Making van Berlo back into a tagger...

This would be the role that we no longer use in our gameplan, hence leading to the dropping of Shirley because he can't play as anything else?

Yeah, that's a good idea.

You dont see a role for someone who can play as a close defensive midfielder? Is that what you are saying?

Mate, if you were not taking the piss then somethings seriously wrong in that brain of yours, let me explain.
Mcleod-breaks club record this week, champion of the club, I don't see how we could drop him on the eve of such a big week in the club's history, even if his form hasn't been super. He has earned enough points over his career to be able to be given the chance to shake off his form issues.

Goodwin and Edwards- both in top 5 players for us from last weeks game, don't know why NC would drop 2 of his most experienced players when they have hit some form.

So seriously mate, if you want to chuck an SANFL like side out there, which is what your implying with your changes, then we may as well forfeit our premiership points to Carlton without a ball being bounced. Just think about making accusations like that before you post them mate, ludicrous comments such as that should result in a ban from this thread! I hope everyone else on this thread agrees.

I can see you are not used to sarcasm. As you are a Newbie, I can understand why you don't know my views.

The last paragraph where I suggested Neil Craig should be send back to the SANFL, should have made you realize that I WAS taking the piss.

I was trying to high-light the fact that too many posters here, have been very critical of our senior players but have not had the guts to say that any of them should be dropped. They just mention that they should be retired next year. Apart from being wrong in their criticism, imo, some believe that most of our rookies and draftees should be 'exposed' to the AFL.
I really think that some posters here believe that the likes of Cook, Jacky, Petrenko, Davis, Mckernan etc. can/would perform the same as Rich, Gibbs, Rioli, Kreuzer etc., are doing this year or did in their first season.
And, if they are not doing as well as, it is because Neil Craig isn't giving them the opportunity or because he does not know how to develop them!

So, in conclusion, apart from one or maybe two changes I believe should/could be made, I agree with the changes that the coaching staff have been making.:thumbsu:

Mick Malthouse decided not to play a hard tag on Chris Judd last week. Whoopsy daisies. A timely reminder for us just how damaging he can be!

I'd be very surprised if we allowed him similar free reign this week. Doughty has been doing an ok defensive job. Big ask for him (as it would be for any player) but if he is going to earn his keep and his leadership group status then this is the sort of role we need him to fulfill.

The other match up I would like to see is Douglas doing the defensive-forward job on Gibbs. Carlton go to Gibbs so often when they move out of defence, kicking to him around the CHB area. His distribution upfield is exceptional and he really sets Carlton's attacks up.

If we can win or just break even in these two match ups I can see us prevailing.

We have had opposition mids getting 35--38 touches against us for a few weeks now. We need to get back to having a hard tag on a couple of stars. Judd and Stevens will create havoc if we allow them to run loose. They are both in fine form. Agree that we need to curb Gibbs at halback.
Some people think Sellar will get the nod as a Key Position Defender sometime soon. Craig went on record early in the year saying that this would not happen in '09. Does anyone think Sellar's SANFL form could have changed Craig's mind?
I have seen Sellar live once his year, and he didn't look a likely prospect for AFL that day.

No one tags Judd anymore - they put their top mid on him and use his lack of defensive skills to hurt Carlton on the rebound.

I like this.

why I am thinking about Robert Harvey & Simon Goodwin circa 2005 finals series ;)

I don't think that actually has much to do with Judd, but more to do with the en vogue thinking of the moment. which I am sure is being refined as we speak, and won't last much longer.

by which I mean, the reliance of zones which is the obsolescence of the tagger, and the urge to play on at all costs, fast football which is Mick Nunan ball movement heaven. the latter which is a pre-emptive initiating philosophy which also does find room for the tagger.

I think not tagging Judd is a fad, and by seasons end they'll be sitting on him again.

I cant even imagive how bady gibbs would smash douglas. Anyways, I have a better idea. We should get douglas to tag doughty. With any luck neither will get a touch and our chances of winning the game will increase dramatically. Just imagine it, no blind backturns into trouble followed by a backwards handball back to a team mate under pressure....

wow that would be great...

Do we have two players in the wings that could take over from D&D?
If not, will they let us play with a 2 men bench? Or even better, 16 men on the field?:thumbsu::thumbsu::D
Think about it! Fewer players to screw up and turn the ball over.

I wish this post was a mute point.

Sorry mate! Didn't see the last part on NC, if I had, I probably wouldv'e realised! Atleast you are in aggreeance that the changes people are suggesting will never happen this year unless some major injuries all of a sudden occur. The only change I can see this week is Petrenko going out for maybe Cook or Armstrong, but really can't even see this really happening. NC will stick with the current team so he can see if its the right game plan for the group of players going foward. Watching players such as Sellar, Mckernan, Jacky, Cook at SANFL level hasn't excited me that much, all of them are a fair way off being a regular at AFL level. Sure they are all promising, just not ready yet(in Sellar's case I can't see him ever really making it at the top level). The draw we have had this year also hasn't helped us a lot, playing many of the top and up and coming teams already. I personally think we have probably won about as many as what we could've really expected with the group at the moment. Fans just need to be patient for a couple of years, because when this group peaks, we are in for some exciting times!:)
