Sliding doors - worrying signs and the way ahead

Do we have a specialist goalkicking coach? If not then we need to get one. If so then we need to sack him and get a different one.

And yet we kick goals fine when there's no pressure on.

It's all between the ears.

Worrying signs

Thinking our rebuild has finished
Tex looking for the body again rather than attacking the ball
Filthy playing soft and bruise free football
Resorting to Sloane in middle
Probably losing our first touch mid at end of year because of stubbornness of coaches eg crouch
Defence allowing ball out back time and time again
The same players missing crucial goals game after game
Not trusting Pedlar Harry and Soligo in middle
Fog not providing the focal point we need

Way ahead
Start next week by dropping a few and make a statement that their effort is not good enough eg filthy
Play some of the youngsters in the middle for longer periods of time
Give gollant a go he deserves his chance for the inanimate object Thilthorpe
Bring back Nankervis who did not deserve to get dropped
Sloane never should play large minutes incentre square again
Make midfield and key backs priority for our draft and trade plans
Select players who can kick and hit a target
I can pretty much guarantee that by preseason next year, we will have forgotten Slowne's performances and think he's the gun mid we build around. We seem to have our memory wiped every summer.

It's a nothing game.

Play all the AFL listed guys who played SANFL this week.

A trip to Perth and reward for a good SANFL season.

I don't know if it's a "nothing" game. On the one hand, yeah we can't make finals and we're probably better off tanking it rather than winning and achieving nothing but pushing our draft pick down a few spots.

But on the other hand, if the club is talking to the AFL behind closed doors trying to negotiate some kind of compensation for the fiasco that occurred on Saturday night, that would be entirely dependent upon us winning this week. We need to be able to say that losing to the Swans cost us a finals spot, which requires us to beat West Coast and also some other results going our way. If that doesn't happen then the AFL will shut the door in our face because ultimately we didn't lose anything - if anything that umpire did us a favour by giving us a better pick than we'd otherwise have.

Selection is the most worrying sign. The lack of integrity and the gold passes continually handed out to the usual suspects significantly hinder our chance of victory and the opportunity to develop our kids.

People keep talking about how close we were and how many games we lost by under a goal but if this rotten part of the club is fixed that could’ve been a completely different story this year. I find it so hard to believe the coaches thought that starting midfield on Saturday was conducive to success, and I don’t know how much more evidence to the contrary they need to wake up to it. Running our kids through there TURNS GAMES.

Are they really that inept or do they feel indebted to certain senior players and have external pressure to play them? It continues to boggle my mind.

Our forward line os the least of our worries, even if his out put drops, I think we can cover
Cover a 70 goal season? Walker kicks half that and we'd need another player of Rankine's calibre to cover it.

We need a psychologist, not a skills coach.

Would love to see Dowling play. He's got it.
I agree with Mutineer in that he needs to clean up his foot disposals but I'm seeing real signs of quality. Smart football and good hands. I quite liked Bonds game on the weekend to. Let's hope both see alot of SANFL midfield time in the first half of 2024.

Thilthorpe has just turned 21 last month and this was his first full year of football. Big men take longer, give him some time.
Matt Crouch had to improve and did, that's why he was selected.
Pedlar has completed 1 Pre-season but should double his midfield time next year
Fog was much better when there wasn't fumbling and bumbling at half back

Zac Taylor, Pedlar, Soligo, Dawson and Schoenberg should all play together next year.

Ruckmen and backmen will be our targets at the draft

I'm like you ....infuriated that all year, our KPD have continually missed the ball in spoils, and allowed the ball over the back .....it's been a theme of the season

Just on this week ....what are the SANFL Finals rules ? .....IIRC if a player plays the final AFL game of the season, he can't play in the SANFL Finals ?
I know it used to be the case ....not sure now, but I would think the Club would see more benefit in having Gollant / Nankervis / ? playing Finals over the WCE

Field kicking is going to need a lot of work before he's going to be a threat at AFL level IMO, short passing is a work in progress and a fair way off it currently.
I see comments like this about players and I wonder why and what we saw to draft him?

If you cant kick then why get drafted?

This!
2023 has turned sour on the back of mystifyingly poor goalkicking.
Here's a "sliding door": if the boys had kicked only one more goal (and not a point) in 3 of the 5 games we lost by 4 points or less, we'd be in 6th place, pushing for 4th, with a Home Elimination Final on our plate.
If it was only one more goal in 2 of those 5 games, we'd be in 8th place, looking to finish 6th with a big win over WCE this week.
(btw, either scenario renders the Sydney fiasco/loss irrelevant)

I'd hope that Nicks is using Tex and Fogarty in particular, getting them to explain their routine when kicking for goal. Their accuracy is not accidental, but a product of hard work, concentration, and determined execution.

Please watch this (it's only 6 minutes) and draw your own conclusions:

Sorry mate .....in all the years of watching footy, I've never known who the umpires are from match to match .....but I know every damn mistake my teams players have made ;)

sorry, what??
I don't know who the Umpires were in the 2017 GF were, either. What's the relevance, please?

Plz watch that youtube vid. The replays and comments are very clear.

Just that the umpire to player mistakes is about 50:1

In the emotion of the game, I get that both sides supporters think the polar opposite of each free kick .....but in a replay, once the emotion has dissipated, there's not that many mistakes

EXCEPT BY GOAL UMPIRES !!! ......50% of their calls, pre Arc, have obviously been wrong .....point the arrow there

Umpire-to-player, 50:1?? Do you mean other way around? :confusedv1:

"Even when the questions are candid, my arrows miss ..."
But not those in that gif of yours :eekv1:.

Again, not sure if you're serious --- pre-ARC, 50% of Goal Umpire calls were wrong?

I'm only going off how often the arc overrules the Goal Umpire .....seems an awful lot
