturt. I expect more from 100 game players.

OUT:

Goody; Has Been
McLeod; Has Been
Edwards: Has Been
Doughty; Too Much Back Passing
Moran; Never Was, Never Will Be

IN:

McKernan; Young Big and Tough.
Maric; Tough. Will fly the flag for the team.
Bock; He is AA after all.
Griffin; (?) We should play two rucks, anyway. All the other teams
do!
Armstrong; I heard he will be our next McLeod. Beside, we need to
blood our young ones. Regardless of how they are going in
the SANFL.

Finally, if we are allowed to drop some players due to bad form, why are we not allowed to drop the coach for bad form?
So, NC should be dropped to the SANFL until he shows enough form to return to the AFL.

All those in favour say 'AYE'

Claude the crows mascot could add some run and carry to our midfield. Also, we should give Bryce Gibbs' dad a few games for Glenelg and then reclaim Bryce under the father son rule.

Why are people calling for Sellar? Wasn't he most likely to be delisted?

One ill informed or naive person asks for it, a few others who don't know any better repeat it because it sounds like a novel and daring idea, and pretty soon it becomes an oft repeated but completely baseless fact/demand.

Examples include
- "Drop all the seniors and blood the kids for the rest of the year"
- "We need a year right down, you can't win a flag without a couple of top 3 draft picks"
- "Stevens is a terrible player"
- "Nathan van Berlo is already locked in as the next AFC Captain"
- "Rutten is big, strong and can take a mark, we should play him at Full Forward"
- "The game has gone past Rutten and he wants out, we should trade him for a first round draft pick"
- "Sellar needs to be played, so that he can prove himself"
- "Top 10 draft picks are guaranteed stars, therefore are always going to be better than an established player we want dropped for them"
- "Gameplan A is the reason we're losing, we should just be <favourite tactic from 1985> and we'd win easily"

Please tell me you wrote this after being on the turps!

Your going to bring in another 3 players who have played less than 10 games on top of the likes of Petrenko, Dangerfield, Walker and Otten. A third of our side will have played less than 10 games - thats asking for a heap of trouble.

Absolute bloody nonsense.

The issue we have at the moment is we seem to have a drop off in concentration which sees us give up 5-6 goals in the blink of an eye.

No turps at all. Rewind to about halfway through the second last night when we were 22 points up. You will see we went to knights on the half forward line twice. Both times put in a half effort leading to a turnover and goals for Brisbane.

Just an opinion but we have some players that continually disappoint at key moments in games. BTW knights goals were junk time specials and half of Douglas' possessions came after the game was lost.

Assuming Bock is not fit -

Ins - Maric, Cook

Outs - Moran, Van Berlo

For mine, Van Berlo has been our poorest mid and Maric has re-earned his stripes in the SANFL.

why not?

he did ok in pre-season down back, and we're short key defenders.

why are people so surprised by a perfectly reasonable suggestion?

Because they dont think its reasonable I suppose.

Its more the fact that its almost a 100% turn around on the thoughts of Sellar on this board

We are in a difficult situation where we want to play youngters but need to do so in a competitive way. It's obvious that there is a void in talent (competence) in the middle range players. We have so many players down on form and confidence.

Guys like Douglas, Reilly, VB, Knights, Maric, Griffin, Rutten (last night being the exception) have all gone backwards so far this year. Stevens has gone from brilliant to Sh*t within 1 month of footy.

How many youngsters (1st and 2nd year players) can we play? Danger, Walker, Patrenko, and Otten have all played regularly and done very well. Cook has had a couple of games. Then there is Moran (approx 10 games) and Tippett and Mackay (almost 30 games). But is it too much to bring in more youngsters? I don't think any side would want to play more than 3 first year players ideally.

However, given our poor form shown by the backbone group, I'd bring in 1 more. IMO McKernan deserves a go. Not because I think we need to go over the top and play youngsters, but I actually think he has the qualities to perform/contribute already. He is incredibly competitive, agile and strong. His qualities are very similar to tippett. We are lacking strength in aerial contests with the exception of Tippett. McKernan will give a strong contest even if he doesn't mark the ball. If the ball comes to ground, like Tippett, McKernan can fight hard to keep it in the area. Given his pace and agility he can even run and carry the ball.

Stevens is required back with the injury to Bock. Walker and Porps need more help and be surrounded by bigger bodies.

Maric to come in and Tippett to play forward.

With Tippett, McKernan, Walker and Porps all up forward, its very likely either McKernan or Walker would be lucky enough to be opposed to the 4th best defender, because most teams play a tall on Porps.

McKernan's last two weeks havent been brilliant but good enough to reward a spot. He can even play a key defensive post if something isnt working allowing Stevens to play forward.

3 talls up forward: Tippett, McKernan, Walker
3 talls in defence: Rutten, Stevens, Otten
2 rucks: Maric and Moran

In: Maric, McKernan
Out: Douglas, Symes (probably unlucky, but I'd give Patrenko one more week in the forward line especially if got 3 talls up there).

We have been too short for weeks now. Mainly because we havent had any KPP in form deserving of a spot.

I see your point to a degree but if you bring in McKernan as a KPP at this time of his development you will destroy the kid and knock his confidence to much, needs time to settle in the SANFL and make a name for himself besides, he isn't playing anywhere near good enough to warrant a game look how long it took Walker to get an AFL game and he dominated in SANFL.

Its more the fact that its almost a 100% turn around on the thoughts of Sellar on this board
Is it really?

I don't see people saying "Sellar = 100% GUN. He's one of my boyz!"

I think it's more a realization that we are playing 1 tall down atm (with Bock out as well as Gill and Hentschel only just returning from injury through the SANFL) and with Stevens out of form and Tippett having to ruck for 50% of the time, this is exposing us at both ends of the ground. Sellar hasn't done a real lot at SANFL level, although he is contributing more than he was last year. He also possesses a bigger body than players like Davis and Young. If he plays forward, then we also wont have to watch Tex struggle with forward line rucking.

Sellars name is being thrown up due to necessity.

Look he's been on par for form with guys like McKernan except he has a bigger body.

With Bock out and Stevens in need of form we lack legitimate KPD options.

He's just the next logical KPD option.
