Bell has a law degree and Worsfold earned a pharmacy degree when he was playing.

Yeah, Belly was doing Law at Melbourne the same time that I was there.

We had a Melbourne vs. Monash Uni footy match and he turned up and played for us! 3 days before an AFL final!

I told him that as a Roos fan I couldn't let him do it! I asked him whether Pagan knew that he was playing and he said that he didn't. In the end he played and absolutely dominated as you would expect against a bunch of pointdexter nerd losers (Monash)

I managed to dish a handball to him from which he kicked a goal. So there's my claim to fame, a goal assist to one of my favourite players in a game of footy.

Daniel Motlop - was going to study Law or Medicine if his footy didn't work out, probably will later in life anyway. Not sure where he gets it from though, apparentlyu Shannon's not the sharpest tool in the shed ;)

I reckon LLoydy is the smartest player in the AFL. He can "convince" the umps into giving him a free kick for anything eg. Melbourne v Essendon. Other forwards like Richardson, Tarrant and Nietz can be shot, stabbed or run over by busses and not get a free kick! LLoyd must me a master of mind control and therefore the smartest player in football

Wayne Carey. Not so smart off field but on field he was a genius. Could read the play better than anyone else and could turn a game in minutes.

For all his smugness and arrogance, I'm sure that there isn't one supporter who wouldn't have loved wayne carey in their team at his peak.

Dutchy Holland is studying Law.

Ex Players: Richard Loveridge is a QC, and a fair chance to become a judge soon. I saw he presided over the Scarlett case this week.

Indeed, it depends on how much work you put into your studies and the units you chose to study on the basis of scaling.

Ex-players

As far as ex-players are concerned...

Mike Fitzpatrick was, of course, a rhodes scholar.
Justin Madden was an Architect. Although his entry into politics speaks to a lack of common sense.

Also, Alastair Nicholson studies something at Melbourne Uni. Seen him photocopying.

Luke Ball's brother Matt is also at Melbourne, studying law I believe. David Teague is doing something at RMIT, not sure though.

Met both these guys up in Newcastle at Uni games, Matthew Ball actually shocked me for the fact that he was a Melbourne Uni footballer but still had a beer in his hand. Wonders never cease, eh.

Jason Ball is a stockbroker.

Doesn't necessarily make him smart!! Schwass and Hird also work part-time for a stockbroker (Were's).

Mike Fitzpatrick and Richard Loveridge were two of the smartest footballers who were also good at the game. Paul Roos and Chris Langford were also both reasonably cluey and good footballers.

As an aside, I believe nearly all of the younger Swans players are currently doing some sort of tertiary studies.

Good to see some players getting props for being something other than meatheads.

Simon Garlick's not long got his MBA, Leoncelli was a super-smart cookie also. McKay and the Crows' Clarke are vets and Bell's got his LLB.

Any footballer thriving in their studies ends up doing really well for themselves down the track a la Loveridge and Fitzpatrick. Footy's almost as good as the old school tie in getting a top notch job these days, so the one who don't wise up are just stupid, or end up as panellists on the Footy Show. Dippy and blokey, but not too much up top - the masses will love ya!!

I remember for the last few years at Hawthorn, when Langers was living in Sydney, and flying down for games, that the papers noted he was earning more in his professional job as as property developer than he was as a footballer. Considering he was a sh1t hot full back, it must have been quiet a tidy sum.

He is now of course an AFL commissioner.

What a silly question.

Nigel Smart of course.

In all seriousness though - who the hell knows.

Being at Uni certainly doesn't give you a monopoly on being smart.

Maybe they could have a AFL edition of who wants to be a millionaire. Then again Bucks would no doubt win the million with Eddie as his phone a friend.

Doesn't matter how committed you are. To get a score like that means u need to be ****ign smart.

Mal Michael is smartest for his move from Collingwood to Brisbane.
Next smartest is Jim Krakouer because everyone says there's no life after football but he managed to get it.
