So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

Dangerfield. When he plays well the Crows play well.
Pendlebury. Ditto
Crows and Pies would be nothing without those 2. Their best games make the whole team lift. They bring other players into the game.
Compared to the hype Saint Nick has gotten his whole career, never took his team to a flag, plays well and his team still lost, plays shit and his team still won.
Dangerfield.. Pendlebury... underrated? I see your argument but man, you're way off if you think either of them are underrated.

I think two types of players who are often underrated are the "unspectacular" types who do a lot of stuff that goes unnoticed by spectators but probably not by coaches -Jack Redden is a good example.

The other type is the "unfashionable" player who doesn't get the accolades that big name players do in the same role but do as well, if not better - Jay Schultz is a good example. Only in the last year has he begun to get recognition as Port have risen up the ladder. He doesn't get the attention that players like Cloke, Franklin, Reiwoldt etc get but in my opinion, he is their equal. A large part of being underrated has to do with the club you play for, the big Victorian clubs' players often get rated higher than they would if they played for smaller or interstate clubs. And vice versa.

Rubbish, this is the first year he has made that sort of impact. He was good in 2012 but not Cloke/Franklin/Riewoldt at their peak good. This is only the second season he has averaged over 2.5 goals per game. As opposed to Franklin who has him covered for goals and disposals and tackles in every season the two have played in.

If you think that Schulz as a player even approaches these three then it is clear that you are vastly overrating him based off 5 games this year.

By my fellow eagles supporters: priddis.

Even when he was easily BOG at halftime (for the eagles at least) there were eagles supporters calling him a spud

Cale Hooker is AA CHB right now
No, he isn't.

Right now, the All Australian CHB is Harry Taylor

All-Australian selection is an award for a whole season of footy. Not for one-quarter of the season.

It's supposed to be an honour to be named as an All-Australian. People throw the phrase around like confetti over anyone who is the flavour of the month.

Has kept Petrie, Cloke, Sandilands and Waite goalless, to name a few. Restricted Roughead to 1 goal and no impact. Is first in the AFL for marks and is averaging 24 disposals a game. At this point in the season he is easily AA.

Except Petrie,Cloke and Waite are (or were) badly out of form.

Petrie - Only game this season without a single shot on goal. Held to just 3 touches
Waite - Only goalless game for the season. Destroyed so badly that he was dropped.
Cloke - Kicked 4.4 the previous week.

You can only beat who you're up against and Hooker has smashed every single opponent he's had this year.

No. At this point he is the best-performed CHB in the league. The All Australian team is selected for the whole season.

You wouldn't say "At this point, Port Adelaide are premiers". You wouldn't say "Joel Selwood is the current Brownlow Medallist". You don't hear me saying that Will Langford is All Australian because he's quietened Cotchin, Selwood and Mundy (and curbed Ablett's effectiveness, despite him getting 30+ touches)

Completely disagree about the Crows. Its the players like Sloane that will lead them to wins this year.

So we're arguing over semantics. Good to know.
Yeah, it's semantics, but it's important semantics, I think
We should just wait until the actual team is selected before we bestow the tag on any players.

In recent years, I've heard players get prematurely pumped up as "All Australian" by various commentators. (Hello Dwayne Russell)
The problem is, it's seeps into people's consciousness as a fact. It turns out the player misses selection. I'll be reading a newspaper article 12 months later and some lazy journo will describe the player as "the former All Australian" even though he was never selected.

Ryan Crowley last year - he received more publicity for being the potential All Australian tagger than half the blokes who made the flippin' team.

People should give it a rest.

There is nothing wrong with saying "Cale Hooker is the form CHB of the AFL"

I was one who thought we bought a spud in when we got Hale. I am thrilled with how he has gone for us. So consistent and just has a real crack every contest.

He doesn't have the look or the natural ability as some but he is a very good footballer. The best thing about him is he usually always stands up for us in big games or finals.

Good to see so many North supporters happy for him too!

if the world was a meritocracy, maybe.

you're forgetting that taylor plays for geelong whose defenders pretty much own the aa back 6.

I've always been a Hale fan. His ruck work is underrated - he was a good forward for North when we put him up there, but he's better now at hawks. Underrated at both clubs though.

I agree with Hale being severely underrated. And his position is too.

There's a huge advantage in having a backup ruckman who can hold his own as a ruckman but also play as a genuine forward. Hale is clearly the best at that in the league at the moment.
