This week’s 'Stat Attack' looks at inside 50s, kick ins and the debut of Steele Sidebottom.

Inside 50s
Collingwood registered 35 inside 50s on Monday night, one less than St Kilda. It’s interesting to note that Collingwood entered its attacking 50 from the centre corridor 17 times, five more than St Kilda. The Magpies went in 19 times from the right (St Kilda 14) and ten times from the left (St Kilda 21).

The Saints were dominant once inside their forward 50 scoring 59% of the time which ranked third highest for the round. The Magpies failed to convert on Monday night scoring 33% of the time, the lowest in the competition for the round.

Stoppages
Collingwood allowed St Kilda to score 38% (scored 8.3) of the time from clearances, the highest against any opponent this season.

Kick ins
The Magpies had eight kick ins for the night, seven resulting to direct teammates. From their eight kick ins, two resulted in an unbroken play into the forward 50.

Steele Sidebottom
The 18-year-old, who was a late inclusion for the injured Leon Davis, showed he has what it takes to play at the elite level finishing the night with 22 possessions, four marks and three tackles. Statistics made more impressive considering he only played 60% of the game and was rotated on eight occasions.

Sidebottom used the ball by hand with 100% effectiveness and kicked it with 67% effectiveness.

He possessed the ball 73% of the time in the midfield, 18% up forward and 9% in defence. From his 22 possessions, six were contested and three resulted in an inside 50.

awesome stuff. Steele was definitely great by hand. Some of his handballs under pressure were very good.

The one stat i reckon that is deceptive is clearances. We smashed the saints in the first 20 minutes 10-2, and i think we made up a bit of gruond in the last when the saints shut down and went easy.

Otherwise, i think it was a dominant display by the saints in the clearances. I reckon we got smashed.

Thanks 007. Can I ask where the stats are drawn from?

With the inside 50 entries, can we tell how many of the 17 entries from the corridor were effective in terms of marks taken by our forwards, goals etc.

Collingwood obtain their stats from Champion data. If you want all the stats for all the categories you would have to contact champion data because they only wholesale directly to media and professional sports clients. Champion data do not sell or make available statistics to the general public unless in special circumstances, such as approved research projects it.

For Sidebottom to get 22 touches in his first game againts the best team in the comp for pressure is a massive plus just imagine when he gets used to the speed and has has a little bit more time to use the footy

Steele Sidebottom is already an AFL standard player, this is clear now.

As I've said in other posts, with Steele, it's going to be a matter of how good he becomes rather then if he is going to be good enough.

Watching him on Monday, his close in clearances were something to behold for an 18 year old with no muscle definition.

This kid could be anything, I can just imagine how good he is going to be next year after a full pre season of weights and strength training.

We have found 2 hard inside, goal kicking midfielders in one draft. (Steele and Beams):thumbsu:

Rusty is a good kick off both sides, but he's a fantastically efficient handballer in close.

Steele, Barham & Beams are all excellent players, we are lucky to have them all. Should all be superstars in the future.

I agree, he could become anything, but they might just stifle his development after being in the system a few years with the disciplined game plan on offer at the moment. He wouldn't be the first player this is happening to.

..and to think someone in another thread was trying to argue that Stanley outperformed Rusty. Bah! To quote Dale kerrigan.."tell him his dreamin'!" Rusty is the real deal.

I'm with you TRS but a moderate thought Sidey's debut was woeful. I'm still looking for that elusive second person who agrees with that assessment.
If you're talking about mdc, I still largely agree with him that Rusty didn't do much with the pill on Monday night. Still, I'm talking about his traits in general, and I certainly don't expect him to take the game by storm on debut. I think Rusty will be a tremendous player for us, and even though he wasn't damaging on first showing, the fact that he naturally accumulates ball will stand him in good stead in a team that lacks ball magnets. Pendles and Swanny are the closest we have at this point.

The only problem Rusty had on Monday was that he was moved off the ball too easily. Everything else he showed was top notch. He had great foot disposal off both feet, a great handball in close, he was level headed under pressure, ran to the right spot especially at stoppages and generally picked the right option. The fact he was moved off the ball too easily is because he is still a string bean. When Steele and Beams get some core strength to allow them to stand up in the contest we will have two very very good midfielders.

The kid is going to be a very good player, little doubt about that. Finds the footy and uses it well.

Would be good if Favourites or one of the other video guys could do a video of Rusty's possessions for the night. Would be an interesting view.

This.

I've never really rated high possession games where the disposals don't really accomplish much. Thus my criticism of SS's debut. Never have I said he won't be a player.

I'd argue that his kicking was pretty poor on Monday - but it's technically fine, and the VFL watchers have described it as "neat", so I'm happy to write it off as a down game.

And agree about getting pushed off the ball a lot, but as you say, that will come with time hopefully.

So you're the second person who thought Sidebottom was 'woeful' Monday night because thats what was said. I stand corrected, I simply couldn't fathom another objective lucid human being coming up with the same assessment.

My own definition of 'woeful' is the vast majority of Alan Toovey's football after he fluked 3 goals in his first match, with him and Leigh Brown neck and neck in 2009.

Would be good if Favourites or one of the other video guys could do a video of Rusty's possessions for the night. Would be an interesting view.
With the fear of backing up over an old carcass, could you do the same with O'Bree's possessions? And please also add Benny Hill music for effect?

Chip, don't waste my time with this shit. If you want to tell me what I think, you should probably find a quote where I said he was "woeful" to back it up. As no such quote exists, you should probably delete your post because your posting is normally very good and this one lets you down.

I haven't been lucky enough to see many Collingwood games (only the ANZAC Day clash....poor me!!) so I haven't seen Beams and Rusty really. But by the sounds of it we look to have 2 great mids that will develop and accumulate games at the same time (|kinda reminds me of Francis and Russell). Add Barham to the list (as a tagger) and our midfield looks quite promising over the next 2-4 years.

So the majority of midfield time in a year or two could be Beams Rusty Pendles and Swan rotating the majority of the time and Barham being our number one tagger. That seems like a midfield that has great disposal (although maybe not penetrating by some of the past threads) by hand and foot and a great close checking tagger.

Add cameos from Didak, Davis, Thomas and any future draft picks and I am quite excited. Now if I can just get Sentanta to respond to my numerous emails asking them to explain why I no longer see 3 games a week anymore and get them to change it back I might see some Collingwood games.

Setanta are showing the Collingwood Vs Carlton game this Sunday morning at 5am here in London , finally a Pies game, although with the injuries this week i'm not looking forward to it as much as i should be
