Last night we got lit up by port's small forwards. We've had problems in this area since the great Roger Hayden departed.

Obviously drafting a small defender is probably a priority now!

Who would be best suited from either crozier or mayne at learning this role?

I reckon Croze could possibly do it,quick, agile, penertrating kick.

I think Crozier is to good for the role, Mayne probably a fraction too big and not agile enough. I liked the idea of Duffy playing the role although if Walters pushes further up the field he may play in the pocket.

In my opinion, it is either Duffy or Draft.

If we could get him, Kyle Hardingham would be a great fit down back. Has the pace to go with the smalls but great in the air to play on the Wingard types. Just don't have the faith in Spurr or Duffield anymore, and Ibbo is better suited to playing on the the third tall. Letting go of Broughton seems a little strange looking back

I was thinking this today. Free agent and could play that role. One of those 'worth a punt' players. If it fails no harm.

Give Clancee a pre-season of practice in a lock down role and see how he does? Probably lacks a bit for pace but is a good user coming out as well which is a bonus

Actually forgot about Clancee, definitely suited to the half back with his decent disposal. Just needs a proper pre season

Bit left field, but brady grey from what I have seen at peel is super quick, hard strong body and has a bit of aggression.
Could he be the one?
Does he have the leap to go with the wingard types?

I agree that we crucially need a small defender with genuine pace.

Are there any particular players we can get in the draft?

Crozier is way to potent in the forward line in my opinion, he oozes class.

Yes, Brady Grey was very close to selection and could be a player to play that role. Don't think we are badly off for replacements but a possibility for one of the draft positions. I still hope we build the numbers of key positions especially with Gumbleton and Keplar gone.

Oh just had a strange thought, could Sylvia play that role certainly got the body for it.

Yeah, i personally can only think of brady grey as someone who could genuinely grow his career as a small defender as he is young and has all the physical attributes that you want in a tough small defender.

Agreed. Would love to see another tall in this draft, I have been eyeing out Hugh Goddard.. Could be that Harry Taylor type defender that I have always wanted freo to have

Sylvia? Pearce? Neither have the pace imo. Great disposal though.

Realistically we are going to have a few players who are searching for a way into the team. A bit similar to Sutcliffe who is more a midfielder than a defender, but who has found a niche for himself while our current group of mids are intact.

Crozier; disposal, speed, marking and tackling are all strengths. Is he too good for the backline? Reality is that there is not actually a vacancy in the forward line at the moment, and if he could make a home for himself in the backline he could be a real weapon. Have loved watching Varcoe when he is "on", and I think Crozier could be similar.

Sheridan; to me has not shown the marking and tackling skills that Crozier has, and which I think are important for a defender. But he doesn't have the game to displace any of our current mids, so maybe he could be set the challenge.

Grey; haven't seen him play, but sounds like he has the skill-set for the role, and it also sounds like he has the discipline to play defender.

Duffy; pace and skill, and a bit of x-factor. Does he have the consistency and discipline for a defensive role?

Seriously Brady Grey is the man! Was close to selection this year in his first year.

Daniel Pearce is fast, has an alright jump and putting him on an opponent with a specific task might work. Might.

Personally I like Clancee Pearce, loves the physical stuff. He would already be an upgrade on Duffield. Has courage and is more adept one on one. People have forgotten how good he was in 2012. 2 seasons ruined by injury is a concern though. If he has a big preseason I'd love to see him slot into the backline and Sutcliffe into the midfield.

C. Pearce not quick enough. We need a lock down defender to play on super quick smalls. For whats its worth I saw all of Morabitto's first three games where he played as a defender early this year and I thought he looked excellent running off half back. I know he has never played a lock down role before, but perhaps getting him to focus on shutting down a man might simplify the game for him and allow him to build into 2015. All I know is I never, ever want to see Spurr isolated on a super quick forward ever again.

Morabito will get killed by a small forward due to agility.

To answer your question on Duffy, No.

Grey's a chance but still young
Sheridan could play half back no problem
Crozier, why would you?
