So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

Cyril = most underrated.

I'm of the opinion that Cyril has become so overrated he's underrated. People get so worked up about how 'overrated' he is that they miss just how much of an impact he has on games. He's just as important to Hawthorn as Mitchell or Hodge.

Did I just read what I thought I read?

Rioli - so amazing that he's even the best at being underrated.

jack darling. has produced as a big forward since day one. cameron gets alot of raps and rightly so but jack darling is arguably the best young forward in the game and has been consistent. his pressure skills are top 5 in the league. rarely hear him discussed on the vic centric media shows.in all australian form

I usually find that the leading tacklers own this thread. The likes of Jack Redden, Scott Selwood, etc. tend to be consistently underrated.

Jack Redden is putting together a solid career but is seldom mentioned outside of the 3 Rs collective.

I think the work of Kennedy and especially Darling outside of kicking goals is also underappreciated. Both work very hard.

Brad Hill would be up there. Averaging the 3rd most possessions for Hawthorn thus far this year (25.2, behind Mitchell and Birchall), and has had the most inside 50s and equal 1st in goal assists at the Hawks.

I think two types of players who are often underrated are the "unspectacular" types who do a lot of stuff that goes unnoticed by spectators but probably not by coaches -Jack Redden is a good example.

The other type is the "unfashionable" player who doesn't get the accolades that big name players do in the same role but do as well, if not better - Jay Schultz is a good example. Only in the last year has he begun to get recognition as Port have risen up the ladder. He doesn't get the attention that players like Cloke, Franklin, Reiwoldt etc get but in my opinion, he is their equal. A large part of being underrated has to do with the club you play for, the big Victorian clubs' players often get rated higher than they would if they played for smaller or interstate clubs. And vice versa.

Most of the top players, the best of the best excepted, are rated differently by people and if the variation is enough then it can appear valid to argue that they're under-rated. So, to take Cotchin as a good example, to some he's up there with Pendelbury just below Gazza, to some on BF he is just a chip scab who can't kick. Most would disagree with both ratings however. What distorts things is the tendency (which has grown recently) for people on this forum to cut down any tall poppy at the slightest opportunity. It can then appear that just about any good player is under-rated.

Another classic category is the player who takes a while to come good, most common with talls. There's sometimes a lag in perception which has people labelling them spuds or underplaying their achievements when they've come good. I think Hawkins was probably the poster-boy for that; though I think he's rated now.

For me the classic is the player who was labelled a spud and was a whipping boy for his own supporters, was perhaps flawed or limited in talent in some way but who overcame that but is never given the recognition he deserves. For me Daniel Jackson is the prime example of this because I always liked him and had to endure him being abused by others. Stanton may be in the same category.

Sam Gibson from North doesn't get much credit compared to his teammates who go missing more often.
Gibson is consistent.

That's not necessarily a good thing though.

Racks up touches every single game but it's what he does with them that is often frustrating. King of selling team mates into trouble or turning it over.

Was pretty solid last night but still had a few facepalmworthy moments.

But he can run for days I guess.

Dangerfield. When he plays well the Crows play well.
Pendlebury. Ditto
Crows and Pies would be nothing without those 2. Their best games make the whole team lift. They bring other players into the game.
Compared to the hype Saint Nick has gotten his whole career, never took his team to a flag, plays well and his team still lost, plays shit and his team still won.
